It's rare for me to watch Filipino movies ever since I got hooked with other countries' films. However, this saddened me after I realized how we had one of the oldest film industries and now it's declining. Thus, I will start adding more Pinoy films on my movie watchlist and invite my family and friends to watch Filipino movies together.
As a Filipino American filmmaker, I find this quite interesting to watch and informative about the Philippine movie industry. I've been studying other forms of cinema from Hollywood, Japanese cinema, etc. But I really want to know about Philippine cinema. The thing is i only seen the "bad" films - ones that are supposed to be taken seriously but somehow become unintentionally funny (think of scenes that have dramatic music). I don't believe Philippine cinema is dead. but agree is in it's comatose state.
If one watches only mainstream Philippine movies, then I agree that PhCinema is in coma. But if you explore more into the Philippine film world, you'll see that it's very much alive.
It's been 3 years since your comment so I assume you learned a lot by now. PH Cinema is celebrating it's centennial this year. Restoration projects of old Filipino films are on-going.

there's one thing he missed about the filipino movie industry, or the whole showbiz industry for that matter. this point he made about movie industry advertising korea's samsung and kia by way of movies -that is not applicable in the philippines because the showbiz industry has a proud tradition of demeaning filipino goods, filipino attitudes, and last but not the least -filipino faces. just watch abs-cbn/star cinema for example: 90% of their talents does not represent the face of philippine's general population, all of the main casts would look like foreigners, dressing up like americans, talking with a poorly pronounced tagalog accent. the small group of people in the showbiz industry representing the REAL face of the general population are all reduced to clowns, sassy sidekicks, punching bags and extras. in short, even with a govt support, the points that you covered happening in korea for example will not happen in the philippines because the showbiz industry itself have a proud tradition of demeaning the real filipino face, goods and tradition. AND THAT IS ALL YOUR FAULT (BY ALL, I MEAN ALL OF YOU IN THE PINOY SHOWBIZ INDUSTRY).
nakakahiya showbiz natin. walang ethnic pride. mga artistang mga pang german o french o british ang mga pangalan at mukha. mga halos walang bahid ng pagkapilipino liban sa pagkakaroon nila ng mga nanay na tsimay. mga bulol pa kung magtagalog. tingin sa atin ng mga taga west mga sumasamba tayo sa kanila. sana bigyan ng priority yung mga talagang pinoy/asyano nating mga artista. marami naman tayong mga pogi at magaganda at talentado na hindi parang imported ang mga pangalan, mukha, at pananalita.
The last two films I watched were Heneral Luna and Bonifacio, and they were great movies (Luna being better of course) but its so sad that Filipino movies that are good dont do well in terms of Box Office, since we dont really watch them coz theyre not mainstream, like look at Vice Ganda's movies or Ai-Ai's movies, theyre shit! But people still watch them. This is why i get annoyed with filipinos coz we only want to watch mainstream films and not the good indie films
This also goes the same for America. Average of the films presented are basically blockbusters, and the more independent goes on basically every small-chain theater. At least they have Netflix to profit decently.
PHILIPPINE cinema will continue to decline if producers continue to patroniize bong revilla,kris aquino,vice ganda and ai ai and winn deramas comedies.... at least with kris aquino her movie fenf shui was promising.

Watching Filipino movies is one of my hobbies especially when I am bored or stress. After watching TED talk I learn that it's really important to support and appreciate Filipino Film industry. From now on, I will encourage those people who less likely to watch Filipino films.
Watching this right now makes me feel sad because korean and other western films are just getting more in trend while Filipino movies still doesn't make it to the top in other countries. We Filipinos have great actors and I hope that they can act in amazing films written by great writers.
Phil Cinema is dead because there is no competition. Only one studio nearly controls the entire film industry. This is a classic example of one company which became so large ( how it got big is another subject to discuss ) resulting to monopolization.
Personally, I like to watch Filipino films because it can relieve my stress. However after watching this Ted talk I learned more about what is film is all about. One thing I will apply what I've learned from this Ted talk is that I will encourage everyone to watch more Filipino movies and support it.
2021, I watch korean movies, dramas and even variety shows. After watching this I felt so sorry to our entertainment industry for not supporting it as much as I could.
I WAS one of those people he described. People who gave PITY on our Phil. Culture being raised to think mostly everything, not just Cinema, HERE, is Baduy, Corny etc. And I did see it too, cause yes our Economy tends to cater to the larger scale which the majority here in the Phil is well sorry to say, an un-Educated demographic. But Poverty is another Big shitty Government subject matter so anyways. As Maturity & Understanding grew on me, instead of PITY I now show HOPE. A new Generation is Taking over, I wiser one. A Generation that I'm sure, with the right motives and Work ethic will succeed in improving this 3RD world country's mediocre status. Hopefully then after that bigger un-educated demographic, will become SMALLER, Follow through, Keep it up and STEP IT UP. Filipino Film when Given a proper Budget & Crew, I can clearly see and say can Make it BIG.
2024 and watched this because of CONTEMPORARY WORLD subject hehe. I hope producers and film makers create good quality movies with new story and excellent visual effects. I love watching old Filipino movies, it is sad that they're better than today's. Please upgrade and develop more.
I am a fan of Filipino movies ever since because I can relate to most of its context and I can feel it really getting into my nerves. After seeing this video, my motivation in supporting Filipino movies becomes greater and I will share this information with my family and close friends for them to realize how important watching and patronizing Filipino films are.
Who Killed Philippine Cinema? The four main reason are: 1. Piracy 2. High Tax 3. Foreign Competition 4. Lack of local support. Of the 4 list above, the one that has the biggest negative impact is piracy. This is according to a recent study done recently.

