    I think you vastly overestimate the political backlash Russia would receive from more trade with North Korea.
    As far as I know, China is not only a trading partner, but also in an active military alliance with North Korea, and that hardly bothers anyone.

    • @AniMageNeBy
      @AniMageNeBy Рік тому

      There!! Finally someone whom noticed this as well! I was starting to think: is everyone lacking any political insight here? ;-) It is as you say, my friend: I've made a post on it (above in the thread) where I say the same as you, and explain why this idea of "political backlash" for Russia is EXTREMELY unlikely.
      The only backlash Russia got was from the West, but there isn't much extra sanctions left THEY can give Russia, whether Putin meets Kim or not. The same goes for N-K. I saw some high-up in the US government say: if Korea delivers weapons, they will be severely sanctioned! With what? N-K has been under sanctions since 1953 and - before Russia, now - one of the most sanctioned countries in the world. If they didn't care back then, why would they care now? It's *reasonable* to assume their tightening diplomatic and economic ties with Russia will be of FAR greater benefit to them than anything the West can still throw at them of sanctions.
      And what about Russia? Let's REALLY analyze this, instead of just wishful-thinking like our Western media often portrays things and pretend it to be factual. I've made the same remark as you, because it's pretty obvious to see the contradiction in what Simon says in this vid, and his prime idea about it. Namely, China has had strong ties for decades with N-K - Simon says this himself in the vid! Ok... so why didn't China get any backlash during those 3 decades, then? Why didn't all the countries "shy away" as one would expect, if the basic premise of this vid would be true?! Not even the Western countries did or do it. Ergo: this idea makes no sense, or at the very least, actual facts seem not to corroborate with the idea that stronger ties with N-K makes other countries to shun you as well. Also... Russia strengthened its ties (and got military aid!) from another pariah state: Iran. Did Russia-friendly countries like Brazil and India shy away then? No. So why should they now? In fact, MORE countries have joined the BRICS after Russia invaded Ukraine and got aid from pariah states, instead of them shunning away! Which, once again, directly flies in the face of the proclaimed premise!
      So this whole premise is really nonsensical, and is merely the wishful-thinking projection of the feelings of Westerners/Western countries. In reality, Brazil, India, China, etc. wouldn't and will not change their stance at all, whether Putin meets Kim 100 or a 1000 times, and whether he gets arms or not. Western countries always think other countries and people think like them; this is one of the more glaring mental faults we have which obfuscates reality.

    I keep seeing this idea that Russia and China are allies/friends. This is just not true. Both sides have a history fraught with disagreements, diplomatic coercion, and yes, even warfare. Right now, it suits both sides to put on the facade that they are best friends, but make no mistake, that is skin-deep at most. Recently, China published a map where Russian territory is marked as a Chinese possession. Imagine if the US made a map claiming England as a territorial possession: it is a statement of disrespect for the relationship, and you can bet there were rumblings about this map in the Kremlin. Russia and China are not allies; they are diplomatic frienemies. They will work together for their individual benefit, but the moment there is good incentive to drop the act, the real colors will be on display for the world to see.

    • @AniMageNeBy
      @AniMageNeBy Рік тому +1

      Partly true. But seen the fact their dislike for the hegemonic tendencies of the US is far bigger than the dislike for each other, one might still call them allies of convenience. They are conducting what is called "Realpolitik".

      @daniell1483 Рік тому

      @@AniMageNeBy No, they are what is called "strategic partners". That is the farthest either side has been willing to trust the other. They will work together, but not because they have any kind of true loyalty for the other.

      I said they were conducting "Realpolitik", and they are. I do not "equate" the two, I'm saying the one is a consequence of the other. Maybe it's you whom should look the term up. It's a pure fact that they are allied (but maybe you're not aware the term is broader than just a formal military ally) - you can call it "strategic partnership" too if you want to delve into the semantic nitpicking, but the fact remains their politics are based on practical rather than moral or ideological considerations. As said: an "alliance of convenience", thus, where pragmatism of economic and diplomatic interactions matter, not of ideology or shared common ethical principles.

