    I tell you something, farmers do a power of work with no end in sight.. I have a good neighbor who is a small dairy farmer, and each time I pass the yard I hear him on the tractor or in the parlour with the radio on.. Hes some Man like.. Everyone is at home watching telly or out doing activities, and the neighbor is up there in the yard, tearing away come rain wind or sun !!
    Mental health is very important like.. I called into him on Newyears day just to say hello to him.. He mightn't have seen anyone at all over the Christmas... I always think of him and wonder how hes doing, and of course I spare a thought for him when I pull the milk out for a cup of tea... More power to the Farmers... We'd all be in big trouble if there was less of ye..

    Had the same issue with a platform scales that we had couldn’t get consistent weights. We made up a crate with weigh cells from same company and reused the clock made a big difference same weight every time we check with tractor weight. We are fattening limousin bulls here their killout % would be 60 to 63 under 16mths up to 450 kg. Interesting videos you are making keep it up👍from Wexford

    Phil, if you are seeing consistently that when the first cows are removed to final finish that the others then come on soo much - then you need to rethink your feeding setup. The question is how can you change your setup to ensure all cows have access to adequate feed to finish off. Time is money, so having cows being held back by others who eat their share - needs to be resolved. The quicker you are finished, the more cost effective and profitable the process is.
    Perhaps look at a new feeding barrier - similar to what Tom has just installed in his new shed or having less cows housed together.
    If you do the same thing over and over ....you will only get the same result over and over, so without change the same will happen again next year.
    It's worth trying something new to see if you can improve.

    • @wallm1206
      @wallm1206 2 роки тому +6

      There's not many farms in Ireland that have space for every animal to eat all at the same time, the best thing to do is group by size but then you come into space issues. It's far from simple and building a new shed or getting new barriers is expensive.....its hard to no what to do especially when you're used to a system which is working or has worked in the past.

      we can all massage the figures but just because the feed is homegrown does not mean it cheaper than bought in feed especially as phil has a lot of leased land to pay for and only getting average yields compared to farms in southern counties

    I'd say spend less time on UA-cam and dehorn them as calves Phil. Statistics are great and everything but buying cheap calves that dairy lads don't want isn't exactly a good business model for producing quality Irish beef. Good channel though and keep up the good work .
