All the better for the rational consumer that's unwilling to spend 1k for a phone.
as time goes on that 4k screen may eventually come to midrange phone since the tech will be cheaper! its only a matter of time. I mean some phones already have 120 hz and 1440p displays. 4k will be the new midrange but who knows when.
To me anyone who uses these devices to the full capability, ppl who you may call pros or power users- to put it frankly these midrange offerings just don't cut it, speaking from experience. The drop in performance, battery life, fluidity, build quality and materials, 3rd party accessories and durability are all extremely noticeable and often times justify the price difference. Samsungs lineup is a great example, they have an amazingly impressive midrange lineup, but none of the cameras on any of those devices touch the galaxy s20's and thats by design. I would argue most of the people who are satisfied with the midrange devices either don't have a need for what the more premium devices offer, which is totally fine. Or just for whatever reason have never owned a true flagship device and therefore don't know what they're missing. With all that being said i think there is still a huge percentage of people who still care about having impressive hardware and specs, because of what it represents to someone with a desire to utilize all of the features one of these flagship has to offer.

I don't appreciate that a "flagship" smartphone costs as much as any decent gaming laptop. That's why I jumped ship after having the S8+ and went Pixel 3a. "Do you want Google to continue down this direction of affordable smartphones or go back to their flagship, high end stuff but maybe a little better?" To that I say, is it too much to ask for both? I mean is it really? Google the creators of Android and one of the most valuable companies in the world, can't make two devices? A flagship model that pushes boundaries and challenges the market in the high end and an affordable option that pushes the market in the mid end? There's room for both.
A focused strategy with clear goals is better. They will be the one plus brand of the future and they can be in everyone's head when we think of mid range with great quality. Also they won't need to compete with themselves. Just look at Samsung. In order to justify the price differences on their models, the mid range ones suck and the high end ones are too expensive.
Because they can, doesn't mean that it will be as profitable. Obviously I don't have access to the metrics they're basing their business model upon, but I'm pretty sure that the end goal is always MOAR POWAH (money).
It's a lot more efficient for the company to make something that most of the people want from them. The Pixel 3A changed the game for them. Pixel phones were never a popular phone until the 3A came out.
They can but they don't have to satisfy all your needs or everyone's need. They need to make money and it doesn't make sense to continue a strategy or compete in a space that hasn't been working out for them as much. TLDR: $$$
@@yashwin8821 they were always mid range but unreasonably priced and now they are priced more reasonably.. and that's about it. they were never flagship tier imo

The abysmal Pixel 4 sales show how people won't buy overpriced hardware for the software yet again. Especially when the same software will be available on the midrange priced 4a.
People won't buy terribly bad hardware that is overpriced. That's the point. Pixel 4 ? 2900Mha, 18W, no fingerprint scanner, 12Mpx at the back, no wideangle, ... etc. and you sell it for 769€ ? Really ? You can have the best software ever, if you don't have at least the minimum required, you are out of the list. What I want ? Just a Pixel 4 with some adjustments: 3700-3800Mha battery (on that 5.7" form factor - Keep that ! -, we can't really do much, so that's fine !), add wideangle, add back fingerprint scanner and keep facial recognition, keep wireless charging and please keep that high end chipset, keep 90Hz screen, and all of that for max 900-1000€. I agree... Give me a cheaper chip set with an amazing camera and I'm game every time. I feel like much of 800 series chips goes unused by most consumers... More power than what we need!
The thing is, could that cheaper chipset also have something like worse bluetooth audio or Bluetooth functionality in general? For the past few years Google has totally nailed the "a" line but man they make flagships as if they don't wanna sell them (especially the pixel 4) Can't wait for the new strategy and I hope they will have continuity and success like the "a" line Edit: Waaw over 100+ likes! 🤯Thank you all so much!!!
Not sure the ”a” line is that successful, what data do you have on that? The Pixel 3a sold similar to the Pixel 3 that was over twice the price, you would expect far more sales if you think the Pixel 3 sold poorly, which it did. I think there is a hardcore Pixel fandom on YT that hype the ”a” line but out in the real world that is anything but the truth. More so outside the US where we get far better phones at a similar price or less! I think Google is seeing how the US market praised the low-spec bin parts 4a and have seen that they are willing to pay OTT and Google can make far more profits with marketing like this rather than a quality phone. Be careful what you wish for...
Why can't we have both? Every year for the past half decade or so I've been hoping for a google phone that can go toe to toe with the samsung flagships and every year they come up a little short. With their software and camera they could definitely beat samsung at their own game. What's disappointing is that google doesn't seem like they're willing to try. I think they underestimate the amount of wealthy people who wouldn't mind paying a pretty penny for the best of the best. I really think they are losing out on a huge market segment here. It's a situation where they could probably have their cake and eat it too. They can continue producing their typical upper middle class pixel phones that a lot of people can afford. But then they can make a google pixel 5 plus/ultra and charge $1300. That strategy has certainly worked well for samsung and Apple so as a google fan it is incredibly disappointing. I would love to throw $1300 at google for a beast of a phone, I just wish that they would give me that chance. I'm sure a lot of other people feel this way.
Sounds like you want an iPhone :) Everything works, best camera and video by far even after a year overall. the software is proven great merely by the fact it takes less than half the ram of android to do the same.
"Pixel" has always been associated with "Premium". Why not keep a premium line and reintroduce something like the nexus line of mid-range phones? Why only one phone?
Your answer is at 3:30..."to make [Google lots of] money." That is all G really cares about now. I have wanted a G phone since the 2 series...but I would rather give more money to others because quality and Google are a difficult alliance.
@@aravfernandez I need to clarify what I wrote, as re-reading the OP I can see there is a subtly different definition of premium. These phones (in hardware terms) ARE the budget offering from G as this market segment makes the most money. In price they are more premium as G feels their brand (rather than hardware/quality) commands a premium. Pixel once meant premium hardware (makes less money) but now the term is more a good enough hardware + brand (makes more money).

