This instrument blows me away with how much you can do with so little when you do it well. And I love the bits of wisdom you sprinkle in with the lessons. Love yourself first.
I happened to be thinking about this this morning. There's so many videos online. Too much to take in. But a lot of the time they're wonderful inspiration. I certainly don't look every week, but I did watch the Kimbrough video. That kept me going for a couple of weeks. From learning the neuances of the vamp, moving it to a looper, doubling up with a low harp, dropping pitch again, changing the bass line to something similar to what's played on guitar, going back to regular tuning for the lead, making a drum pattern, adding percussion, sharing lead between 2nd and 3rd position and then learning the vocal line. It's beginning to sounds alright. Like Ricci says, the key is in the simplicity. If you can't explain something simply you don't understand it... I can't remember who said that... But I think it's through the limitations of a harmonica that forces creativity. A little can really go a very long way. A producer friend has an enormous studio, I don't think I'm anywhere near doing everything with m 4 track cassette recorder. Thanks for the post.
Jason I am so very grateful to have had you as a teacher over the years. Some how all of the talk about timing in this video I somehow absorbed into my playing from listening to you over the years. I can't count how many times I have marched in time just playing the root notes. 😅 just keep sharing your experience with the world, those that are to faint of heart to handle it will go down a different youtube algorithm. 🤷♂️
This is so on point man. I love your ability to break these subtleties down in away thats immediately practical and never boring. I'd like to share something I learned as a bassist - since time is the topic - I was fortunate enough to attend a couple Victor Wooten master classes- and he gave us this idea - that had an almost magical effect on all of us immediately- I found it helpful as a bassist and I still use this idea when I play solo harmonica. Victor asks for a volunteer- a very brave young cat grabs his bass and heads to the stage, Victor asks him to play any groove he's comfortable with. And the kid does - dudes of course a little nervous but he lays it down - acceptably. But without much vibe - or pulse. So Victor asks him very warmly "great, can you do a basic beatbox" "yeah", "cool, can you beat box for me the beat that was in your head when you played that for me" and the cat couldn't - and he was real about it - "I didnt have a beat in mind" Victor is such a sweetheart. He tells the kid not to sweat it - most of us don't think about it. But so me a favor - hit me with a little of your beatboxing skill" and the kid drops a funk beat. Vic says "dope! Now - keep that beat in your head- and play that bass line for me again"- I was a fairly experienced player at that point - but my chin hit the floor- cause kids groove went from passable to undeniably- just using his imagination. I do practice counting as well- I do it in a grove of trees in park by the river - so know one will hear me count 😉.
Hi Jason. Love your work, love your attitude to life. I'm a 75 year old from Australia and took up the harp 3 months ago. Came accross your UA-cam channel and for me, you are the greatest. I will keep watching and learning. Please let me know if you ever decide to tour "down under" wishing you the very best
The most impactful piece of info I’ve received for harp so far is, “Tone is produced 90% by the player, and 10% the instrument, all the fancy equipment and amps just make it louder.”
Wow ! I would love to just sit down and talk to this cat for an hour. The take away is always more than a harp lesson ! Peace Moon Cat and thanks man !
This was awesome brother! Junior Wells was a big deal for me, thanks for the reminder-totally providential. God bless you, your work, your family, your krew and the rest of your Lords day. Throw the bag of ones… …I need to throw mine off a cliff. Lol SOLI DEO GLORIA (To The Glory Of God Alone) Father, Son & Holy Spirit -Ronnie
For me today, the best part of the lesson was near the end. I needed that today, my bag had filled up with negative BS from people. So, I'm working on mind, body and soul. With that said the timing lesson was also excellent. Carry on Moon Cat and thank you.
