From a MUFC Fan: Even though Manchester United and Liverpool supporters talk about trophies and success back and forth, both clubs had terrible tragedies. MUFC with the 1958 Munich Air Disaster LFC with Hillsborough RIP and Justice for the 96.
i was 7 when hillsborough happind, i remember going into liverpool city centre with my brother, then we got home to my grandmothers by liverpool city centre, and remember walking into my nans and everone was crying, my brother had a ticket but he sold it because my mum and dad wouldnt let him go because he was too young to go on his own, god bless the 96, gone but never forgotton, justice YOULL NEVER WALK ALONE
I think you're right. The Police seemed to have an attitude that all Liverpool fans were there to cause trouble. However, apparently the year earlier, the "tunnel" was closed, diverting fans to the corner pens. A very, very sad day that's still difficult to comprehend even today.
The commentator is Graeme Beecroft. He is also talking to Kevin Keatings who was at Villa Park for the Everton Norwich game. I have spoken to many Notts Forest fans about this game and they still don't like to talk about what they saw and have always been supportive. Same is said for Everton, Arsenal and Man Utd!
Every time I see anything about hillsborough it gives me cold chills.I was only 8 at the time but I remember that day vividly as sadly the numbers rose from 21 t0 56 and eventually 95 lives lost.Eventually of course 96 lives were unnecessarily lost.I feel so sorry for all the families and friends of the loved ones who lost their lives at a football match. It never should have happened.I'm a Manchester United fan but a tragedy like this transcends football allegiance.R.I.P to the 96.
This is one of the most chaotic things that has ever occured in English football. Even though 2 decades have passed, it has never stopped disturbing fans like myself.
I live not far from Hillsborough and have been in the Leppings Lane end of the stadium when I went to watch Forest away at Wednesday. Some of the fans I was with were there on that day and were in tears. It was horrible to think that people died in that stand that I was standing in
There had been problems at the leppings lane end at the 3 previous semi finals and it was only the quick thinking of the police in 1981 that prevented deaths and it was a clued up police commander in 87 and 88 that prevented major problems even though the fans who were at that end reported crushing problems. So what do South Yorkshire police do in 89?? They give the overall control of the game to someone who hadn’t even been to the ground for 10 years!! Unbelievable!! The Liverpool fans were heroes that day. And I’m a United fan. Some things are bigger than who we support.
I was in that crush and there were no "pissed 3000" as you stated and if you were in the Forest end how the hell could you see what was going on outside the Leppings end? My life was saved by people I don't know and who didn't stick around for thanks but moved on to try and help others. I went on to try my best to help people (I'd recently qualified on First Aid). If you were there and I don't believe you were, what did you do - cause problems by screaming abuse at the Liverpool fans?
@CityGent88 As a liverpool fan, I am very sorry for the 56 fans who died at Bradford! I feel truly soory for any football fans who die at afootballing disaster. RIP to both sets of fans!
@bigadda1969 I understand what you're saying mate but dont be too hard. When fans first started spilling on to the pitch, nobody knew exactly what was going on. The commentator here is Graham Beecroft who used to work for Radio Merseyside and Radio City. He loves scousers, commentated on both Liverpool & Everton games in the 80s & has no axe to grind with football fans on merseyside. He lost two of his friends in this disaster too, although at the time of his commentary, he was unaware of this.
@CityGent88 With regards to Hillsborough the thing was the POLICE were to blame, they allowed fans into an already over crowded pen.....Bradford fans who died that day RIP
You are from the Uk also! I think we have a pretty good eye for estimating crowd sizes! After 13 years in the Trent End at Forest it is pretty easy to know how many people are in the ground and judgeing numbers!
Ah, I misread your comment. Yeah, every ground at that point was possibly unsafe, just look at Bradford and Hillsborough, it only took stuff like this to make people realise
@xxShaunx7 I don't like to imagine what would have happened if he had scored. Considering there were too many people on the upper tier as well, there would have been tons of fans falling off adding to the crush.
I hate the sad people who are like oh bless you Liverpool never walk alone! It's not to do with football it's NOT FOOTBALL it's a stadium disaster. I can't imagine the families listening to this and how they must have been crying in worry
@TheFatweegee having listened to that, and obviously aware of what has been understood and accepted in the years since, I thought Graham Beecroft was exceptional in his judgement of what was going on. I would like to know what BBC TV were saying as he quite clearly refuted their claims.
@mrtoptenatten Perhaps the taylor report was wrong. In all probability this week will see the publication of the cabinet docs. Multiple times across media, govt committees and across court inquests it has been proved that fans were not to blame. It was inept police action and crowd management and today all stadia in UK is all seater as a result .From your tone, I can only pity you, does not matter which team you support but as a human being you have a soul missing. Justice for The 96.
This is so sad I’ve only heard about it this year I asked my mum about it and she said you could tell who was the ones dying because they were turning blue and she said the newspaper stopped printing it because it was too sad
We're coming up on the 23rd anniversary of this tragedy, which coincides with the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. Just a bad day all around :-(
@CityGent88 that's a lie, your disaster gets a mention just as much as hillsboorugh, and in the end it doesn't matter, they are both tragic, R.I.P to both sets of people who died in the disaster.
