Cheap And cheerful decorative weights by using smooth stones found outdoors. You can embellish with acrylic paints to decorate or cover with fancy napkins and glue. One of a kind and great gifts 🌻
Thank you for this video. I bought washers and was meditating on how to cover them. this is what I do when I can't sleep, think of how to do things. I especially like the yoyo ones. I don't have Grandma's buttons, but I could make some covered buttons to match.
This is your first video I have watched but it will not be my last. I am going to your channel next to see what other videos you have. I really appreciate the yo-to design with the buttons and you sure are blessed to have all those buttons from your Grandmother. Thank you for sharing the multiple ideas for the weights. I am just getting into sewing soon as I get my room done and I have only used pins I like the weight idea.
I was looking for instructions on making these fabric weights and your tutorial is wonderful; the best I’ve seen! You have such simple, down to earth instructions. I love the way you researched the sizes, pricing and gave a simple way to cut a circle! Love the covered weights with the buttons on top! I collect buttons and am going to love getting a chance to use some of them! I’m so glad I found your videos; I’m excited that I’ve subscribed! Thanks so much!
Easier way to make the circle pattern: lay your folded paper flat on your work surface. Put a pin through one of the holes in the center of your ruler and then sink the pin tip into the corner of the folded paper. Put your pencil tip in a hole three inches away from the pin and holding the pin, strike an arc by sweeping the pencil and ruler around the pin as the pivot point like a compass. This will give you a 6" circle, not a 5-3/4" circle, but it's easier than making and connecting numerous dots. Actually, that's what those holes in the ruler are for. Neat idea for the pattern weights; I think I need to make some for myself. Thanks!
WOW! I just made the yo-yo weight, and was amazed at how great they look! Lowes did not have 1" washers so I had to use 3/4" washers. Stacked them 3 high. The 2 7/8" circle pattern measurement was a little too loose for my taste, so I cut it to 2 5/8" and it was perfect for me! Thank you for such a great tutorial. I'm just getting back to sewing after 30+ years, and I'm having a blast!
Thanks so much! I always wanted to make these and you did the math for me! I can have fun with my scrap fabric and patterned duct tape from the dollar store 😊
Great way to make these. I have very old pattern weights that I bought back in the 70s that work wonderfully but are utilitarian and not pretty at all.. I want to make your yoyo ones for our granddaughter, so much prettier. I just found your channel and subscribed. Thanks so much, Linda Hardesty
+craftoncue Thank you for subscribing! I just started a closed group on my jsterndesigns facebook page... It's dedicated to sharing inspiration and getting help with fitting and such.
Brilliant idea!!! I must go and look for some of these. One could be converted into a mini pin cushion to hold sewing needles if you’re into tacking garments. Thank you.
Ribbons might be a good option too - lots of patterns and colors to play with too! And no cutting strips, just glue and go. My son just picked me up 40 3/4" washers at the hardware today, so I know what I'll be doing when I get home tomorrow.
Hey, I convert the old iron by removing the power cord and use that as a weight. then I have a round piece of steel turned on the metal lathe drill a hole in it then cover it with fabric. I also use some of the laser cut circles in 50 mm acrylic. I've also made a door handle into a weight. I also used a chunk of wood with a handle added on. if that's what you want as in bigger weights. I also used a rectangle of steel, covered that with fabric, that's really fun to use.
I am wanting to make donuts woth polymer clay like on a few videos I've seen! I might get some 1 inch washers and with 3/4 washers to various sizes like you have!
Thanks for this vid! I have always just used whatever that was heavy, like canned veg, to be pattern weights. I know someone who makes little pattern weights out of little fabric bags which she stuffs with uncooked rice, but these are so much better! I think a trip to the hardware store is in order! (P.S. That batik makes the pattern weights gorgeous too)
Priced pattern weights on Amazon....!!! No thank you, I will make my own. Love the fabric ones w/ the buttons....and, Boy, after 60 years of sewing: I have a lot of great buttons.
Not sure if you have used plum positioning gauge. It calls for a hole in plate where I dont have a hole. I have Singer 4423 heavy duty. I saw where you worked around that issue with using tape with another neat device.
I use rocks that are roughly the same size as those washers. It’s a free option, although I will admit that the uniform shape of the washers appeals to my OCD lol
My Pleasure, ...I can't remember what the name of the glue was... I went to look at the bottle and the label came off! Any fabric glue or a glue gun would work!
I found these 2" outside diameter washers... The hole is a little smaller 3/8" so you'll have to use skinny strips of fabric or duck tape to wrap around them. Here's my affiliate link: amzn.to/4049vkM
Cool! I am usually gathering up (and then have to return) various candles, phones, etc to use as weights. I will not use the tinfoil looking tape tho, they look like "Ding-dongs Snack Cakes" and are making me hungry! Thanks!
So sorry I didn't see your comment until now. They are all different sizes of the metal washers. The large one is 3" in diameter. Thank you for following along with me

Do have a link to washers with appropriate weight on Amazon?? I purchased a set of 100 from Amazon and the entire box was way too light