Pero sa akin, yung thinking o escape goat na ang Masa ay ang dahilan kung bakit ang mga local tv at movie content producer ay sub par level lang ang product nila ay convenient excuse lang yan na parating ginagamit ng mga content producers sa incompetent nila, at sa low quality product nila. Renerepeat rin yan ng marami. Imbes na ang mga content producers ang sisihin dahil sa incompetent nila at sa mga low quality na product nila, pinapasa ang blame sa mga Filipino consumer. Mind you, mga Filipino Consumer hindi rin lang naman Filipino content ang kino-consume kundi pati rin mga high quality hollywood, korean, japanese, british, at iba pang foreign content na ang kalidad ay matataas pa at deep kumpara sa local content. In fact, ang biggest competition ng Philippine Cinema Industry ay ang mga foreign content gaya ng hollywood, korean, japanese, at iba pa. So yung tired argument na palaging ginagamit ng mga incompetent local content producers sa low quality product nila, na ang rason hindi sila makagawa ng high quality content dahil low quality ang gusto ng Filipino Consumers ay B.S. Let's think outside the box and put the blame where it really lies and not shift the blame elsewhere.
@Gian anciro Tama ka naman na pera pera lang yan at rating rating, at taking risk. Pero ang challenge sa mga content producers ay kaya ba nila makagawa ng quality at meaningful film na at the same time a commercial success? Lav Diaz is more into art film making so his film is not going to be received by a lot of ordinary movie going people like a lot of film in that kind of genre.

I really love watching Filipino film,Everytime I watch those film make me emotional I feel what the story tells.I learn that we should appreciate Filipino film and I always watch when I have a free time they are the best for me even though some of them are nonsense . When I was a kid, I already love Filipino Films and programs like for education(sineskwela,siyensiya,hiraya manawari,matinik and many more) to drama comedy and etc. I was born to be proud of filipino films. Mr. Pepe Diokno, I think your dream is starting to be realized. Although it's in a slow pace but the quality of movies are getting better and movies are now getting more Filipino patrons. Hopefully this will gradually continue to improve.
We have the creativity, the ideas. Our indie films shows so. But let's face it. To make a good movie, you need money. And to make a movie known, you need advertisements. Which needs more money. This monetary problem could be solved by the gov't.'s support. And for the "masa" to actually take notice of the good films we are making.
Norte, the End of History (2013), 2 Cool 2 Be 4gotten (2016), Himala (1982), Manila: In the Claws of Light (1975) and Insiang (1976) are the only Filipino films that i put on my "Greatest Movie" list. Most of these movies are from U.S., U.K. and from other parts of the globe 🌏 👍👍 Martin Scorsese said it to himself that he loved Lino Brocka's films and also he liked Lav Diaz's Norte, the End of History and Petersen Vargas' 2 Cool 2 Be 4gotten. 👍👍
I want to be a film director at the age of 15 don't listen to those people around na nag sasabi na wala kang mapapala dyan because if you really love doing that then you shouldn't stop doing what you love! Yes it'll cost money pero it'll be worth it.

