US memory chip maker Micron Technology Saturday initiated the construction of its semiconductor packaging plant in Gujarat, India’s first such facility which is expected to spur the country’s chip manufacturing ambitions.
Micron has selected Tata Projects to build the semiconductor assembly and test facility in Sanand town, near Ahmedabad, with both signing a formal agreement during Saturday’s groundbreaking ceremony. Micron also said it has begun the recruitment process for the new plant.
The plant is to be developed in two phases. Phase one will include a 5,00,000-square-foot clean-room space, scheduled to be operational by late 2024. Sources with knowledge of the construction deal pegged the estimated first phase cost at Rs 4,000 crore. Apart from construction, Tata Projects will also handle certain operational parts of the plant, including sourcing the equipment required to package chips.

The chips manufacturing is just the start,india needs to fund iit and ask them to research in cheaper ways to manufacture the chips so that no subsidy is needed for future manufacturing,make iit free from reservations so that brightest students can be enrolled in this programme for design of manufacturing processes that are ten times cheaper and advanced.
Time for iit to step up and more importantly govt to step up the funding,the target should be to eliminate subsidies in chip manufacturing in 5 years time.ambitious but can be done.
Fund this through research cess on gst foe all goods and services just like education cess.

Micron's plant only an assembly plant. There is still no approved proposal for manufacturing wafers. Foxconn, Vedanta are still considering tie up with potential manufacturers to bring Fab tech to India.

Semiconductor packaging is simply packing of the fabricated microchips in the most optimum way and its NOT a semiconductor manufacturing! To manufacture semiconductor, the starting point is wafer fabrication and packing is one step downstream. Whilst it a welcome news, but India is still not at stage of making indigenous microprocessors! It’s important to make the distinction.
