Hey Ally, it would be super cool if you did a series on diffrent styles done differently for each the kibbe types. Like how to do Goth, boho, resort wear etc to suit the types. Anyway just an idea. Love your work.
My first job out of design school was with a millinery manufacturer! I always felt the most creative designing hats. After blocking a hat, sometimes I would end up wearing them backwards. I wear hats every day when I walk. I have most of the styles you’ve shown in this video...and a few you didn’t mention. I love fascinators and veiled cocktail hats. Great video!💋💋
Yes! Was expecting fascinator! But Aly did a phenomenal job And I ❤ cloche hats! Never felt dowdy or costume like- I usually just have jeans or shorts ir midi-mini skirts with leggings or tights, come to think of it I did stick to slim, more structured vibe. But I am always relaxed with some movements and flow !
@@hallievanoutryve3109 Gotta credit the British Royals Ladies for bringing the love for the fascinators! I’ll never forget Princesses Beatrice and Eugenia’s at the Prince and Princess of Wales’ wedding! Hats will garner you attention. 👒
I love cloche hats. I have several felt ones in neutral colors and straw. For me they are practical but stylish because in the cold weather they keep me warm and don't mess up my hair. In the summer, they protect my scalp and face from the sun. In the winter I wear beanies in my house to stay warm and even wear one to bed. I loved this video!
Turbans and hip hop can definitely go together, for bohemian, or artistic hip hop vibes - Adding a decent sized hoop earrings or sunglasses give a turban extra attitude The final examples look like wraps worn to keep textured/curly hair protected!
Yeah lots of hats she said it wouldn’t work with hip hop, sporty or boho are precisely the hats you find all the time people with this aesthetic using. Turbans in particular are such a common combo with textured hair that the old Hollywood look is not the first association that comes to mind. You can see she’s very (and by that I mean VERY) knowledgeable on 19 or 20th century European fashion and that tends to result in blindspots when it comes to styles with more eastern, African or South American roots. Nonetheless is a great video on models and classifications, nowadays is so easy to mix and match by using unconventional colors and fabrics that any hat you can make “work” with your wardrobe.
I’m obsessed with my mariner’s hat and my beret. They both elevate every outfit that I wear and add a personal touch. Hats are really underrated.btw I’m a soft natural.
Amazing job, Aly! Thank you for all the effort, hard work, information and inspiration! Much appreciated! Hats were always no go zone for me, confusing and daunting, but this is so interesting and brings the world of head wear into entirely different perspective for me! Thank you! Happy holidays!
I wear a Trilby hat nearly every day. It's instant style, no fussing with the hair required. lol I get so many compliments on them. I have about 25 of them. Even if I'm a hot mess, I put on the hat and somehow it all just comes together and elevates.
I'm a cliche TR... so I love my Spanish Cordovan hat, jewelled velvet/silk turbans, Spanish-style berets and Russian fur Ushanka. I also love my handmade Australian outback Akubra hat 😁 I live in Melbourne so get hot dry summers and tons of icy, wet weather. Perfect for hat-wearers/fashionistas! Lol. Great video btw too Ali. Love from Australia! 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
I'm glad you posted this, coz I'm also from Victoria and I've always called fur hats Ushankas, and I just had this brief moment wondering if that was normal for us Aussie's to call them that or if it was just me. 😅 So, I'm glad to know that, yes, we do call it Ushanka here. 😅
I wish there was a mention of hats worn by the royals, they're quite intriguing but anyway amazing video Aly, seems like you put in a lot of work. Thanks for sharing.
I love hats. I have 6 different styles that I wear regularly (though some seasonally) and I've just ordered 3 more. The hats that I find I can't wear due to face shape are the cloche and the bucket. The ones I won't wear are the cowboy and the boss of the plains because I live in Western Canada and don't want to be associated with the cultures that go with them. Thank you for your video on the different types of hats and I look forward to your upcoming videos.
I miss the glories of the "fascinator." It used to be a common accessory for any occasion requiring a cocktail dress or ballgown and they sported lovely short veils. Sigh. Aside from the English royals, nobody wears them anymore. It is a sad diminishment to feminine frivolity, IMHO. Lovely content, thanks!
I'm a Soft Natural and hats don't suit me! 🥲 Not even beanies look good on me, but I have to keep my head warm in the winter! Aly, could you explain why certain people don't look good with hats? And what they can do to look better with beanies in the winter?
I'm a romantic with ingenue and romantic essence and I have to say that newsboy hats always look good on me. I love wearing those. Fedoras and trilby hats also look good.
I have worn several of these hats over the years, but I am starting to appreciate top hats. I keep picturing myself in a top hat with a few shiny black feathers, black cinched waist coat, with a silk purple paisley scarf or faux mink collar, and black leather gloves. All of which I can get from Etsy (yay!). I don't know how it will look in real life on my 5'10, SD body, but I'm hopeful I will love it. Thanks for such a great video!
This was very good video, the only thing that was missing from beret history is speaking about the Basque shepherds and how they originally made berets. There are different types of basque berets too. They were making and wearing them in the 1800s before the French military adopted it.