My Mom loves Filipino movies. When me and my siblings were kids, she would take us to a cinema. It was fun memories, I told my mom that I want to become a well-known Filipino Film Director someday ( I didn't pursue it, because I know it is difficult to enter and survive in that industry). Though, we don't go to cinema anymore, because we're too busy to go out. However, we still watched Filipino Documentaries at home together. We do support it. Hoping that they make a film series about Philippine History. I really loved Heneral Luna and Goyo.
One thing I would like to see done in Philippine Cinema is that they should stop injecting english sentences in the dialogue of the movies. Almost all of the new movies that are coming out nowadays do that. Movie makers or scriptwriters should realized that that practice of injecting english sentences in the dialogue is not good because it ruins the flow of the dialogue. It will also make the Actors/Actress not be able to express themselves more naturally if they have to speak english sentences in the dialogue because english is not the native language of many actors/actresses, and since it is not their native language, they will not be able to express themselves better than they would otherwise be speaking in tagalog. Result would be that their acting ability suffers. Also, making the actors/actress speak english sentences in the dialogue would make them look pretentious and look like a trying-hard kano. Another thing is that when movie makers and scriptwriters inject english sentences in the dialogue of the movie, the international appeal or acceptance of our movies from foreign audience will not be as good as when the dialogue of the movie uses only one language and that should be tagalog only with no injected of english sentences. If we want our movies to become popular outside the Philippines, then movie makers should realized that injecting english sentences in the dialogue is frowned upon by foreign audiences specially from native english speakers, when they have to watch a Filipino movie peppered with english sentences in the dialogue. It's no surprised then that the number one issue, or I should say complaint coming from foreign audience about our movies is the very same problem when actors/actress in the movie be speaking tagalog one moment and english the next from out of the blue. It is just awkward and unappealing to foreign audience to watch that kind of dialogue in the movie, specially when one is not used to watching PH movies.

quantity over quality. the mentality of producing more just so they can earn more money, without thinking of a more clever concept. the reason "people demand this kind of story line or that kind of story line" hinders writers from making a masterpiece. Well that's from 5 years ago and you also can't deny that the Korean film progress as much from before. Though we could also see a change from our local just like from vincentiments controversial topics and tba studio that we have a shot for more but this doesn't guarantee that Filipino Cinema will make it. I also see that in order to proceed for bigger projects we need funds and a company that have similar vision.
The fact that this was presented primarily in English shows that there will always be divide between the rich and the poor. You know our culture is messed up when speaking fluently in our main language (Filipino), in our own country is considered informal and frowned upon. I don’t think Korea has this problem, people in lower socio-economic watch and enjoy the same movies rich people do.
People who said that the Filipino films are crap, probably watched only films shown in MMFF and a few that got out of the theaters from time to time by big publishing houses. Few bothered looking for good films, like found in Cinemalaya entries. Also, Indie films are also moving away from the "discovering ones sexuality" theme and starts to explore other areas of interest. The only problem I see, particular for people who look for good local film is awareness. There should be a single place where all of the trailers of upcoming films will be placed, so that people will know what films they might want to watch in theaters, and for the likes of SM to show considerable interest to have it shown in their movie houses.

Actually, I don't watch much filipino movies not because it's boring but I became addicted to Korean film movies. After watching the TED Talk there I realized that what I was doing was wrong that I choose to watch other movies rather than our own. So there I learned that we should love and appreciate the creation of our country and not be the reason that the rate of our filipino film movies dropped even more because of us.
Before watching this video, I thought of filipino movies are made only just for entertainment. But I have learned that there are so many things involved in making a movie, especially Filipino movies and that changed my perspective. I need to share this information to all of my friends and relatives and encourage them to watch Filipino movies because that doesn't only help preserve our Philippine cinema but we are helping our cinema industry as well.
Most of the Producers and or directors are only after MONEY and not the Cinematography and Quality of a movie.. So sad look at the 2019 films, there's a movie with a title Mindanao who dominates the MMFF 2019 award night gathering the Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Child Actress, Best Picture, and alot more but the Cinema houses around the Philippines are pulling out the movie, because another movie played by VICE GANDA and ANNE Curtis (The Countries BOX OFFICE QUEENS) with"The Mall the Merrier" that didn't get any cinematic award is getting box office, although the movie is just to give laughter to the audience and money talks.. And imagine that's a "FILM FESTIVAL" metro Manila film festival.. The Philippines Film Legacy died already.
our indie films are doing good indeed in a creative level. but you dont need a large amt of money to make a good movie, these days what you just need is a smartphone, youtube and creativity. and other thing is you cant force the "masa" to appreciate good movies. movies is a form of art not a business model anymore.
There are various reason why many people find foreign film more enjoyable than the film produced in their own countries. Firstly, the Budget for foreign movies are higher than the other. So that they can use various types of action and special effects and costly short screens. As a result, this movie is become more attractive as well as cheaply because this movie release in the international market so that they earn more money than national film. Secondly, the language problem prevents people to watching movies. In the same way, the Internation movie is edit in various language so people prefer foreign movies. I feel bad that lots of Filipino don’t appreciate how beautiful Filipino films are. This TedTalk helps me, and everyone watching how important to support local produced films.

