  • In Ghana, thousands of illegal gold mines are threatening farmland, destroying the landscape and poisoning water supplies, leaving some communities struggling to find drinking water.
The mining has reached such proportions that treatment plants are being shut down, and there are warnings the country might be forced to import water.
    Al Jazeera’s Raheela Mahomed reports.

For what I'm seeing in my country , a legal mine is basically a multi-million dollar company that comes from europe or china and employs super low paid worker and they extract all that they can, dont invest back in the comunity, the country barely gain something from the deal (of course excluding high rank governament officials) and when its all over, they go away leaving pollution, deseases and extreme poverty.

Same in America and Europe. Its not west vs east its rich vs poor. And in mamy situation it's not even that but empathy vs greed. However even if you had maker spaces ( community areas where tools are stored and used) you would still need resources to build.
Consumerism and monetary policy are the biggest issues and also the hardest to tackle because a reduction in "quality of life" is a suicide sentence to many

Deep in the forest, Hidden from the police and task forces where a camera crew and reporter can just walk up and start talking to miners

You really have no clue how journalism works, you are an abject failure of the American or wherever education system

@@frumpycrust huh? So they didn't lug two or 3 backpacks of equipment into the jungle where cops couldn't make it. To take footage and interview these people? Either way, why would how this footage and interviews got done be part of any education system? Are you a bot just making antithesis statements for likes? That's what this feels like

Police and military task force are very much aware of their location. They guard and protect them at some sites

I feel so bad for the people in this video who have been seriously injured and have neurological diseases such as Parkinsons Disease from working in mines. I hope Joe is ok. I hate how Ghana does not create jobs for its people and people are forced to work in mining in order to make a little bit of money. Ghana needs to get rid of old government and bring in new government that will create jobs for its people.

Can someone please give them a couple of gold pans? This removes the mercury part within the process and still gives a fine result. When the gold particles are too small they can use crucibles with lead and cupels the lead away by oxidation, this is a way safer and cleaner for the environment and themself. How can my message be forwarded to those in Ghana?
