Thank you so much ☺, I wish I could work more with my bananas now, but they are all wrapped up for the winter now. Good luck with your banana plantation, let me know how you are getting on,
I don't cut mine to the ground. Just a manageable height to wrap. They are currently 12 foot tall and mother plant the tallest. With 3m leaves. I'm in the UK, sw Wales though. So temperature dependent I guess. I am going to divide some (may be too late now). Hence watching your video. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the comment, i don't cut mine down anymore I wrap them each year but they are not as tall as yours. when it comes to dividing, i do that at any time in the year, I am terrible like that, if you take a smaller pup, you can also put it in the house, but as long as you have a good root stock they should be fine. good luck
@jochen.allardice-grein thanks 😊 I'll give it a try. I have a cold greenhouse this year too so might be an option for the smaller ones. Happy growing. 🌴
If your Banana has a lot of pups, sure take some off and distribute them in your garden, as to the Greenhouse, I will eventually get one but it takes some planning and money of course.
@@jochen.allardice-grein I gave two away already, early summer & just pulled three more out today. One is a male I think...not sure what to do with him Lol story of my life.
@@leahstrydom8415 The Male / Female aspect comes with the flower and the Banana production (female flower comes first and the male second), seeing that mine grows in a colder environment it hasn’t flowered, neither have the ones I had before… and it doesn’t make any difference for me since you cannot eat the fruit anyway :-) .. I don't know which Banana you grow, but your pups should still grow on.
I have a Fiskars spade, which would have been too big for this job, but seeing that I love my Fiskars spade, I am buying more of their stuff. However, I have to move some Bamboo soon and I will be using my spade then :-)
Hi Jochen, first of all , thank you so much for your videos, I just saw one growing Canns from seed and this one. I also live in Germany but in the Northern part of Bavaria. Winters can be very cold with minus degrees as low as -15'degress. I was given two small banana plants from a friend who moved from Halle to the North last year. She used to have them in her Strebergarten but I over- wintered them in my cellar last winter with an average temperature of 20 degrees Celsius. Now with Autumn, I am weighing options whether to leave them outside, either in flower pots or planting them in the garden or in the cellar like last year. My question is if over-wintering in the garden, is there a recommended spot in the garden, eg, near the house, North or South side or sheltered or open spot. And what type of materials do I need for insulation the plants. And lastly, how high or low do I need to chop off the trunks( they are just about 70cm tall)? And by the way regarding growing Cannes by seed, would Spring be the best time? I like your humour, keep it👏👏😁
Hi Marco, glad you like the videos, I use to live in Fürstenfeldbruck many years ago, so I know what the winters can be like down there , I am now near Bremen and the winters are much milder here. Still need to yank my canna’s out of the ground and cover my Banana (I am going to post overwintering videos once I am going pull one out and cover the other one over :-) ) I assume that you have a Musa Basjoo too, the Pups I cut off in the video are about 40 cm tall and I am going to leave them in the house this winter so that they can grow on and spring 2021 they will move in the Garden To your questions: With the Basjoo, to top will die back when it gets frost, the thing with bananas is that they are full of water, so a little frost the capillaries burst and the top tart of the plant dies back, the root can withstand -14, but needs to be covered. So if you want a bigger plant for next year I would just put them in a pot (doesn’t need to be too big as Bananas have small root system and keep them in the house, where they get light. If you want to keep them in the Garden, plant them and cut them off about 10 cm above the ground and cover is with compost than mulch and to complete the look with Tannenzweige (Christmas tree branches). I tried it before with building a wigwam around them, insulate them with Straw and all sorts of stuff, but when I unveiled them the following year they were rotten. Perhaps I try it both ways this year, I think about it. If you want to try it, build a wigwam cut off all the leaves and the top of the stem, spray the crap out of it with Anti-fungal spray, a shit load of straw and a breathable but waterproof membrane around the construction. For the Canna, I would start them off in February (In the house) plant the seeds, I put the planting tray on top of the radiator (my wife loves me for that) and with the heat they germinate quickly. Once they are bigger put them into bigger pots and out in the garden they go when there is no more frost. I’ll be doing that again next year, although I have to get myself a different canna variety at some point. I hope this very LONG reply helped :-)) … Gruß Jochen
@@marcototo8285 ah okay I assumed in my book length reply 🤣 that you had a basjoo, but it seems that you have a cabendish, they are not hardy at all they need to come into the house, the good thing about them is that they can grow nice bananas you can actually eat. So no wigwam building for you, into the house the Bananas move 😄😉
Thank you so much for answering in full details Jochen! I will carry out your advice and let you know of the results in early Summer 2021. Herzliche Grüße.
You can do it now, I filmed the video on Saturday 22nd, and I am in northern Germany, so we have more or less the same weather, but I am keeping the separated ones indoors for the winter, to give them a good start. Next year they are going out and will be cut and covered like I do it with the rest of my Bananas. Hope this helps.
Fascinating that a German is doing a northern English accent. That's a trowel, by the way.
Thank you😀
Excellent video. Detailed pics, good advice. Now to go out and make my one plant into a banana plantation.

Ah, okay! Thank you! Dwarf Cavendish is the variety I have.
@@jochen.allardice-grein Maybe you could build your own greenhouse. Would be a lot cheaper & you seem to be pretty handy :D
