My Grandpa once told me that he stopped wearing hats regularly in the mid 60’s because car roofs got so low, he had to take them off every time he got in and out of one and it became an inconvenience. I doubt he was the only one who felt that way.

I think there’s a lot of truth in it; I have to take off a fedora to get in and out of a car. On the other hand, baseball-style caps are pretty ubiquitous here in the USA. They don’t get in the way. And for the deeply stupid, they can be decorated with “MAGA.”
Another, better President (could there be a worse one?) is often credited with the end of the classic fedora: John F. Kennedy. He was the first US President to abandon hats. His wife Jackie was of course rarely seen without one, until years later. Narrow-brimmed hats for men were still popular into the mid 60s, see Don Draper and early James Bond (like Goldfinger).
Personally, I miss fedoras. They’re not much protection, and they blow away in any slight wind - but they’re cool.

I used to have a straw hat that was just perfect for the summer. I wore it everywhere. I even bought a hat pin from a lady at the local farmer's market. It did an amazing job at keeping my hat from flying away whenever the wind picked up. That is until I wore it to the beach and a really strong wind blew my much beloved straw hat off my head straight out into the Pacific Ocean while leaving me with the hat pin still attached to my head. I searched in vain for another hat like it, to no avail. I hope the mermaids are enjoying my hat.

Elegant attire doesn’t always have to be seen by others, it’s just as valid to have them only for yourself, because you enjoy them. And I would say half of elegance anyway is in one’s demeanor.
I wear simple but comfortable house dresses, and slap on a lovely vintage apron when I cook. It’s the little things.
You could wear elegant undergarments with your work clothes and some high quality socks/stockings because you’re worth it. Maybe trick your bike out with some accessories or save up for a vintage one. Decorate your inner space and garden with things that remind you that you are elegant and lovely.

So I have another theory: the end of hats coincided with the advent of tan=attractive in western culture. In the mid 1870, working women wore bonnets because paleness was hottest despite working in the Midwest American sun, in part because rich fashionable ladies never had to work outside. Then by the 1970s the “Malibu Barbie” coincided the advent of blue-collar work moving inside (call centers, typists, etc), and tanning had the connotation of having time to lay about by the pool. We made the purpose of hats more redundant.
    That said, I love hats.

    • @nommh
      @nommh 4 роки тому +16

Tanning is an important aspect. It was Coco Chanel in the 1920ies or 1930ies that popularised the tan. Malibu barbie was a sign that tan had become the norm.

i’m not so sure about that. contrary to popular belief, being tan was fashionable before the 1970s because is showed that you were wealthy enough to vacation. also, the popularisation of baseball caps and trucker hats was in the 70s, so it seemed they still wanted to shade their face from the sun. idk though, i wasn’t alive and i’m not a fashion expert, it just seems like they became too formal.

Karolina: Imagine a 16 year old wearing a hat
School dresscode: not on my watch
(Edit: so anyone wondering, I’m at an American school, and it’s so the staff can easily identify you as a student apart from a school shooter)
Edit-edit: most of the comments are pretty cool and I thought they deserved to be here as well; Mallory Rivers brought up a great point about how they’ve been banned since she was in school a while back and the justification was how hats can be used for gang identification. This makes sense as hats had been banned long before school shooting were relatively common (≈90s). In elementary school (ages 5-11), I remember the reasoning as head lice.
Another asks if this comment was satire, but unfortunately not. Tying into above, my school definitely cites this as the reason as it had been shot up three years ago by a former student. And we had had a different school shooting in our county a couple decades back.

I am a big Film Noir fan and this brings to mind an image from a scene in a recently watched film where the character puts his hat on a hat peg when entering a room. Probably a frequent little action in a lot of those films. The fedoras seem to loom large in "Cry of the City" looking great on Victor Mature and even his kind of dopey detective partner. But now come to think of it, the villain of the movie, Richard Conte, did not wear a hat in that movie.

It was the best day ever. I stopped wearing them so much as an adult. First of all, I live in a hot place, but secondly, every time I wore one of my gorgeous little pillboxes or tiny 1940s/1950s hats that perched at an angle on the side of my head, people would ask me when I was serving drinks, and when the flight would land. By the 1990s, basically the only people still wearing smart little hats were flight attendants. I miss my hats, but have grown used to dressing simply. Also cars just meant people spend less time outside on average. Prior to the car most people walked or biked together most places or wait at the station for the train so one needed a good brimmed hat. But now you walk a short distance to your car, drive, and then walk a short distance to your destination. Hat's have lost the element of practicality in that environment.

