  • A quick look at my recently restored Grundig Konzertschrank 9068 console radio from 1958. I am the 2nd owner. Includes original receipts from purchase in Germany. I personally updated electronics. Replacing capacitors and tubes; fixing the tweeters. Will be working on the turntable soon.

Hi great job on the rebuild! We just picked up a 1957 Grundig same as yours. You wouldn’t happen to have a list of the capacitors and the values you used ?? Definitely need to recap it. Just hums. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing. I just picked up a 9068. Mine is the same as yours with the bar. I'm only missing the right side mirror and unfortunately a couple of the plastic glass holder arms are broken but I have the smoked glass bottom sheet intact. My turntable works mechanically and seems to be running at close to speed but there is a lot of distortion so I'll have to look inside and trace that problem. The radio sounds beautiful, nothing like tube sound. My cabinet needs some work and I am researching how best to restore it. I don't want to mess too much with the original patina. After that I will check the guts.

At a minimum you will want to replace the large electrolytic capacitor. As you saw, I replaced all capacitors in mine. It sounded much better after doing so. Your TT also has a large capacitor in it (assuming it is like mine, a PE Rex Deluxe). Replacing that might clear up your problem. Lubing it correctly and cleaning all connections may also help. I am working on my TT now.

Darrell Keim Good advice, I have been doing research on the caps. I took a cursory look at the caps and none seem to be paper, which seem, from my reading, to be the problematic ones (maybe they got replaced, any advice on what to look for?) but I just got the unit Saturday. I'll check them properly after I get the cabinet done. Waiting for the schematics to be found by the previous owner. As far as the turntable, it is the PE Rex Deluxe. I didn't know about the TT cap so thanks for that tip. I'll have to look for that extra speaker, it's very cool. Thanks again for poting and the advice.

Toosarcastic You may be able to find the schematics online. Your unit has about 45 capacitors. About 5 electrolytic. The other are split about 50 50 into polystyrene (the schematic calls it styraflex) and paper. All three types have a tendency to go bad, tho paper are the worst.

For the record, I just figured out an EASY way to feed in auxiliary devices. Use the tape recorder in jack on the back! Its the one that looks like an XLR plug on the back. I had to make my own cord. Wire on the left is the signal. Center and right wires are ground/negative. Bad news is: I couldn't find an existing modern XLR plug of the correct size. I DID find an old part that fit. Good luck!

Hi Darrell, could you direct me to where you found that old part that fits?

Very nice. I have the Grundig Majestic 8090 WF/3D, (1956) USA model, which uses the same cabinet, with the turntable on the right side and record rack on the left. It is monaural. Also fully restored. See my video by searching "grundig 8090". I wish I had the cover. You might be the only one with a cover for that cabinet. Very nice find. Love the mirrored bar.

I'll bet that is a nice sounding console. I believe the "Majestic" label means it was made for North America. Is yours labeled in English or german?

English. It is, indeed, the export model.

Grund Funken If you ever get the chance to buy the extra speaker like I have in this video, take it. Greatly improves the sound. My unit changes the crossover when you plug it in. Very worthwhile for improved imaging.

    So nice.
recently have come across a similar Grundig Majestic console. I believe it's a musikschrank M72. Currently the only thing that actually works are the lights. I would love to refurbish it and get it to be working again but am not sure what the requirements are and the cost associated with it. The rest of the condition is pretty good. Do you think you can help me understand what I’m looking at? Thanks.

I can try. The first thing to do is find the schematic. You can probably find it online.

I love the speed the turntable plays I think the American turntable plays too fast all except for Magnavox the only two that plays at the exact speed
