    Scores:
After my initial score I add or subtract points relative on how I perceive value (based on what I paid for the bottle). A zero value means I think the price is justified.
0-69.5 - Don’t bother trying, life is too short for bad spirit.
70-79.5 - Worth trying, but you’re not missing out if you don’t.
    80-84.5 - I recommend trying.
    85-87.5 - Definitely try this!
    88-92.5 - I recommend buying a bottle blind!
93-95.5 - Stuff you reserve for special pours!
96+ - The meaning of life.

Nice review and comparison. I have sat on a bottle of Bourbon SIB I picked up from 2012. I just bought a new Sherry SIB this weekend since it was at a decent price. I look forward to comparing them. I hear the old Bourbon barrel Balvenies are under rated.

I’ve had a few bottles of the current 15yo single barrel, sherry cask and I really like it!

The older Balvenie is what I and most of my friends prefer, as always well done.

Balvenie 12 single barrel does 80% performance of that in about 1/3 of the price. Not a bad deal.

I don't think so Joon. More like 60% for me. Not knocking the 12 but that extra few years took it to a far better level. Let's not forget that a few years ago the 15 was the price of the 12.

@@welshtoro3256Agree on 15 being far better. Yet, I would still say 12 is at 80%. 12 is essentialy all basics of 15 minus all wow factors. Considering that, I'm just sayin that for current price level, balvenie 12 is not a bad choice.

My local shop owner must've seen this video. He found a case of this discontinued Balvenie 15 yo in his storage locker and is selling them for $160 USD. A couple were from 1992 and another couple were from 1996. I told him I'd think about it. After watching this I may have to head back there after pay day.

One of my favorite discontinued (and much-missed) whiskies. Highly recommend adding water as some of these ex-bourbon SiBs will open up really dramatically, going much more floral and herbal.

Great review, in my first 6 months or so of drinking scotch this is the bottle that convinced me I needed to spend a bit more for quality beyond the intro ranges. It's been gone for a long while now, but hopefully I can find one collecting dust at a liquor store somewhere. Cheers!

I’m a little confused. If this was distilled in 99 and bottled in 2012, how is that a 15yo??

I am a fan of the 15 Yr Sherry Cask bottling. I have an older bottling of the 15 Yr (Distilled in 1996, Bottled in 2012) but have not yet opened it. I am sure I will be a fan of it as well.

Really enjoyed the new Sherry SiB 15yr. Probably won't get a chance to try something like these 2 but that older one sounds very nice! I am more of a Peat Head but have always liked the malty floral and honey notes you get in most Balvenies. Excellent review, Cheers!

Their peat week is solid, but overpriced in canada markets

I was lucky to have scored 2 or 3 of the SB15 sherry's out of province a few years ago all in for under $180 each. Prices have since gone up and the selection here in Canada is dwindling, everything is sold out/out of stock . Cheers!

Would like to have been able to get one of these. The current sherry cask version is good but for the price where I am there are better bottles available. Cheers Jeremy

I haven't had the opportunity to try those older SB15's but did manage to get my hands on a few of the SB15 Sherry ones before prices started to climb (really good stuff). Think now those SB15 Sherry are over $200 CAD, which is a little steep imo (like most of their bottles in Canada).

    • @SippersSocialClub
      @SippersSocialClub  3 роки тому +1

Not sure why Balvenie is so expensive in Canada (especially Ontario). We don't even get the 15 here cause it would be $700 lol

@@SippersSocialClub Yeah that's completely ridiculous! We're not far behind ya in NB, think the 17yr BW is $300, the last time I bought it was ender $180 3-4 years ago. Not sure who's actually paying for these prices lol

Interesting. Wish i could try these. Say, you mentioned auction. How the hell did you get it here? Mule/vacation or is there this magical way of getting products from abroad that doesnt cost 300% markup at the end of it?

Hi Jeremy, interesting review! Have you considered that the difference between the two bottlings might actually be OBE? Could explain the ‘mellowing’ of the alcohol burn in the older one, perhaps?

I love the old SB15, have 10 or so unopened. I always get all kinds of fruits.. kiwi, lemon to go along with honey and vanilla. Great whisky.
Can be a bit spirited or alcohol forward if it’s your first drink of the day.

@@topshelfwhisky Thanks Mike, joking apart it would be great to meet up. Oddly enough I have an old Welsh family friend who moved to Columbus many years ago. My only visit to the States was 1996 when I stayed in New Jersey and North Carolina. I love our community because we don't always have to agree but respect each others opinions. It's hard for people outside our whisky community to understand that we are a warm and generous lot and have made genuine friendships. I had a great time with Quig when he came to Britain an was a guest at my house. By the way, the offer is reciprocated should you come to the U.K or, even, Spain which is a f.....g brilliant place. (I know you like good food my friend - you would love it.)