Hi man! Great video, always enjoy your thoughts. The problem with the lower end processors are that they don't work. They feel great the first year but these phones get 3 major software updates so you could potentially keep them for 4 years (or obviously longer if you don't care about software version) but this phone will be slow and laggy after 1-2 years with this processor, guaranteed! This is the problem with lower end processors. I'm sure they feel snappy out of the box but people usually keep phones for 2-3 years, which is a pain with phones with lower end processors...

"Do you want Google to continue down this direction of affordable smartphones or go back to their flagship, high end stuff but maybe a little better?"
To that I say, is it too much to ask for both?
I mean is it really? Google the creators of Android and one of the most valuable companies in the world, can't make two devices? A flagship model that pushes boundaries and challenges the market in the high end and an affordable option that pushes the market in the mid end?
There's room for both.
Google struggles with the quality control of high end though.

I think there is a hardcore Pixel fandom on YT that hype the ”a” line but out in the real world that is anything but the truth. More so outside the US where we get far better phones at a similar price or less! Samsung in a nutshell

Damn, I really miss the all-metal phones like HTC used to make when I saw the first few of the video, when there is no NFC or wireless charging then I think metal phones should come back.
Doesn't every single phone have nfc? And correct me if I'm wrong doesn't an all metal body interfere with that?
@@yab3146some but not all only premium and flagships. Design is just a preference btw.

Congrats Dave on your 3M subscribers
Pixels all about the user experience! I'll be glad if they keep it that way
New strategy: make even more compromises, dont recognise the phone as high end, but continue to sell phones at high price of 500 and 700 dollars.
2016 me: Google has a route map and is going to change the smartphone game.
Today me: 😐😐😐
Hey at least I can buy their shit, rich fuck
Honestly I can see a better route map now more than then. Right now they're making no nonsense, more affordable, and top class camera
@@_tsu_ If people who own the Pixel phone are rich, then most people I know are "rich" lol
google is doing the right thing, giving people the best value for their money. High quality phones for great prices. I find the new stuff like 90hz display 1080p+ displays gimmicks and a small difference for most consumers.
@@TipperProject I think S20 FE just ruined the party for Pixel 5.
My friend has a pixel 2 and I was suprised how good the back camera of that phone could shoot. I think pixel are the phone that most of the people should be looking for
I'm torn. I have a Pixel 2 XL and love it. That being said I would happily upgrade every year at the premium price if they got better. The problem is they don't seem to get better. My 3-year-old 2XL has a much higher pixel density than this year's flagship "PIXEL". I am glad that they're going this route as an option. But why not also have an ultra option. Some of us are power users and want all the premium specs while keeping pure Android
Shoot, I 3 minutes late and now he have 3 million subs.
It has been a week since he reached the milestone
They must put an amazing screen and battery on pixel 5.
I don't really care about the screen but imagine a $500 phone by Google with perfect camera and long lasting battery (I'm talking 3 days). That'd be what I've been looking for for years now
@@ColdPizzaPictures3 days? The fuck?
I want a Pixel with a good (multiple lens) camera and a one day battery life.
@@ColdPizzaPictures You're likely talking about the 4a XL 5G then even though the camera might not be totally perfect. When has Google ever put a decent battery in one of their flagship offerings?
Apparently 4080mah battery. The battery life will be very good imo. The screen is 1080p 6inch 90hz
@@ColdPizzaPictures 3 days what kind of crack are you on
its all about longevity for me i want my phones to last 4+ years so i guess having a powerfull chip is kinda important
Me too.
Any chipset
from a good company is reliable, Longetivity depends on quality of hardware and software that your device runs on.

Nah, what are you doing on your phone? Unless you're "gaming" on your phone, the work your phone is gonna do is not gonna increase much in the next 4 years

Let’s just acknowledge that if a phone has a 7 series snapdragon chip in it, it shouldn’t be $700+ . That’s flagship price and you could literally buy a new iPhone with that price. I just hate it when they try to make $1200 the new flagship standard and make $700 midrange.
Exactly! $700 is no way near mid-range!!!