Hopefully the next step to restoring films from the earlier days of Philippine cinema is a good business model for distributing them, similar maybe to netflix or the itunes. I both watch Filipino films and foreign films, even though it's quite obvious their are differences. Somehow, Filipino films are really great if we try to embrace it and watch it. One thing I will do to apply what I've learned from this Ted Talk is that I will inform my families and friends how beautiful are Filipino films and urge them to watch Filipino movies.
Admittedly, I reject phil movie due to the fact that film is a boring and etc. You can predict whats mean and ending of the story. However, when I watched this video by Mr. Pepe Diokno, I realized that PHmovie is the best at all. One thing or one problem why PH film was behind in other developed countries is maybe our government lacked of support in our own entertainment industry. This is a great platform for learning about Philippine cinema. The problem with Philippine cinema is actually both audiences and the producers. Audiences because producers already prepared quality Filipino films. However, some Filipino audiences still don't like it not because of kabaduyan but because they're just don't used to watching new ones or even a different type of films. Ang Larawan, for example, because Ang Larawan got most number of awards in MMFF Awards and had great feedbacks and yet, it still ended ranking 7th place in MMFF box office with P29 Million only. And producers because just because audiences are not used to out-of-the-box story concepts, they would agree sticking only to those story concepts that audiences are used to. Another problem for Philippine cinema is the cultural preservation restrictions for historical. Because we have great stories in different regions in the Philippines like Biag Ni Lam-Ang and Rajah Sulayman that deserve to have the film version and not just being read and studied only in schools. And another is the misinterpretation of some people as might be harmful to children only because of the fight scenes. Also, another problem is for fantasy, some people would describe fantasy as not good for children also only because of the fight scenes that might also be harmful. The keyword here is 'ordinary stereotyping'. That's the same idea with Pinoy teleseryes. Just because Filipinos are not used to out-of-the-box stories, does it mean that we should only stick to what Filipinos are only used to watch? That's why I still salute to those audiences and producers who never gave up supporting out-of-the-box story concepts despite of the sad reality that Filipinos are still used to watch those story concepts that are familiar to them.
To be honest I rarely watch Filipino films. But it changed my perspectives of the challenges that the film industry facing. So we should not say bad things about our films because I know that filmmakers also doing their best to offer us good movies and we should appreciate it.

One of my hobbies is watching films. At a younger age, I loved Filipino Cinema that teaches me how to speak Tagalog but as I grow up Hollywood films come up and I used to compare them to Filipino films. What we watch will manipulate our minds on who we want to be. This video made me realize that it's time to avoid that kind of mindset instead loved Filipino film. Filipino films that have had critical acclaim often don't do well in the box office. The Woman Who Left won the Golden Lion at Venice and grossed about $3,000+, Ma Rosa won Cannes Best Actress Award for Jaclyn Jose only got $88k. That's not even a fraction of how much those formulaic mainstream films.
I always see comments how are indie films are so good but no matter good they are if people don’t even know they exists o where to watch them? Like how many OFW’s are there? Where we can see them? How do we even know about them?
When I was still young at age I always watch Filipino films because I can relate, or I apply their emotions to myself so that I can understand the film. But now, I watching more on Korean drama's and also the films in the other countries. Becuase nowadays, I find Filipino films or movies boring. After watching this TED talk I felt sorry, because I'm a Filipina but I cant even support or just watch Filipino films. I'm here for an assessment and i'm glad I watched this. Ito yung topic na lagi ko din iniisip. I wish filipinos would open their eyes and make a great movies again not depending on the people's demands. Most of our movies kasi nonsense kaya I must say na isa ako dun sa mga taong nagsasabing "ayokong manood ng filipino movies kasi corny, baduy, etc." But I'm still hoping na mag improve parin ang entertainment industry dito sa Pilipinas because so many Filipinos are soooo talented.