@mrtoptenatten "you lot brought this one one your selves". That's a joke of a statement. Many of the people who were killed were at the front of the terrace near the barrier - i.e. were valid ticket-holders. And that includes kids.
That'd only affect the innocent Wednesday fans. It's the FA who should have checked the certificate, and the police who compounded the problems. And why bring Rangers into it?
You've got to remember this was a time when there was a lot of trouble with people getting drunk and getting on the pitch. I'm a Liverpool fan and my dad was at Hillsborough so don't think for a minute I'm trying to be disrespectful but in 1989 when fans came onto the pitch 99% of the time it was because they were drunk and were looking for trouble.
@CityGent88 AMEN BROTHER!!!! ALSO WHAT ABOUT THE RANGERS FANS WHO DIED IN THE 70'S & ALL THE AFRICAN & LATIN AMERICAN FANS WHO DIED IN DISASTERS. OH RIGHT I FORGOT... THEY DON'T MATTER CUZ' THEIR NOT RED & SCOUSE. R.I.P. TO ANY & ALL FANS WHO PERISHED AT ANY TIME WHILE JUST TRYING TO WATCH THE BEAUTIFUL GAME!
Sadly this was a terrible event in LIVERPOOL'S great history, not only for those unfortunate people who lost their lives but also it left a terrible mark on the Club and in my opinion one which LIVERPOOL NEVER got over as the club were never as great as their illustrious history prior, God willing the Club will go on to greatness as it is a great club with terrific fans.
But his closing comments he was saying what he saw and he got off his ass and found out what was going on by asking people around him don't hate him doing his job and doing it well
starryian007 If you go to a nightspot then you do not have to but a ticket before you go! If you go to a Football match as an away fan then you have to buy a ticket to gain access! That is the difference! Duty of care? I am a cop and my duty of care would have been towards those in the ground!!!!!
to get proper and true justice, a good many people would have to be brought in.... the man who designed the stadium, the police, the liverpool supporters themselves. it was such a combination of so many people doing things wrong that caused it. a lot of people simply want to blame the police 100%, which is completely ridiculous.
@wembley05 the fans didnt now the stands were completely packed, you open a gate there obiviously going to go forward and keep going they dodn't do it on purpose
RIP to the innocent! No mercy for 3000 Liverpool fans who turned up pissed and forced the gates! The ground and the Cops have been blaimed but how about the FANS?
No proof eh? I was at the game in the Forest end! I saw the pissed 3000 and things got ugly outside the Leppings lane end before the game! You are the one who is making the statement without proof not I !
Hardly brilliant from Beeky quite distasteful and tabloid like, listen to the opening comments fans being worse for wear by drink, to many fans with forged tickets, what will it look like to the rest of Europe. Basically blaming the actions of the fans before he knew the real reason, never really liked or forgave him for such ineptitude.
A fair comment. But I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to him about his coverage and he admits that alcohol was his first thought (understandable I think). But, if you listen to the whole recording, he never mentions drink again. It soon became apparent to him that there was something much worse happening. To cover an event, of this magnitude, off the cuff - when you expected just to cover a football game takes some doing! Plus he soon became aware that it was turning into a tragedy - he had to consider families at home listening for updates. A nightmare job!
Graham Beecroft later found out after his commentary that day that two of his friends were killed in this disaster. His opening comments may have been inaccurate to start with but at least he went out of his way to find out the truth while it was happening and rectify any negative shit that was being said about Liverpool fans..........unlike BBC television and the rest of the media. He has no axe to grind as far as the people of Liverpool are concerned, he regularly commentated on Liverpool and Everton back in the day and is still an active football journalist on merseyside, so if there's anyone out there who wants to have a go at him, clearly dont know what they're talking about. JFT96!!!!!!!!!!
Leave it out C M, he didn't know! You see something like that unfolding live right in front of your peepers, would you know exactly what to say? I doubt it very seriously! And there's a huge difference between one initial comment on the day, and lying about it for over 20 years as the police did!!!
An honest reporter is willing to change his view. His view going into this was arguably true. English clubs had been banned from European Competition for a number of years before for hooliganism. As soon as he knew the apparent facts, he reported them. Just like you would expect.
With all due respect (RIP), it would be incredibly unjust to prosecute any policeman involved in the disaster. Clearly, they were incompetent, but the vast vast majority of professions where incompetence occurs do not result in deaths. A horrific event like this was inevitable due to how stadia in Britain were constructed, not to mention the huge metal gates that penned fans in.
The pens filled up within 3-4 minutes of kickoff! Yes the gate was opened by Police but the fanns charged in like mad bulls! I know what I saw! You can make any excuse you wan't but it is still 33% equally to blame for Liverpool fans, Police and the ground! I am fed up with the fans taking no responsibility!
novadrian That ain’t racist what the hells he said, just figuratively describing what’s gone wrong over radio. People need to stop throwing the race card around so easily, especially in a situation like this aswell.

Why is it stupid?? It was the police’s fault