I love the progression:
Microsoft: Here's our new folding phablet, you can't review it or turn it on until we tell you to.
Google: Here's the Pixel 5... well.. a brick of metal that looks like it. Stay hyped.
Me and my brother just got the regular 4a, and coming from an iphone 7, I like it a lot. I dont really need much in a phone, it runs well, it takes way better pictures than Im used to, it has a clean interface for the most part, and it has a headphone jack, which I have been missing for years. And all of that came with a decently cheap price, so i would say Im satisfied, I appriciated what they are doing with this line up here, and I hope they continue to put out mid range phones.
Google should increase their software update timeframe to 4 years from just 3 years.
They should update them until it's no longer possible and not a fix time frame. Just like Apple is doing it.
Everyone's priorities are different my friend
@@Raja995mh33 Hahahaha! 🍎 is brilliant at "updates", especially those that affect battery life and longevity 👍
I just meant if a Samsung or other xiaomi Android's can get 2/3 years for software updates my Pixel should get at least 4 years
@@zacpdx Nexus devices gets Android 11.
Anyone feel it's time for Google to provide 4-5 years of android updates on Pixel, now that other brands have started giving 3 years support
Congratulations on 3 mil 🥳🥳🥳
$700 for a plastic phone with non premium specs is a big NO from me... I'd much rather get an iPhone 12 at that price point. I'm afraid Google's strategy is a miss once again. :(
Yeah I feel like $500 is a good price point
Lumias used to be made of plastic and cost as much as that, plastic is an extremely versatile material tbh.
Whats the benefit of glass rather than plastic?
for 600$???
@You are Sexy Expensive for what it offered tho, not just because it was expensive
The ideal would be google having their own chipset for taking advantage on software optimization
That's a terrible idea. Setting up the infrastructure to manufacture processors would cost google insane amounts, no where near justified for the sales of any pixel model. There's a reason so few companies actually make processors.
HDYM softwere optimizations. Qualcomm provides manufacturers with blobs for optimizations weekly. What do even think "optimizations" can do??
@Matthew Knipfer I've seen some rumors that say that google is actually make their own chip. Whether its true or nt and how good they will be is another question.

Same. Probably won't upgrade for another 2 years or more it's still running like a champ.
I use one too, I believe it is by far still the best Pixel made by Google. It's simple clean, and it runs really well. Google should have kept upgrading the Pixel 3.

Sundar : Your whole lineup is fired.
*dave holding a metal blank* “Notice the curvature on the back, you cant do this with metal”
Yep think he doesn't really know anything about machining 😂😂
What I want most is a 5 XL.
What I really want is two options. 4a, 4a XL, and Pixel 5, 5 XL. I have had a Pixel since the beginning, and although I actually don't mind the 4a size AT ALL (It's actually the one I reach for more often than not), I know I will eventually want a larger screen.
That being said, you could have handed me a Pixel 4a and I would have thought it was flagship aside from the plastic back. Better battery than my 4 XL, better speeds and smoother experience than my 3 (regular size).
Processors don't matter much anymore. It's for spec kings/chads that need to tell everyone how they have the highest processor.
Put a Mid Range chipset.
Ask a Flagship Price - Team Google
And
Put a 2014 display.
Ask a flagship price- Apple.
Smoke & Mirrors to what Display are you referring?
iPhone SE is no flagship, iPhone 11 does not have a 2014 display. It has 2020 flagship level colour accuracy und brightness. The pixel density while low is just high enough to be okay
hey Dave, will you review the Sony Xperia 5 II when it launches? Looks like the first competitve flagship from Sony.
what is competitive about it? I'm out of the loop.
Anderson Ribeiro Snapdragon 865, Full HD+ OLED 120 Hz screen, triple camera set, front facing stereo speakers, 4000 mAh and 3.5 mm headphone jack.
No wireless charging sadly, but because they said that they used a grafite lamina to prevent if from heating instead and upgraded software image processing.
Check Sony's website to know more about it.
theyve had so many phones that were competitive, but then they price them at the top when thats just not what theyre worth, and then they seem to never advertise
@@bradhaines3142 yeah, but this time looks like the pricing is correct as it is a flagship-level phone. Now the thing is that Sony always messes up on the little things that make a flagship a flagship.
@Cheems Burger yeah, that is the only thing that makes me concern about the heating. Hope the graphite lamina does its job.
I think Google pixel 5 should be pixel 4a's front and 4's back
Better materials adds extra cost and with the 4a front, you lose the face unlock so they need the finger print reader on the back. While I like a glass feel a lot more, plastic is more durable and cheaper so I'm fine with that sacrifice.
I used to think I needed the highest end chipset until I finally realized I don't keep my phone's long enough for the longevity of those more expensive chips to benefit me
Every DAVE2D vid starts with "OK"
no, not all
Some start with Alright... Just noticed that today!
The second I refreshed my homepage
I'm so confused why paying more loses the headphone jack
same
Because they want to sell you their wireless headphones
You don’t own wireless headphones yet? It’s 2020 man
Because the person who buys the expensive pixel is more likely to buy the pixel buds.
it costs negative money
I'm excited about these models. I use my phone for social media and to take pictures. I love my pixel for the camera and I don't quite need the latest in specs. As long as they keep making the software and the camera's better, I will continue to buy. Specially now that they are coming out with these prices!