Today's Philippine cinema or telenovela was very different from what it used to be. Furthermore, today's cinema is not particularly appealing to young audiences. Filipino televiewers were looking for more interesting and sentimental films in which they could receive good values and appreciation. I am saddened by what has happened to our Philippine cinema; yes, it has changed my perspective because when I was a teenager, I was so fond of foreign cinema/film/drama that I did not consider the cost to our future cinemas. To rekindle my interest in Philippine cinema, I attempted to watch two or more indie films per week or month.
2024, just saw GOMBURZA and General Luna, if we keep making movies like those two (and other similar movies) we might be able to restore our identity through the silver screen
There is a great potential for our cinema industry to become a big industry both locally and internationally but the shakers and movers in the PH cinema industry, the government, the local support, has to do more in order to harness and realized that potential to become a reality. This is an exciting time for the PH cinema industry and television industry and I do hope the industry can rise to the challenge on putting the industry into a whole new level of success locally and internationally.
I sometimes watched Filipino Movies but tend to to stop watching it becuase some movies has the same plots where you can predict it already and it won't give me this thrill or butterflyies in my stomach,on the otherhand after watching this I've learned to appreciate and see the beauty of Filipino Mvies that is not just shown from big production but also those good indie films. From now on, instead of watching a lot of korean variety , I will start watching Filipino movies every friday night (movie date)with my family and friends.
I really love watching movies, but I preferred watching foreign movies instead of filipino movies ever since. It's because I can only see in our entertainment industry that art pieces from other countries are much preferable. For me, local films or movies are not terribly bad but it is way far behind than foreign movies. However, after watching this video I found it quite useful and informative to watch and it changed my perspective in Filipino film industry. I realized and learn to appreciate the beauty of Filipino film. Starting today, I will encourage everyone to appreciate and value our Filipino film.

It's rare for me to watch Filipino movies ever since I got hooked with other countries' films. However, this saddened me after I realized how we had one of the oldest film industries and now it's declining. Thus, I will start adding more Pinoy films on my movie watchlist and invite my family and friends to watch Filipino movies together.
As a Filipino American filmmaker, I find this quite interesting to watch and informative about the Philippine movie industry. I've been studying other forms of cinema from Hollywood, Japanese cinema, etc. But I really want to know about Philippine cinema. The thing is i only seen the "bad" films - ones that are supposed to be taken seriously but somehow become unintentionally funny (think of scenes that have dramatic music).
I don't believe Philippine cinema is dead. but agree is in it's comatose state.
If one watches only mainstream Philippine movies, then I agree that PhCinema is in coma. But if you explore more into the Philippine film world, you'll see that it's very much alive.

there's one thing he missed about the filipino movie industry, or the whole showbiz industry for that matter. this point he made about movie industry advertising korea's samsung and kia by way of movies -that is not applicable in the philippines because the showbiz industry has a proud tradition of demeaning filipino goods, filipino attitudes, and last but not the least -filipino faces. just watch abs-cbn/star cinema for example: 90% of their talents does not represent the face of philippine's general population, all of the main casts would look like foreigners, dressing up like americans, talking with a poorly pronounced tagalog accent. the small group of people in the showbiz industry representing the REAL face of the general population are all reduced to clowns, sassy sidekicks, punching bags and extras. in short, even with a govt support, the points that you covered happening in korea for example will not happen in the philippines because the showbiz industry itself have a proud tradition of demeaning the real filipino face, goods and tradition. AND THAT IS ALL YOUR FAULT (BY ALL, I MEAN ALL OF YOU IN THE PINOY SHOWBIZ INDUSTRY).

The last two films I watched were Heneral Luna and Bonifacio, and they were great movies (Luna being better of course) but its so sad that Filipino movies that are good dont do well in terms of Box Office, since we dont really watch them coz theyre not mainstream, like look at Vice Ganda's movies or Ai-Ai's movies, theyre shit! But people still watch them. This is why i get annoyed with filipinos coz we only want to watch mainstream films and not the good indie films

Watching Filipino movies is one of my hobbies especially when I am bored or stress. After watching TED talk I learn that it's really important to support and appreciate Filipino Film industry. From now on, I will encourage those people who less likely to watch Filipino films.

Phil Cinema is dead because there is no competition. Only one studio nearly controls the entire film industry. This is a classic example of one company which became so large ( how it got big is another subject to discuss ) resulting to monopolization.
That's why i love indies.
Personally, I like to watch Filipino films because it can relieve my stress. However after watching this Ted talk I learned more about what is film is all about. One thing I will apply what I've learned from this Ted talk is that I will encourage everyone to watch more Filipino movies and support it.
2021, I watch korean movies, dramas and even variety shows. After watching this I felt so sorry to our entertainment industry for not supporting it as much as I could.
I WAS one of those people he described. People who gave PITY on our Phil. Culture being raised to think mostly everything, not just Cinema, HERE, is Baduy, Corny etc. And I did see it too, cause yes our Economy tends to cater to the larger scale which the majority here in the Phil is well sorry to say, an un-Educated demographic. But Poverty is another Big shitty Government subject matter so anyways.
As Maturity & Understanding grew on me, instead of PITY I now show HOPE. A new Generation is Taking over, I wiser one. A Generation that I'm sure, with the right motives and Work ethic will succeed in improving this 3RD world country's mediocre status.
Hopefully then after that bigger un-educated demographic, will become SMALLER, Follow through, Keep it up and STEP IT UP.

