If only this talking machine could talk. Looks like the work of a knowledgeable enthusiast to re case the parts, taking the trouble to make it technically as correct as possible & look good too! Not sure what happened to the 'bell' of the internal horn, but think if you connected what remains, the box would make a decent tone chamber. I'd keep it as a collectors item, it's definitely unique!
Hi! Yes this appears to be a home made gramophone with the sound arm, sound box, needle tin, escutcheon and brake from Decca 50. I trust Decca had Gerrard motor too. The rest is probably from other machines. I am not sure about the platter, and the internal horn which are not visible in the video but the speed regulator and winding key is not from Decca 50. Still it’s an interesting piece which salvaged precious components of Decca 50
Yes, they have a smaller bore than even the standard HMV/Victor type. I do have one of these soundboxes with the HMV logo on the front, so presumably, a Columbia style portable was sold under the HMV name at some point after the EMI merger 🤔. Thanks 😀 👍
Definitely a bargain for five pounds! If it were mine, I'd keep it as it is, since clearly it was someone's individual piece of art. Maybe just service the motor and smarten the machine up a bit?
It's certainly an issue. What I'm doing now is test uploading any records I'm planning on using to check if they have any issues. Most are fine, but the occasional one gets flagged up! Thanks 😀 👍
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try fitting the horn back to see how much of a difference it makes. I may try another soundbox, too. I did buy it for parts, but maybe I will keep it after all 🤔. Thanks 😀 👍
Hello again nice interesting Gramophone for £5 you can't go wrong, early this year i brought a nice portable for £5 it was called Celebrity portable the only thing wrong with it was one of the hinges was broken i at first thought there was no winder but luckily it was in the record compartment on the Gramophone, Thankyou again you always come back with some interesting items. 🤠🤠🤠
@Kevin-yi8fd Thanks 😀 👍. It is amazing what can sometimes be bought for very little money! At £5, it would have been worth it for the soundbox, but what I really wanted was the motor. Glad to hear you picked up an interesting machine too. 😀
I genuinely think for £5 you got a bargain there. It may not be to your visual taste or suit a purist, but I can imagine that was giving the previous owner pleasure as it played.
@GrandadIsAnOldMan Yes, it was a good buy and much cheaper than I expected. It has been quite neatly put together, though I think the transfers and especially the varnish were done later as it has clearly been varnished after being fully assembled. I will probably break it up for parts as I have another machine that could use the motor, but I will keep the box as I could use it for a project gramophone in the future. Thanks 😀 👍
Well I knew it was going to work at the beginning of your vid……. Not because I think you’re a genius but because I could read what the previous comment says 😳😂 Oh ok then, go on I’ll say it……. ‘You’re a genius’ 😂👏
@radiogramgramophonetoons5802 Thanks 😀👍. Sometimes, when the price is right, I buy first and worry about the motor second. I own at least 3 machines I can think of that I have either never wound or don't wind, but I have never looked at the motor! 😅
All the mechanics except from the soundbox seem to have come from a Decca 50 portable gramophone. The casing is DIY, so overall it is a unique machine and doesn't have a name. Thanks 😀 👍

Thanks 😀 👍. Yes, it seems to be mainly Decca 50. The only bits I think aren't are the soundbox and winding handle 😀
Worth £5 for the Columbia 15a soundbox. These are superb. Pity they don't fit anything but Columbias.

A unique piece, I must say. Also a good purchase for a small price. Truly a wonderful addition to your collection. Well done.
Thanks 😀 👍

Thanks 😀 👍. I'll do a few more videos on it. I really wasn't planning on keeping it together, but it may be worth saving as it is a bit different 🤔
I think it's super cute! Seems to sound alright through the camera too. Maybe keep it as is for a piece of folk art? :)
It may yet get a reprieve! 😅 I'll probably play a few more records on it and see how much difference the internal horn makes. Thanks 😀 👍
Better be careful with that music ! You know how these You Tube copyright people are !! 😂

It would be nice to hear it with the horn in, bit of a shame to use it for parts as its unique🤔

Really nice video, i'm happy that you got it working.

It certainly looks interesting and somebodies special project 😊😊👍👍

What's the name of this player?
