    I live in Montana, I find the right tree, cut it down and mill out the slabs myself. Then I dry them in my kiln. Once dry (to about 7% moisture content) I build either tables or entryway benches with them. I alone from felled tree to finished product am the only one to handle the pieces. Maybe I should start a UA-cam channel...

    I used General Finishes Seal-A-Cell and Arm-R-seal semi gloss on my live edge walnut table. Applied 6 coats, sanding with 600 grit between coats and it turned out pretty well.

  • @ask_jeebs
    @ask_jeebs 6 років тому +12

    I use a smoothing plane on the face instead of sanding. Sanding actually minimizes the grain character. Then I use about 4 coats of Danish oil and then buff it with beeswax.

    • @John_Malecki
      @John_Malecki  6 років тому +9

      Thats a great classic technique JB. Rubio actually needs the grain to open up in order to penetrate. Hence the 120 grit final finish. Feels great to the touch. You're using an amazing classic style, which i LOVE for figured woods. Great post! Thank you

    • @ask_jeebs
      @ask_jeebs 6 років тому +3

      John Malecki ahhh that definitely makes sense. The wax probably needs open pores for it to seep in. Kinda makes me wonder how it would do on a dense tropical hardwood like wenge.

    That's a gorgeous piece of wood. Thanks for the pointers. My slab's a bit too red, but otherwise very similar to yours, so let's see how it goes with a little dark tint in the finish.

  • @capti443
    @capti443 3 роки тому +2

    Nice work! ... For me, instead of the look of black epoxy to fill knotholes and other voids, I found that unused ground coffee mixed with epoxy gives a more organic look to the filled areas and they both trim easily to flush with the surface, sand easily, and accept finishes well. Of couse, it depends on the look you’re going for and the slab itself. Coffee beans can be found in a variety of shades from light brown to very dark, and because we like coffees, it is pretty much FOC to Bogart a handful. In contrast to your method, however, it requires you fill for the top of the slab, overfill a bit, then trim it down. ... Love your work!

    John we are in process of making a live edge signature board for our sons wedding, this will eventually be turned into a table. The conundrum is what product to use that you can sign and then a protective coating on top of that.

    • @John_Malecki
      @John_Malecki  5 років тому

      That is a conundrum. i would try out tests on some poly on the same wood, should work fine then seal it with poly. Use paint markers too

    • @TravisOG64
      @TravisOG64 5 років тому

      When signing bare wood, DO NOT use a sharpie marker. Many finishes will bleed it out. I know from experience. Go to an art supply store and find a black marker that uses archival ink. And as always, test it out on scrap wood first.

    I watched your video and liked it alot. I'm going to try out that coating process you are using. So far I've been using a low voc flooring urethane and applying it with a lambs wool pad to get even coverage. Usually up to three coats while buffing between coats with steel wool pads. I learned this process in trade school and it really makes the grain pop out. But is time consuming as well.

    Just watched this video. I have a massive live edge slab that I will turn into a coffee table for myself. Just about fell off my chair at the price of the monocoat product. I have used spar varnish cut with turpentine for a finish on other projects, doing a wet sand, which gives a beautiful satin finish and fills blemishes at the same time. Takes longer to dry but since I don't have a client paying for the materials, ultimately works out better for me. Found this in Fine Woodworking magazine years ago.

I have done a bar and shelves out of cedar with clear epoxy, filled from the front side once I had the top sanded down to smooth using 100, 150, 200, 300 on the cedar and up to 2000 on the epoxy I coated the whole thing with polyurethane applied with sponge brush did 4 layers. Turned out smooth as glass and looked amazing but WOW what a headache with the epoxy sanding, I will try the back fill technique on my two benches and breakfast table that I am currently building for my new house.

    Thanks for the excellent video on finishing live edge planks. The links to the finishes are very helpful. An item you mentioned in a couple of comments was the use of a Festool 150 or 90 sander. I'm a user of a number of tool manufacturers too include Dewalt, Delta, Fein, PorterCable, & Milwaukee. Festool hasn't made my "cut list" regarding increased cost over capability. Could you provide your experience with Festool Sanders in comparison to other manufacturers in a future video?
    Not to leave this in a negative scenario, thanks for the great instruction on how to get results with large planks. Looking for the why Festool over other sanders.

