Travis, no one can argue about your ability to maintain a successful reef tank which is very evident in your videos. I agree with you on the need to quarantining fish and that there are different levels of QT from just observation to actively treating . But I disagree with you on prophylactic treatment with copper. In your analogy with the newborn infant, the doctor confirmed the disease before starting treatment. With any treatment it is about risk vs. benefit. While copper is effective, studies have shown it is also very toxic to the fish so therefore it should not be the first line in the treatment. If an infant had an infection, one would not go directly to chemotherapy or radiation to fight the infection. I am not going to continue to give my opinions on here because I think people should make their own based on the information available. Below I provided some links for your and your viewers consideration. bit.ly/2HPxZdH bit.ly/2Bh5eRz

Travis great video, I will say that this hobby in my 14 years It has grown very fast and lots of good, bad and misguided info is out there. I have learned don’t do everything that someone else does unless you see there results. I was Quarantined for years know my lfs I have bought from is doing it for you and he is my go to guy for fish his fish are so healthy. My lfs doesn’t sell the fish till it is done with the quarantine process. My 2 cents is no what your buying, where your buying from and don’t buy on the fly know what to look for in healthy and none healthy fish.
Travis thanks for videos you are doing a great service to people that need the guidance.

Right on, man. It’s about time a popular UA-camr endorses quarantining with such assertiveness. Too many other popular youtubers are completely negligent about this, and lead so many inexperienced hobbyist down an awful path of disease and death for the creatures that we have a responsibility to do our best to preserve the life of.
So tired of the same worn out excuses from these youtubers like “ich is always present” bs... Just plain ignorant, lazy, neglectful, and impatient.

Spot on info Travis, if you don't qt you are playing Russian roulette with your tank, you'll get away with not qt'ing for only so long before you eventually take the bullet. Believe me I know, our 125 gallon is now empty and we are slowly starting all over again because we were too careless with adding coral to our tank, we didn't even know what a vermetid snail was until they had overrun our tank, and they are virtually impossible to get rid of once you have hundreds of them spread everywhere.

You make lots of fair points that I completely agree with in principle. In my case I’m about to get a nano for my apartment. I do not have the space to build a Q setup for fish and coral. If I had my own house, which hopefully one day, I’d have a full Q setup in the basement but until then it’s a hard problem to manage. As a result dips it is. And discussing the LFS quarantine procedure.

Travis I totally agree. Since we take fish into our homes as pets, we should Really strive to make sure their new home (ie our tanks) are disease free (including ich). Its our responsibility since we are dragging them away from wherever they came from.. Though I do get that most people are busy, or don't have the money or space to set up quarantines etc. So my hope is that one day, all the animals are aqua-cultured. That way we can just buy all our fish 100% disease free, and at the same time it has less impact on our oceans etc.

Hey Travis - awesome video. With the changing frag plugs do you change them before putting into the frag tank? Also it would be a cool to see you doing this process as I sure there are different techniques for getting different types of corals off the plugs - especially encrusting or an acro that has encrusted - thanks ;) Legend ;)

To me there is no right or wrong way to do things in this hobby. If you find a way that works for you and your tank, thats what’s right for you. One thing I’ve learned in this hobby is to stop chasing numbers and stop following the leader. If quarantine works for you good if you don’t quarantine and it works for you good, there’s no right or wrong to me. Us as humans don’t take antibiotics before we are sick. If we did eventually the antibiotics wouldn’t work because they will be immune to the bacteria. If you understand that short version Lol.. excellent video from your perspective though. Nice reef too.

I think very few people are going to do this process until they suffer. Unless people like yourself can spread this message across the board. In the freshwater world a guy like Cory with Aquarium Co Op is in a great position to help the next gen truly start with a proper QT and other practices that run on the same tract. I myself had to loose a pair of Frostbite Clowns to slow down and respect the animals and the process so I would succeed in the long run.