Thanks Sir, that was great again. I mean Your thoughts on simplicity. There‘s a crack in everything-that’s where the light gets in. Man You did it the hard way. You had to experience simplicity and letting go in jail. Others might have the opportunity to join a spiritual retreat. Others (like me) dwell as often as the can in nature and stillness away from all the human concepts that rule the city. In every case the same thing may happen: a mind appears, that wants less, that can let go easier, that might manifest in music directly from the essence of your being. Maybe that is also something that You have experienced. In that case I just wanted to tell that You are not alone😊 And by the way: the musical stuff, You taught in this video does help me also a lot. Thanks Jason for being around with us🙏🏻
Completely right. Someone once told me I was trying to find "Balance in Simplicity" which reminds me of what you're talking about here. This is what I loved playing with R.L. Burnside his simple yet brilliant way of playing. It taught me alot of playing simple making the notes count. Very cool your use of timing.
BRO!!! Thank you for that. This lesson really spoke to me. You touched on a lot of things we talked about the other night. I'm going to play around with this idea and see what's cooking in them Appalachian mountain for yea. I like the idea of being the best you that you can be.
Deep water...good breakdown, too! Thankyou! Been on my mind alot lately. But, please, stop giving harp players a bad name. Haha! Seriously, your Free Fridays are great! Keep up your charitble nature. Peace n love, and good timing!! 🥰
Jason Ricci!! Where have you been my whole harmonica life!!! Hahhaa!! Man!!.... your authenticity and ability to teach what you know is darn right inspiring!! I've only found you a short time ago! Your incredible at what you do and I've learnt so much from you!!!! Thanks heaps man!!!!
After watching and more importantly listening to this video I now realise that I’m playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order 😮 Great job sir keep em coming.
Woo hoo, 4am premier - the cricket usually finishes at 3.30am so I'll still be awake listening to the end of the day commentary. Then I can have a little.nap to get ready for ourlesson at 9am (6pm Friday New Orleans time)
Big fan of Clemson football. Bryan Breese will be a rookie with the Saints. Hope he has a great pro career. He has had some tough times lately. Great lesson as always.
Dude. Like you got it going on like no other. An ya know it and IT ALSO BLOWS YOU AWAY😅. Seems like you’re humbled by that fact an ya really get off on sharing your hard earned skills as a player with others. Good on you. Can’t thank you enough for your help. Junior Wells!
Hey Jason I looked online on this subject and couldn't find anything from a pro and not much from punters (hobby players) and that subject is SPIT CONTROL - Pro guys like you never seem to have any trouble with this even when playing over a whole 12 bar or more without stopping hardly - As a beginner/intermediate player I wrestle with it from time to time and would love to know how you pro players manage/deal with it or whether it goes and becomes less of an issue over time as you get better or whether its a question of improving technique - Thank You 😎
WAS a huge issue for me my first couple years especially when I started tongue blocking. Just stopped happening I guess my body just started chilling out. Wish I could say more! ❤️
Thanks Jason yes definitely a link with relaxing/confidence. I think its natures way of saying slow down be patient stop forcing it like on 3 and 4 note interval scale runs across the whole harp lots of swearing and dribble but it gets better - On the tongue block I nearly decided not to bother due to dribble and other issues but I am ok now on 2/5 draw for the end of an ending run and 3/6 blow splits I usually find a simple but relevant lick unlocks the door to most things and encourages me to keep going😀😎❤
Such a Fantastic Lesson... !!! Thanks for continually sharing the craft. Side note, what is the Jazzy, spacey backing track you used at 5:54...it's fire.
Oh Shucks The Big guns Padron! That was a "War Bear" by a small boutique company called Powstainie Let's link up on instagram bro @jasonricci93 for more cigar crazy!
Jason, if you're gonna keep doin' these Free Friday thangs, I might as well resign myself to the fact that I'm gonna wind up reshingling my entire roof all by myself. .....it's hard to find good help these days.

My foot has finally started tapping right. To everything. I think my brain may have needed time to build the connection. But now it works a treat.

Hi J, Awesome lesson! Fast riffs are cool but changing the timing up in unexpected ways can be even more effective. Thank you!
