For those who don't iron or steam, throw your item into the dryer with a clean wet wash cloth (wring it out, not soaking wet) and tumble on medium heat for ten minutes while you put on your makeup or fix your hair. The item will come out of the dryer nice and wrinkle free.

Long story short, folding laundry is my least favorite chore, and I had a mountain of it on my bed for 3 days. I put on your video to help me get through the task enjoyably. Well, I removed 2 chunky sweaters I don't wear, off the top shelf to make room for pants I do wear, and didn't fit on the bottom shelf. Not only did you provide me with company, but you made me think of a solution to remove friction! Completing the task took a little longer than your video, but I also decluttered a few items of clothing so it would fit better in my drawers as well. So glad it's done!
Another thing I did to remove friction a while back was to keep a cotton weave basket filled with pajamas in the bathroom. It removes friction from showering in the evening. Years ago, I paired down my wardrobe so I'd have enough space to keep it all in the closet and dresser, no more shuffling off-season clothing. Thanks for reminding me that little details can make a big difference!

    Sabine here, from Germany.

I found you a few weeks ago and since then I'm slowly getting my life back.

    How motivating YOU are! 😍
You made me install a command center in the kitchen (former worst cluttering space), decluttering my closet, my drawers, my bathroom and I'm totally happy with every little step.

You have helped me so much. I thought I was organized before. Like I have always had a home binder with important info. But now that I'm "really" decluttering, WOW! so surprised by all the crap that I don't want and don't use. So much time wasted cleaning and organizing the "friction".
Yesterday I went thru my sewing stuff and threw out about 100 bent straight pins. Silly, but gosh it felt good.
My next road block will take quite some time. My life has been so busy taking in every stray I could. All of our animals are rescues. 30 of them. My living room looks like a pet store. Various small birds, two parrots, three rats, two guinea pigs, 6 mice, 3 pitt bulls, two cats, a massive aquarium, and a tortoise, I spend hours a day cleaning and caring for them. But one day most of them will be gone and life will be calmer.

It’s amazing what can cause kids to be late in the morning. If my kids go up to get ready at the same time, it takes a minimum of 2x as long as it does if they go get ready separately. Together, they either get into an argument over the bathroom, or they start playing together and forget they were supposed to be getting ready. 😅

We have been remodeling part of our home and everything is everywhere in our usually very tidy home. My husband and daughter are finally realizing that having a place for everything, in a tidy home, is actually more relaxing, welcoming, and conducive to a happy home environment.
Searching for every day items is annoying, makes you late, and starts your day off in a negative mindset.
Thank goodness the remodel is almost done and we can once again enjoy our home.

I am pretty organized in most areas. However, my craft room is such a hot mess! Filled with WAAAY too much stuff. So over-whelming! Yesterday I used the 3 second rule to declutter. At first, I thought it was scary to make such fast decisions, but I soon realized how great and freeing it was! Letting go can be wonderful! I asked myself in those three seconds - Do I love it? Does I use it? Does it bring me joy? I worked for an hour and it was amazing! Going to do it again today, tomorrow, every day until it’s done! I think I will actually craft more when I can my find things and when my space looks beautiful and that brings me joy. Thanks Cass!

Love this! So true! Your mention of just getting rid of 25% of clothes (or whatever category) is so inspiring - just DO it - has me thinking about how hanging on to havign those extra options of FOUR blouses to choose from instead of THREE is SUCH a burden, big-picture, vs the much smaller pleasure of having the extra option of that one additional cute top on a particular day. And specifically your comments about hanging things and laundry, sooo true!

It can equally be helpful to deliberately add friction between you and bad habits that you're trying to break.
So for instance if you're trying to reduce your phone use, have your phone have its resting spot not within easy reach. Or if you're trying to not snack in the evening, clean and floss your teeth after dinner, so when you consider having a snack your laziness will be put off having to do your teeth again.

