    I’ve mostly seen the first and sometimes second versions of these builds and I say keep remaking them! It’s enjoyable to see someone approach a project they’ve done before, refine it, use new tools, etc. I am much more likely to watch a new version of a project that’s been done before than to go back and watch one from years earlier, for what it’s worth.

    In the bottle there is no place for the moisture to go, and the preasure is at atmospheric levels, in a vacuum, you will actually accelerate the moisture drop in the glue as water evaporates extremely fast at room temperature in a vacuum, you can boil water at room temperature in a vacuum, and you also have the dry wood that will suck the moisture.

  • @stephenmcgeown

    The glue is absorbed into the fibers and grains of the wood where it eventually cures. In a bottle, the glue can't absorb into plastic or silicone, so it remains uncured.

    1:56 Merry Christmas to you and yours. From the podcast with the boys to your books to your ever fresh rethinking of your approach to your videos, i've been an avid fan / customer / consumer for many years - especially the LOLs. Firstly, thank you. Secondly, and far less interestingly, I have an Adobe Illustrator question. You appear to use Shape Builder to ‘blend’ two circles, and for the life of me, I couldn’t recreate the technique. Any tips?

    I actually have a tray that my wife’s grandmother asked me to fix because it was missing trim and had veneer chips out on a handle. I fixed the veneer, remade all the trim to match, but ran into a problem as I tried to poly over everything. The surface of the tray has a hand painted spray of flowers that spread from the left bottom to top middle. Sadly, it separated and I never got it finished before she passed about 10 months after I had started it. I still would love to finish it, but I can’t find images from trays made back in the 40’s (if I remember correctly). Ever had an issue like this? I am afraid to remove the poly over the paint because the flowers will go with it. I don’t have the skill to remake them.

    It dries in the vacuum press because of the thinness of the glue and the air in the wood.

    Love love your videos!!!! I think i've seen them all lol. So when I was watching you with the insert it popped in my head i wonder what would happen if you took the walnut colored cutouts and layed a full sheet of thin veneer, laid it over just the walnut colored cutouts and put it in the vacuum sealer. Do you think it would show an impression of the cutout pieces after. It would be awesome if it did. I don't know if this makes sense or not the way I typed it out.

    For anyone who cares, wood glue doesn't cure, it dries.
    Curing means there is a chemical reaction happening when different compounds are exposed to each other. This is what happens with epoxy (the reacting compounds are split into the two parts you mix together to activate it) or something like linseed oil (which reacts with oxygen in the air) the reaction results in different compounds making up the "cured" product. Linseed oil will not cure in a vacuum, but epoxy will (since all of the compound it needs are supplied in the 2-part mixture).
    PVA wood glue, on the other hand, dries. It doesn't cure. As the term implies, that means it literally evaporates out it's solvent (PVA's solvent is just water). The solvent evaporates out with or without air. In fact, evaporation/drying can happen even faster in a vacuum than in air, so long as the evaporated solvent can escape (in this case, that happens every time the pump runs to maintain the vacuum). Chemical reactions can also occur between the compounds suspended within "drying" adhesives, too, but they first have to lose enough solvent for the reaction to happen. This is why you can't readily redissolve some waterproof PVA glues (like Titebond III).
    When eood glue is in s properly closed bottle or one witht he nozzle clogged) only so much solvent can evaporate from the glue into the air inside the bottle until the air becomes saturated with the solvent (in this case, water vapor in the air). At that point the glue in the bottle is stable and won't dry out.

  • @HungLikeScrat
    @HungLikeScrat 2 дні тому

    I would assume wood glue dries under vacuum for the same reason water boils at a lower temp under vacuum.
    Is it possible the saw blades are now made in China with cheaper materials?
    Merry Christmas, David and family!