I am a fan of Filipino movies ever since because I can relate to most of its context and I can feel it really getting into my nerves. After seeing this video, my motivation in supporting Filipino movies becomes greater and I will share this information with my family and close friends for them to realize how important watching and patronizing Filipino films are.
Who Killed Philippine Cinema? The four main reason are:
1. Piracy
2. High Tax
3. Foreign Competition
4. Lack of local support.
Of the 4 list above, the one that has the biggest negative impact is piracy. This is according to a recent study done recently.

We have the creativity, the ideas. Our indie films shows so. But let's face it. To make a good movie, you need money. And to make a movie known, you need advertisements. Which needs more money. Norte, the End of History (2013), 2 Cool 2 Be 4gotten (2016), Himala (1982), Manila: In the Claws of Light (1975) and Insiang (1976) are the only Filipino films that i put on my "Greatest Movie" list. My Mom loves Filipino movies. When me and my siblings were kids, she would take us to a cinema. It was fun memories, I told my mom that I want to become a well-known Filipino Film Director someday ( I didn't pursue it, because I know it is difficult to enter and survive in that industry). Though, we don't go to cinema anymore, because we're too busy to go out. However, we still watched Filipino Documentaries at home together. We do support it. Hoping that they make a film series about Philippine History. I really loved Heneral Luna and Goyo.
One thing I would like to see done in Philippine Cinema is that they should stop injecting english sentences in the dialogue of the movies. Almost all of the new movies that are coming out nowadays do that. Movie makers or scriptwriters should realized that that practice of injecting english sentences in the dialogue is not good because it ruins the flow of the dialogue. It will also make the Actors/Actress not be able to express themselves more naturally if they have to speak english sentences in the dialogue because english is not the native language of many actors/actresses, and since it is not their native language, they will not be able to express themselves better than they would otherwise be speaking in tagalog. Result would be that their acting ability suffers. Also, making the actors/actress speak english sentences in the dialogue would make them look pretentious and look like a trying-hard kano. Another thing is that when movie makers and scriptwriters inject english sentences in the dialogue of the movie, the international appeal or acceptance of our movies from foreign audience will not be as good as when the dialogue of the movie uses only one language and that should be tagalog only with no injected of english sentences. If we want our movies to become popular outside the Philippines, then movie makers should realized that injecting english sentences in the dialogue is frowned upon by foreign audiences specially from native english speakers, when they have to watch a Filipino movie peppered with english sentences in the dialogue. It's no surprised then that the number one issue, or I should say complaint coming from foreign audience about our movies is the very same problem when actors/actress in the movie be speaking tagalog one moment and english the next from out of the blue. It is just awkward and unappealing to foreign audience to watch that kind of dialogue in the movie, specially when one is not used to watching PH movies.

Well that's from 5 years ago and you also can't deny that the Korean film progress as much from before. Though we could also see a change from our local just like from vincentiments controversial topics and tba studio that we have a shot for more but this doesn't guarantee that Filipino Cinema will make it. I also see that in order to proceed for bigger projects we need funds and a company that have similar vision.

The fact that this was presented primarily in English shows that there will always be divide between the rich and the poor.
You know our culture is messed up when speaking fluently in our main language (Filipino), in our own country is considered informal and frowned upon. I don’t think Korea has this problem, people in lower socio-economic watch and enjoy the same movies rich people do.

People who said that the Filipino films are crap, probably watched only films shown in MMFF and a few that got out of the theaters from time to time by big publishing houses. Few bothered looking for good films, like found in Cinemalaya entries. Also, Indie films are also moving away from the "discovering ones sexuality" theme and starts to explore other areas of interest.
The only problem I see, particular for people who look for good local film is awareness. There should be a single place where all of the trailers of upcoming films will be placed, so that people will know what films they might want to watch in theaters, and for the likes of SM to show considerable interest to have it shown in their movie houses.