    Nice tip to fill from the bottom if holes go all the way through the slab. What about filling large gaps without tint? I read that Westsystems clouds up and traps bubbles if you fill too thick at one time. Is there a noticeable line when you put one coat of epoxy on top of another? Sorry last question, do you use one or two coats of the Rubio monocoat?

    Hi John. Great video. Would you advise treating a pine slab with wood conditioner before adding this product, as you would with a regular stain?

    John, first time slab worker. Using Spalted maple, I want to use a finish that keeps a more natural color while highlighting the spalted area's, do you have any recommendations? Also, how would you combat the wood absorbing the finish unevenly because of the density difference in spalted vs. Non-spalted area's?

    My slab is 6' by 3' and 2 and a half inchs thick, my question is, is that to thick?

Nothing else is the Rubio final process is it durable for say a behind couch bar top table? Any help would be great appreciate.. keep up videos. Thank you.

    You can use a horse 🐴 hair brush to reduce the amount of finish material that drop in the floor after you work in live edge go and wash the brush immediately before it get dry.
    And after the finish set you can use a towel to remove any extra of finish materials !!!

    Hi John, I have several 3" slabs from my dark walnut. I want to finish it and make many outdoor benches. How do I finish for outdoor use? I live in Chicago so I get negative temperatures in the winter. Thank you for your help.

    Should you up your grit to 220 before putting on Rubiomoncoat finish? Or will that close up the wood too much? Thanks!!

    First, truly beautiful work; thank you for sharing. I picked up a stunning, super gnarly slab of western maple recently that a friend and I are about to turn into a dining table. Two very quick questions: out of Oldies and Rubio's - is either one better at protecting the wood from food/wine stains? Thanks again...

      Well i would probably go with the rubio just because it will be easier to fix. nothing is stopping wine from ruining it haha thats just the truth

      @@John_Malecki I've been reading and hear that to use Rubio's i can only sand to a circa 120 grit. I plan to sand much finer than that. What do you sand to here?

    I am new to wood working and I love all the videos, thanks. I'm still confused as to when do I fill the voids with epoxy? Do I sand my project first then add it and re sand or do I add epoxy before any sanding?

    I have a live edge slab of maple. Left some traces of sapwood on there and would like that edge to appear more raw or textured. Looking at using General Finishes pre-conditioner with either a light brown dye, medium brown dye, or tobacco stain for the edge while using Rubiomonocoat fume light on the top (this will be a shelf/console table). Wondering what your thoughts are for the live edge. Use pre-conditioner? Dye vs stain? Unfortunately, while I have scraps of maple to test the top of the wood, I have never worked with a live edge and no spare pieces to test with.

    John, Is it possible to treat live edge wood for service shelves for an outdoor coffee shop/drive thru espresso stand? If so, what kind of epoxy should we do in order to completely weather proof the wood? Think sun and snow.

    Are there any types of live edges you recommend if Guanacaste isn't available? Any types that should be avoided for this finish on a kitchen table?

    Hey John. Great Video.Inspired me to try the Rubio on a few projects i'm working on. Curious what color Rubio Monocoat you used for that slab.Or did you use the "clear" I have a 6'-4" slab of walnut I was thinking of using to make a computer desk. I have some Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C (Charcoal color ) on its way for another project but wonder if that might not be too dark for the walnut. My 1st time working with walnut. Also have some Rubio Monocoat Hybrid Exterior Wood Protector, wine red color on its way. Any color suggestions would be appreciated.

    Read all of comments not to duplicate.. most comments said you sand to 120 before Rubio, but in another location you said 150. Guessing it was a mistake but just checking or did you change your ways..... Great informative content. About to apply Rubio. Secondly I used clear epoxy to fill voids, how can I bring it up to shine, has opaque look now from sander(120 grit) and I know Rubio won’t stick to it to make it shine. Afraid if I buff table where epoxy fills are it will change the finish. I don’t want it to gloss but it need to be brought up to a small luster to lose the haze. Any advice. Thanks

      Jackie Crowe- Talma ... I’ve had mixed results with trying to save a bark edge. Many times the bark has been banged up so badly during the logging process that it is no longer tight and secure. Rarely have I had a decent tight bark on the entire slab edge. Once when I thought it was good, and I went to the extra effort to heavily seal the bark to make it fairly “snag proof”, the darned bark released in places and fell off.
