The Dialectic of Enlightenment opens with these sentences: “Enlightenment…has always aimed at liberating human beings from fear and installing them as masters. Yet the wholly enlightened earth is radiant with triumphant calamity.” Written in 1944, the idea that Enlightenment had become calamity could be taken as literal. Today “triumphant calamity” is literal once more: human induced climate change has led from the civilization-supporting ecological harmonies of the Holocene to the growing devastations - floods, heatwaves, droughts, fires, storms, ocean acidification, increasing species extinction, ecocide produced ecological collapse - of the Anthropocene. Adorno’s Critical Theory and Ecofeminism offer deeply analogous genealogies and diagnoses of this time of slow-moving ecological disaster.