Actually, I don't watch much filipino movies not because it's boring but I became addicted to Korean film movies. After watching the TED Talk there I realized that what I was doing was wrong that I choose to watch other movies rather than our own. So there I learned that we should love and appreciate the creation of our country and not be the reason that the rate of our filipino film movies dropped even more because of us.
Before watching this video, I thought of filipino movies are made only just for entertainment. But I have learned that there are so many things involved in making a movie, especially Filipino movies and that changed my perspective. I need to share this information to all of my friends and relatives and encourage them to watch Filipino movies because that doesn't only help preserve our Philippine cinema but we are helping our cinema industry as well.

Most of the Producers and or directors are only after MONEY and not the Cinematography and Quality of a movie.. So sad look at the 2019 films, there's a movie with a title Mindanao who dominates the MMFF 2019 award night gathering the Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Child Actress, Best Picture, and alot more but the Cinema houses around the Philippines are pulling out the movie, because another movie played by VICE GANDA and ANNE Curtis (The Countries BOX OFFICE QUEENS) with"The Mall the Merrier" that didn't get any cinematic award is getting box office, although the movie is just to give laughter to the audience and money talks.. And imagine that's a "FILM FESTIVAL" metro Manila film festival.. The Philippines Film Legacy died already.
our indie films are doing good indeed in a creative level. but you dont need a large amt of money to make a good movie, these days what you just need is a smartphone, youtube and creativity. and other thing is you cant force the "masa" to appreciate good movies. movies is a form of art not a business model anymore.
There are various reason why many people find foreign film more enjoyable than the film produced in their own countries. Firstly, the Budget for foreign movies are higher than the other. So that they can use various types of action and special effects and costly short screens. As a result, this movie is become more attractive as well as cheaply because this movie release in the international market so that they earn more money than national film. Secondly, the language problem prevents people to watching movies. In the same way, the Internation movie is edit in various language so people prefer foreign movies.

I really love watching Filipino movies because film gives us the most effective record of the past of the culture, the filipino values, attitudes, mores and way of life. Having close family ties that also one of their unique traits every Filipino.
This video i learn need to support local films that proudly made, it educates us on what’s happening in our country.
Hopefully the next step to restoring films from the earlier days of Philippine cinema is a good business model for distributing them, similar maybe to netflix or the itunes. The easier it is for people to have access to these hidden gems of our heritage, the better we can promote them to our young film makers, and our kababayans specially those living outside the country.

I admit, I really like watching filipinos movies because films gives us must effective also the values, the norms of every filipinos, the attitude that we can get to the movie we watch. After seeing this video, my motivation in life by supporting the filipino movies are very great. I also want to share this to my fellow teenagers, friends, my family and etc..

Quantity wise Philippine Cinema is back. In terms of quality its been dead for quite some time. That's where the problem is.

I both watch Filipino films and foreign films, even though it's quite obvious their are differences. Somehow, Filipino films are really great if we try to embrace it and watch it. One thing I will do to apply what I've learned from this Ted Talk is that I will inform my families and friends how beautiful are Filipino films and urge them to watch Filipino movies.
Admittedly, I reject phil movie due to the fact that film is a boring and etc. You can predict whats mean and ending of the story. However, when I watched this video by Mr. Pepe Diokno, I realized that PHmovie is the best at all. One thing or one problem why PH film was behind in other developed countries is maybe our government lacked of support in our own entertainment industry. This is a great platform for learning about Philippine cinema.
The problem with Philippine cinema is actually both audiences and the producers. Audiences because producers already prepared quality Filipino films. However, some Filipino audiences still don't like it not because of kabaduyan but because they're just don't used to watching new ones or even a different type of films. Ang Larawan, for example, because Ang Larawan got most number of awards in MMFF Awards and had great feedbacks and yet, it still ended ranking 7th place in MMFF box office with P29 Million only. And producers because just because audiences are not used to out-of-the-box story concepts, they would agree sticking only to those story concepts that audiences are used to.
Another problem for Philippine cinema is the cultural preservation restrictions for historical. Because we have great stories in different regions in the Philippines like Biag Ni Lam-Ang and Rajah Sulayman that deserve to have the film version and not just being read and studied only in schools. And another is the misinterpretation of some people as might be harmful to children only because of the fight scenes. Also, another problem is for fantasy, some people would describe fantasy as not good for children also only because of the fight scenes that might also be harmful.
The keyword here is 'ordinary stereotyping'. That's the same idea with Pinoy teleseryes. Just because Filipinos are not used to out-of-the-box stories, does it mean that we should only stick to what Filipinos are only used to watch?
That's why I still salute to those audiences and producers who never gave up supporting out-of-the-box story concepts despite of the sad reality that Filipinos are still used to watch those story concepts that are familiar to them.
To be honest I rarely watch Filipino films. But it changed my perspectives of the challenges that the film industry facing. So we should not say bad things about our films because I know that filmmakers also doing their best to offer us good movies and we should appreciate it.
Actually, I rarely watch Filipino films, not because they're boring. I find Filipino movies have the same stories as other movies. In short, they are not as thrilling anymore because you already know what will happen next. To be honest, I am influenced by watching Korean films, but these TED talks change my perspective on supporting our own Filipino film industry. From now on, I will encourage myself, my family, friends, and relatives to appreciate Filipino films.
One of my hobbies is watching films. At a younger age, I loved Filipino Cinema that teaches me how to speak Tagalog but as I grow up Hollywood films come up and I used to compare them to Filipino films. What we watch will manipulate our minds on who we want to be. This video made me realize that it's time to avoid that kind of mindset instead loved Filipino film. I encourage you all to watch the Filipino film and please do not compare it to foreign filmmakers.
My favorite film since i watched movie is Filipino film. I really love watching filipino film because everytime I watch it i really enjoy. And i can feel the emotions of their character thats why i love fililipno film.

