I think it was the strain Ian had with Cindy (such as when she didn't tell him the truth that he wasn't Steven's father) which transformed him into a selfish person.
Yeah, that and Pete's insisting he take up boxing. Ian lacks the hard-core villainy Nick Cotton had, because he hid his sensitivity under a hard shell.

Yep, he was. With all the body blows he took over 34 years (kudos to Adam Woodyatt, who has played Ian from day one), he has mellowed somewhat.