I have a great one for this! If you have ever worked in food service (especially a fast food chain like mcdonalds, starbucks, whatever) there were probably little laminated signs all over the employee-only areas. There's one above the sink explaining how to wash your hands, one above the food prep area with the proper temperatures everything needs to be heated/cooled to or the recipe for the newest menu item, maybe a cleaning schedule in the bathroom with a little check box for each step in the cleaning process. I'm not saying to plaster every wall in your home with ugly visuals and checklists, but if there are one or two things you are really trying to work on, maybe temporarily put it where you would actually do that thing until you have established the habit. Having to remember, or look up the steps to something, or remind other people in your household what they're supposed to do every single time is a huge waste of time and energy any major point of friction. This is why food service places are covered in signs: it's way more efficient to outsource that brain power to a sign that you only have to think about making once. If you have kids, or if you really struggle with maintaining habits (hi, fellow ADHDers!) you can consider making a prettier version once you figure out what works so that you can leave it up long term. For instance, my sister is a teacher and has a small photo of each area of her classroom (and her own kid's rooms at home, lol), which she hangs on the wall in that area so the kids know what it's supposed to look like when it's clean.
Other examples are step-by-step visual instructions for brushing teeth or morning/bed time routines hung on the wall or the mirror in the bathroom (if you want, use a laminated sheet or free-standing picture frame that you can stash in a drawer when guests come). Or writing your physical therapy or workout regimen in sharpie on your yoga mat so you don't have to remember/look up what to do each time. Then leave your yoga mat in a place where you will see it at a time of day when you are most likely to have time to do it.
BUT just like she says in the video, if there's too much clutter, it's not going to be effective. If there's stuff all over the walls or counters, you won't notice these reminders, so definitely take care of that, too. 🙂

Since I started watching your videos, I started keeping a box on each floor and in my closet for donations. It's easier to toss one thing in the box, so we dont have to wait for a de-cluttering project to go through things. My kids are even using them! De-cluttering can be hacked the same way as cleaning! When you get dressed and try stuff on, toss it if it doesnt fit! Dont wait for Saturday! This is HUGE for me

I figured out a solution to a friction point while listening to this and doing dishes!! So the very small recycling bin in home gets full and I dread emptying it. It gets so full that i open the cupboard door and I can barely shove a new item in without it ALL falling out. Why can't i just empty it more often! The friction is that in my home i have one bin for all recycling yet when i need to empty it to the outdoor spot, there are actually a milion categories there (hard plastic is curbside recycling, glass goes to the bottle depo, plastic bags go to a different location etc) so when i bring my unsorted bin over there i have to sort it all. At this point i dont like touching each item. So my solution is to have dividers with the categories for each recycleable in my home so when i go outside its quick and i can dump each container and no sorting 😅🎉❤

Even though I had organized my clothes, I still needed to press them. Most of this meant touching up the hems on slacks or other areas. I kept the ironing board and iron at the end of my bed. Then, when I came in to get dressed, I turned on the iron, picked out my clothes, and the iron was ready. It was no different than turning on the curling iron while I was in the shower (if that's your thing). If I have to choose between dishes and laundry, I choose laundry. Throw a load in that will run by itself, then start the dishes. The dishes will air dry while the laundry is folded and put away. I fold and hang up things because folding means it takes up less space. With kids, their backpacks go next to their chair at the kitchen table. My things would go in my chair in the family room, especially on shopping day because of things to return and drop off (dry cleaners). The kitchen counter belonged to Dad, so it had to be clear after dinner. Staging the cleaning supplies the night before might mean washing the cleaning rags the night before or emptying the vacuum cleaner bag, but at least your tools were ready for work.
My big problem is deciding how to arrange my medicine chest. For 20 years, the 3 doors were his hers and ours. Now it's just me. I guess I just need to do it.

I love the idea of a clutter caddy. I’m going to try this now. My kitchen is always clean and decluttered. No other room has been thoroughly decluttered so I’m going to try it with the clutter caddy. Great friction video, lol. Thanks Cas.

I don't vacuum as much as I should. My cat is terrified of the vacuum cleaner so I bought a white wooden children's toy box that is the exact size of the box the vacuum came in to keep it out of sight. Lately I have started to put things on top of the toy box so I am vacuuming even less. My task for tomorrow is to remove the friction items off the top of the box!