BOY GOD is loved worldwide but yeah quality films should come out on a regular basis.
Filipino films that have had critical acclaim often don't do well in the box office. The Woman Who Left won the Golden Lion at Venice and grossed about $3,000+, Ma Rosa won Cannes Best Actress Award for Jaclyn Jose only got $88k. That's not even a fraction of how much those formulaic mainstream films.
I always see comments how are indie films are so good but no matter good they are if people don’t even know they exists o where to watch them? Like how many OFW’s are there? Where we can see them? How do we even know about them?

When I was still young at age I always watch Filipino films because I can relate, or I apply their emotions to myself so that I can understand the film. But now, I watching more on Korean drama's and also the films in the other countries. Becuase nowadays, I find Filipino films or movies boring. After watching this TED talk I felt sorry, because I'm a Filipina but I cant even support or just watch Filipino films. I'll try to watch more Filipino movies together with family or friends or encouraged them to see how beautiful Filipino films is.
I'm here for an assessment and i'm glad I watched this. Ito yung topic na lagi ko din iniisip. I wish filipinos would open their eyes and make a great movies again not depending on the people's demands. Most of our movies kasi nonsense kaya I must say na isa ako dun sa mga taong nagsasabing "ayokong manood ng filipino movies kasi corny, baduy, etc."
But I'm still hoping na mag improve parin ang entertainment industry dito sa Pilipinas because so many Filipinos are soooo talented.

Today's Philippine cinema or telenovela was very different from what it used to be. Furthermore, today's cinema is not particularly appealing to young audiences. Filipino televiewers were looking for more interesting and sentimental films in which they could receive good values and appreciation. I am saddened by what has happened to our Philippine cinema; yes, it has changed my perspective because when I was a teenager, I was so fond of foreign cinema/film/drama that I did not consider the cost to our future cinemas. To rekindle my interest in Philippine cinema, I attempted to watch two or more indie films per week or month.

2024, just saw GOMBURZA and General Luna, if we keep making movies like those two (and other similar movies) we might be able to restore our identity through the silver screen

There is a great potential for our cinema industry to become a big industry both locally and internationally but the shakers and movers in the PH cinema industry, the government, the local support, has to do more in order to harness and realized that potential to become a reality. This is an exciting time for the PH cinema industry and television industry and I do hope the industry can rise to the challenge on putting the industry into a whole new level of success locally and internationally.

I sometimes watched Filipino Movies but tend to to stop watching it becuase some movies has the same plots where you can predict it already and it won't give me this thrill or butterflyies in my stomach,on the otherhand after watching this I've learned to appreciate and see the beauty of Filipino Mvies that is not just shown from big production but also those good indie films. From now on, instead of watching a lot of korean variety , I will start watching Filipino movies every friday night (movie date)with my family and friends.
I really love watching movies, but I preferred watching foreign movies instead of filipino movies ever since. It's because I can only see in our entertainment industry that art pieces from other countries are much preferable. For me, local films or movies are not terribly bad but it is way far behind than foreign movies. However, after watching this video I found it quite useful and informative to watch and it changed my perspective in Filipino film industry. I realized and learn to appreciate the beauty of Filipino film. Starting today, I will encourage everyone to appreciate and value our Filipino film.