When it comes to hats, I stay in my comfort zone. In warmers months, I like to wear a large straw hat with a ribbon that can be tied under the chin, I think it gives an unique cute touch and my hat doesn't fly away when I cycle. For sport I like to wear a straw cap, that is open on the top (a bit like tennis style) so that I can have a ponytail. I don't see this type of hat around much, yet it gives a sport chic vibe. In winter, for sport I wear this kind of knitted headband, and for outings I wear bérets. I'm french and love my bérets, I have them in all my favorite colors but mostly stick to beige or light colors to not create harsh contrast with my skin tone. I have some summer versions in paper and cotton too. Bérets are my favorite kind of hat ! Not a hat, but I also like headbands although I don't wear them as often. I think people are a bit scared of hat and think it doesn't suit them when it isn't true. A hat can really pull a whole outfit together, a bit like the cherry on top of the cake. It looks very stylish, and sometimes can make a conversation starter ! Plus it protects from sun and keeps warm in cold months, so I even consider them a healthy accessory ! I enjoyed your video a lot, it seems very well researched and I learnt many things for sure. It made me feel like sharing a bit about my own hat taste, I hope that's fine 👒
Oh my god! I had a green wool newsboy cap in the 2000s that I wore everywhere as a kid! I'm now working as a historical re-enactor/tour guide and I have one again-- a version of them were a popular casual look for English women in the 1770s as a way of protecting their hair from the weather.
I love hats but very few work for me, they seem to clash with my head shape and feel uncomfortable around my ears. Didn't help that I have thick curly hair. Can't wait for the next one, I'm shopping for a winter hat right now. Thanks for the info!
Try a turban or a scarf ir dedicated hair wrap! They protect curly hair and are a quick way to add style. I is easy to find inexpensive, vintage scarfs at thrift stores, alternatively There are tons handmade hairwraps & turbans on Etsy and some cool women run businesses that make beautiful ones.
I’m new to your channel, totally obsessed with all of your videos now as I just started my journey through understanding my style and colour… thank you so much for your amazing work! But the reason why I decided to write this comment is because I want to say thank you for naming Balaklava a Ukrainian city!
It's been a beanie for many decades (at least the knitted version) in many countries. I've only ever heard Canada call them touques. I don't think they are called it even in France.
Glad you mentioned Oasis. As soon as I saw bucket hat I thought of Liam Gallagher. ☺️ I don't wear hats, except for straw sunhat on the beach, because they look weird on me, but this video was really enjoyable (and educational).
Great Video and i'm soooo curious about the face shape video with hats! I love hats and never leave the house without when it's cold outside. My favourites are Fedora, Newsboy cap and Beanie with a fur pompom.
I absolutely love these origins type of videos you do! I love hats and they look good on me. I struggle though just physically wearing them. Eventually they will give me a headache. Also I feel rude wearing them indoors, but once I’ve committed to wearing one, my hair will be ruined, so I cannot take it off.
I just learned what a balaclava was last week. I‘m considering getting one just to keep my face warm while out and about in the snow and frigid temperatures.
You could also try wrapping your scarf a bit higher around your lower face 🙂 i bought myself a balaclava this winter but finally hasn't come around using it 🤔 if it's one with a face covering part than maybe I would have gotten uses out of it already
This is a very informative, well thought-out and nicely presented video! As a hat lover, I own almost every hat style mentioned except for the Bowler, the Mariner, the Flat Cap, and the traditional Top Hat, although I do have a shorter-crowned top hat covered in white silk, much like one of Stevie Nicks' styles. I also have a Hunter's Cap (usually made of wool with fur front and ear flaps), and a Pillbox Hat (Jackie Kennedy Onassis' hat of choice in the 1960s). Cowboy and bucket hats are my favorites, but I also love a good Winter Fur hat and Baseball Caps, including Trucker's Caps. I'm definitely going to watch all your videos! Thank you!👒⭐
What a good Video Aly, thanks a lot: in Summer i wear a Panama hat, iam DC and have a big squarish head, its not easy for me to find a good one, that fits. In Winter i have more Options...
Thank you for all your work and Informations. I would have more Informations about the russian hats that you mentioned at the end of the video. I really love this type /Form of hats. I live in Switzerland and i don't find this type of hats, in good quality, in my size. I don't know where i can buy it, i don't know the names for this hats...if someone have more Informations, please tell me. Thank you very much
Hi Aly! I just saw your Marylin Monroe vid and I was wondering if you know what it's called when Marylin smiles and one of her eyes appears smaller than the other? I have it too and like Marylin it's clear in pictures and I dislike it :/ I just wish I knew what it's called to look into fixing it.
May I ask where you order the thin scarves? I have had difficulty finding a good selection of the long narrow style, and I like them as headbands as well. It is fascinating seeing the historical context of all these different styles, looking forward to the faceshapes video!
I love hats and often wear them in summer, then in straw and sometimes in autumn/spring in wool. my favorites are the trilby or the cloche. Being SN, I don't wear small hats with little volume and besides, my natural curls don't fit well under there. I knit my own beanies. 🧶I have been looking for an oversized beret for years. Unfortunately I haven't found one yet. Thanks for this great overview!
I absolutely love hats, but other than beanie every hat looks like you were trying too hard where I live. And beanies... if I pull them down, they make my head too small for my body and if I wear them pulled back they just fly off. Looking forward to hats for faceshapes, because I have many hats, but not sure which ones look good.

Interesting that the 'beanie' has come into the vernacular. A beanie is a touque and has been here in Canada for a very very long time.
It's been a beanie for many decades (at least the knitted version) in many countries. I've only ever heard Canada call them touques. I don't think they are called it even in France.

I adore your channel so much and all your videos are style gold! Thank you for the fun and informative content!
