Ahh yeah, this was such a great historic research project! I used to study in the same street as where the cocaine factory used to be located in Amsterdam. We still have opium samples in the Rijksmuseum, to demonstrate to visitors how we made money back in the days. And damn, I miss the Pauw & Witteman talkshow. Such a suburb quality show.

He has reacted to 1980's Andre van Duin and to multiple complete documentary series on Dutch history by Hans Goedkoop. So, why not to this very interesting, fairly unknown story of the world and the Netherlands in World War I, that understandably hardly ever gets mentioned in British, French, American victory stories hailing their heroic troops. All high on Dutch cocain. Including the Germans, because hey we were neutral. And a revealing glimpse into Dutch colonial practice.
We must however be careful to judge from our "war on drugs" tainted perspective. The rules were very different back then. Plus we made the stuff, EVERYONE used it.
The Brits had fought two opium wars half a century earlier.
It's fascinating and makes you wonder what armies would use today.
I live in the Netherlands and I'm completely flabbergasted about it. I'm from 1956 and we did not learn a lot about WWI apart from that we were neutral
We did not even learn that the Queen gave the empire of Germany a house to stay in the Netherlands after he had to flee.

Het meeste wat ik weet heb ik uit boeken die ik zelf heb gekocht of geleend. Ik krijg niet echt de indruk dat het tegenwoordig veel beter is gesteld met de geschiedenis lessen als het over Nederland gaat. In mijn tijd werd. Indonesië, de slavernij, de Japanse bezetting en de wreedheden eind jaren veertig door het Nederlandse leger in Indonesië compleet verzwegen alsof het niet bestond en nooit gebeurd was.
Heb een verslag gelezen ..waarin een pastoor .die China had bezocht .voor en na de opium..Hij vertelde dat complete steden dorpen verslaafd waren .En de uitspraak was .Eerst eet de mens de opium

Yes, I've known about this for a while. This video is such an insight into human nature. We made it, because we saw a market. We stole it first, obviously. Just like all the other colonial powers of the time did with many types of plants. We made it better and sold it to anyone who wanted it.
And everyone did want it. Both sides were willing to give it to their soldiers to gain an advantage.
And it probably was perfectly legal, too. Even if some people at the time already may have questioned the morality of it.

In the first minute of this video they said it right. When there money is to be made the Dutch Will be there. Even now Holland is the biggest xtc producer of the world. And the provite is 12 bilion euro a year. Thats 15 bilion us dollars. We are business poeple we Dutchies. That not always a good thing but some of us dont care . Its all about the money. 😢

Many of our medical discoveries have been made in circumstances that would be unacceptable today. We still use these substances in medicine today, someone has to make it, right? Diamorphine is simply a very good painkiller, only we know it as HEROIN. I know it’s still being used in hospitals at least, maybe in palliative care too.