    • @clairep7199

Obviously it differs between individuals but I find it a lot easier to meal plan and cook when I have less inventory on hand. I shop weekly (ish) and by the end of the week my fridge freezer and pantry look pretty empty...then I look at what's left and menu plan to use that stuff up so it never goes out of date. Something to consider...

I have decluttered little by little. I even shredded my papers that I no longer needed. Thank goodness my child also donated and shreds. However my husband is a hoarder!! Every room in our home expect our child's room is cluttered with his stuff. Not only does the clutter in my home bother me but it's his belongings are never used!! It's drives me bananas, coming home every day from work to see that clutter!! For me, living in a cluttered home, I can never find anything and we can't have guests over because there is no where for them to sit because of my husband's clutter!! 🤦😒

This is exactly why I don’t ever even consider dating again. I refuse to let anyone into my life again until I get my life under control as a hoarder and figure out how to declutter. That’s why I’m here to get motivation and learn. I hate living like this. No one in my area does counseling for this. There is more behind this mentally than people realize. He needs help. I’m so sorry for you having to live with this as you are not a hoarder. He needs to figure out what caused him to do this in the first place and get help for his disorder. First though he needs to admit he has a problem. Even doing 15 minutes a day for me has been difficult to do. I haven’t given up hope that I can do it though. I want to live normally again. It causes so much friction in my life. I have no peace.

Oh my gosh, my dog gets into the garbage too. We can’t even have a bathroom garbage. That’s irritating. We have to throw everything away in one central place in the kitchen. It’s a can that not only has a lid, but also has a brick in the bottom under the liner so she can’t tip it over, and it now is behind a gate as well because she watched how it opened automatically when we put our hand over it. She soon learned she could put nose over it and it would open for her. Even putting it under the sink in a locked cabinet didn’t work, because she clawed at the cabinet until she got it open. She originally came from an animal hoarding situation where she had to scrap to get food. It’s so ironic that I have her. She’s so smart that if I have to open the gate for any reason, I block her from even seeing me do that. She watches and learns. It sits down one step down from the kitchen so we can reach over the gate to throw stuff away. I don’t have time or the knowledge to train her, or the money to send her to training, but it definitely an extra step to go throw everything away in one spot.

My house keeps throwing me curves. I'm trying to declutter and organize. I'm doing rooms and parts of rooms as time allows. BUT this house keeps throwing obstacles, like hot water heater busting, the water pipes in ceiling busting, just after the previous disaster was resolved. At this point my entire down down stairs is gutted to the studs. Which I see the positive side as help in decluttering. But that drives my crazy. TOO MANY STAGES OF DISASTER. I know there will be an end at some point.

I have a veg garden and like to put 2 types of liquid fertiliser on it each week and peletised manure less often. The friction is getting all the stuff together that i need from under our house. I heard a gardener suggest getting a metal bin and keeping everything you need right beside the garden so i can go from watering the garden to fertilising it very easily. The garden gets attended to more regularly and things therefore grow healthier.

Socks, shoes and sweatshirts by the front door instead of in my kids room was a life upgrade for us. Less stress (friction) and yelling in the morning. Also a Roomba has changed my life. It's helped me keep up with the dog hair which was also a huge stressor.

Part 2, in my defense, im a caretaker... but i was a housekeeper first.. do lots of cleanouts.. so instead of sorting thru on site, i was packing it all up in a quick swoop and just taking it to my CASTLE! moral of the story : be ruthless when " scavenging " thru odds and ends.. dont take sumting just cuz you always wanted that item. Ask yourself " is this going to bring me and my family JOY ??

Still dealing with some chaos and extra stuff, progressing little by little, hoping I can have a minimalist home someday, because I know it could work wonders for my brain (ADHD, anxiety and burnout) I find it hard to find motivation and build the habit of decluttering (as with any habit), but I'm slowly trying to get back on track with that.
Sadly, there's some stuff that's not mine that I cannot get rid of, and is taking up a lot of space, but the only thing I can do is wait till my sis takes it all out my house, cuz it's her's, but she's not living with me... That extra stuff stuck here makes me mad, but I cannot do anything about it