      @@AniMageNeBy I think you are the one who needs to look up the definition. Of "ally". If Vietnam declared war on China this second, do you think Russia would jump to China's defense? Begin mobilizing military, diplomatic, and materiel resources to help fight Vietnam? Fuck no! Russia couldn't care less if China faced war or some other external foe.
      But that is what an ally is, in the domain of diplomatic relations. If Mexico declared war on the US this second, you'd have allies on three different continents who would begin to prepare for a call to arms, begin discussing economic coordination, sending orders down the chains of command... a united effort to explicitly help an ally in need.
      Again: Russia and China are NOT allies.

    • @AniMageNeBy
      @AniMageNeBy Рік тому

      @@daniell1483 Sigh. Ok, let's look at the dictionary definition then, because otherwise we'll be here with a tit-for-tat for ages:
      ally
      verb
      al·ly ə-ˈlī
      ˈa-ˌlī
      allied; allying
      Synonyms of ally
      transitive verb
      : to unite or form a connection or relation between : associate
      He allied himself with a wealthy family by marriage.
      intransitive verb
      : to form or enter into an alliance
      two factions allying with each other
      ally
      noun
      al·ly ˈa-ˌlī
      ə-ˈlī
      plural allies
      1: a sovereign or state associated with another by treaty or league
      America and its allies
      2: one that is associated with another as a helper : a person or group that provides assistance and support in an ongoing effort, activity, or struggle
      3: a political ally
      She has proven to be a valuable ally in the fight for better working conditions.
      -often now used specifically of a person who is not a member of a marginalized or mistreated group but who expresses or gives support to that group
      As I said, thus, "ally" has more than one definition and interpretation, and it doesn't mean it has to be a formal military ally. In the diplomatic sense, you can be political allies, without having a formal agreement for military assistance.
      So clearly it was YOU who needed to look up the definitions. Your interpretation that "ally" can only mean two nations having a formal agreement of military assistance is obviously wrong, seen the literal quote of the definitions I gave you - yet instead of acknowledging this, you're simply doubling down on it. It's just foolhardy.

      Standard "dumb" shells can be produced at a massive scale with a relatively modest production set up. The problems that Russia has with new manufacture is all of the sanctions targeting significant military materials, such as explosives precursors, industrial machinery and computer chips. Russia can make their own steel, a fair amount of their own explosives, and as they retool more factories for military production I think their supply problems will steadily disappear. It's going to be an uphill battle for them the entire way as they have to deal with corruption, sanctions, western machinery breaking down, the complete free-fall of the Ruble, exodus of skilled workers, etc.
      point being, if they really put their mind to it they can manufacture tens of thousands of shells per day.

      Footage from every part of the Cold War made life look miserable in comparison to the West. The country famously cannot make a functioning car and are currently dependent on China to do so with the factories in Russia.

      I don't think it's anything more than it's been said to be. The media is making it more. I think it's really just a way for some countries to try to get a bit more sovereignty than the status quo. IMO the bigger question is, what will they do when they get a bit more power. Will they turn around and push another flavor of the same thing they were tired of onto other non-aligned countries? There is no way to know.

    Ukraine had the largest military in continental Europe. It got decimated to a point where they are living from material donation to material donation. Provided by the entirety of NATO. Russia is thinking about buying ammunition supplies from North Korea. Where is the big deal?
    The Russian economy could provide enough ammo, just not in time. By comparison, not even the US would have made it with their artillery ammunition supplies they had in stock and would have to go through bottlenecks to keep production steady, as the world's largest economy.

    • @AniMageNeBy
      @AniMageNeBy Рік тому

      Again: naive. Even if Ukraine would finally break through the front lines (they've been trying for months now without much success) and would come at the border of Crimea - Putin will never let Crimea go, since that is, in fact, Russian (until 1957 at least, when it was "given away" by the communist chairman of the USSR (himself an Ukrainian; get it?) even if that was no allowed by the USSR constitution, and even if the opinion of the populace there was never asked). Anyhow, point is: he will never relinquish Crimea, even if he has to use nukes.
      Sometimes, I feel like the West is forgetting that Russia has 1500 nukes, and that, if provoked enough, and it's going to the ultimate escalation, Russia WILL use it.
      It's plain as daylight that at some point - alas, often after hundredthousands of deaths - peace-talks will have to start, and a compromise will need to be found. There has been NO war or battle, where things didn't end with some agreement or peacetalk, so I find this obstinate behavior rather foolish. Because in the end, you know you're going to need to come to an agreement in the end anyhow.