I used to believe if I bought all of my fish from LA DD that everything would be fine and I didn't quarantine fish or coral. A wise local reefer and friend finally convinced me otherwise and I started to quarantine everything, fish and coral. Even after extensive quarantine and treatment of fish while my display went fallow for 4 months, I STILL lost some fish I had for multiple years. All because I trusted a fish would be fine. I now quarantine all coral in a fishless tank for 3 months. Overkill? Probably..... But it is the ONLY way to guarantee ich does not get in to my display. All fish are quarantined and observed for at least 30 days. I proactively treat with 2 rounds of Prazipro and Cupramine if any ich is observed. This has served me well. I am coming up on the 1 year mark with my Achilles Tang and that is something not many people can say... IMHO it is more than worth when I see fish that are healthy and they don't HAVE to rely on their immune systems being in top condition to be healthy. Closed systems can quickly build up deadly proportions of parasites. NOT worth it. I will leave you with this. Would it be acceptable for your dog or cat to be consistently sick? Or acceptable to lose 1 or 2 while "learning" how to take care of them?

I always quarantine my fish with copper for 6 weeks, but a question I always wonder: when you transfer the fish from the Quarantine tank to the display, do you do any precaution in case traces of copper follow into the display? I know it could be tiny amount, but with many inverts and corals could be very sensitive to copper in the display in many system, what is your normal practice?

Dude the analogies are great the vid was very well done , totally informative the aquarium keeps looking a little better every time I see it, can’t agree more about Qt ing. Maybe it’s inappropriate maybe not I think reef2reef has a great chart for Qt -meds and fish compatibility, examples chloroquine hypo and prazipro ( my personal preference) copper, tank transfer method etc. I’ve found it has helped me with lowering mortality rates saving heartache and $.

Badass video Travis!!! I just started to quarantine EVERYTHING that goes into my main display. I finally got ick this past summer and it was terrible!! I went no fish for 10 weeks in main display and hyposalinity (1.009) for my fish for 8 weeks. I will never put anything into my main display again without going through quarantine. I was unsure about treating with copper, so decide to not try it. I recently had a clown die after 6 years....water quality had gone down due to a lot of travel and not being home. Would brook survive the hyposalinity??? Should I pull everyone out of my display and treat? Water is back to pristine parameters. Keep up the great work!!!! Love your content!!!

I understand the logistic behind quarantining fish. But how do one run a coral quarantine?
Should it be one frag at a time? Cross contamination through quarantine is as mush a risk as main display contamination.
As to the very sensible nature of some corals, does one need to have another full circuit system for quarantining or could quarantine be achieved in a tank plugged onto the main display waterflow, with proper UV/O3 treatment to prevent sump contamination?
For how long should one quarantine coral/fish? I've read 2 to 4 weeks for fish and up to two months for corals.
Coral quarantine's aim being to remove parasites, should a second dip be done after quarantining and before putting it in the main display?
That's a lot of questions sorry, but I'm drawing a battleplan for a tank as pest-free as possible, and going full on CDC from the start seems to me like the best way to achieve this.

I am having terrible luck with tangs and copper. The minute I introduce a hint of cooper to the water, my tang(s) stop eating and if I continue they always die. I am NOT giving a full dose right away, more like a 1/4 dose and increasing it slowly every 24 hours. I am using Cupramine. Any advice? My setup is overkill for a home setup. I have Qty 15, 20 gallon long tanks. Each fish gets its own tank for ammonia dilution and just time to destress on there own.

Some science and rationale. Not good enough to say I speed and go 60mph in a 30mph zone and never had a problem because I’m a great driver and have 10-20-30 years etc of experience. All well and good until you get in a wreck and hurt yourself and or someone.

Tank is looking amazing dude! And yeah, pop and drop is the motto of a moron. How that is a smart “strategy” is well beyond me. But I guess if you have the money and you don’t care.....there it is.

I don’t know, but do some people just make a living off UA-cam. So they can say and do what they want. They are in one fashion or other being “supported”. Their hobby, their lifestyle etc.