All my hats have a wide brim, one is straw another is cancer council approved (my fave) and I have a cpl of baseball caps. I guess the heat issue in Oz is why, as we were all raised with a "No hat, No play" policy in school. Here in Arizona I wear a hat every day. While I try to make it at least somewhat fashionable, it's not a fashion statement. It's to keep the sun out of my eyes, the glare out of my eyes and the heat of the sun off my head. My head appreciates the shade. If some think I'm trying to be trendy, too f'in bad. There's really no 'fashion' any more anyway, just trends. So why not wear what works? Even when it rains a hat is helpful...especially if one wears glasses! So with an eye to whatever fashion might be, it's utilitarian. I favor straw fedoras or planters for summer, wear a beaver or rabbit fedora when it's wet or cold in winter....and narrow brim fedoras or trucker caps when doing outside work where brim width is an issue. Since we don't have hurricanes here, a good fit negates most problems with wind, even with a relatively broad-brimmed hat from the Yucatan. Of course since most people hardly ever venture forth from the air-conditioning, and hat's are a hassle in a car I certainly don't expect it to become a trend. But for Arizona a hat just makes sense, if one is outside much at all. If one wants to bake their brain, they should feel perfectly free to do so....not my brain. :) Stetson, Sterkowski and Snap-Lok, from Arizona. Chow!

While by the earlier 18th century the styles of Beu Brummell and other such dandies had already begun to come into fashion. Said style was the birth of classic menswear as it is seen today and although different had links to the early 1900s, white tie for example was practically unchanged. Being black in a mostly white city, she would have stood out already, and her clothing made her even more distinctive. She looked like royalty. It was like seeing a tropical flower in a field of wheat.
This same town had a hat shop that sold hats that were all hand made individually and imported from Italy and France. A restaurant a few doors down had a grease fire, and the smoke traveled through the ventilation system that was shared by the other stores in the strip mall, and all those beautiful hats were ruined. One of the key historical events which ended the wearing of hats for women was the Second Vatican Council. It ended the centuries old custom of requiring women to cover their hair in church. Once the Catholics ended the custom the other Western denominations followed suit. The reason why European royal weddings still have a display of hats is the conservative nature of royal weddings in broadly adhering to traditional ideals and that includes the women covering their hair in church. The latin countries have a variation with the lace matilla covering the hair as at Spanish royal weddings.

I think since kids spend most of their time in school (well, they did before anyway) they grow up without wearing them so when they do wear them it's uncomfortable. Also, since we spend time in cars more often than we did before the 1960's it doesn't really make sense to wear them because our heads aren't as exposed to the elements anymore.

SPOILER: According to Monty Python's film "Meaning of Life":
The meaning of life can be reduced to two fundamental concepts.
    1. People aren't wearing enough hats.
    2. Matter is energy. In the universe there are many energy fields which we cannot normally perceive. Some energies have a spiritual source which act upon a person's soul. However this soul does not exist ab initio as orthodox Christianity teaches, it has to be brought into existence by a process of self guided observation. However this is rarely achieved owing to man's unique ability to be distracted from spiritual matters by everyday trivia.

"I tried wearing hats outside a few times and was bullied" really drives home that the answer is *not* increased tolerance of differing styles of dress allowing people to dress more casually, much as we'd like to think it is.
I remember in late 2019 I came down with a bad cold and wore a facemask at work for a couple days to avoid infecting others- I wouldn't say I got bullied but I got several questioning comments that, as someone who's only ever worn t-shirts and pants gave me a sense of how restrictive modern fashion sense is. Quite an interesting experience.
For women's fashion it occurs to me that a lot of stereotypical modern women's "look" is in well kempt hair worn down, I wonder if the invention of new hair products played a role in allowing people to show off their hair which outcompeted hats. You don’t need to take it off to drive. Wider brimmed hats will sorta crash into the headrest of the car sete and you have to take it off. The whole point is to keep the sun out of your eyes wile you drive so you have only the option of peaked caps. Now there are nicer alternatives like flat caps and newsboy caps, but they could just be to warm or even bulky for the situation. My dad used to wear lots of hats when I was a kid (I was kinda facinated by them) but when we finally bought a car and didn’t just walk everywhere they gradually gave way to baseball caps.

So it lingered for a while, but there's so many factors today that make the habit unlikely to return (people don't want to hide from the sun, people don't need it to protect hair, we just generally don't have much formality in dressing for anything).

I remember in the late 50's and early 60's as a kid trying on my Grandmothers hats. She still wore them. I also remember the excitement of going to the department store with her to shop for a new one. I couldn't wait until I was old enough to wear them. By the time I was, they were gone. I still regret that.

The death of men's hats is a matter of pure economics. Restaurants, theaters, and other places that people congregate can no longer afford to hire hat check girls. Men can't get by wearing their hats in these places, and the hat becomes just another damned nuisance. If, for instance, a man goes into a restaurant with a hat, what does he do with it? There is no place to leave it, and he can't just leave it on his head. It's not worth the bother. Of course, this may not be an issue in the local yacht club. But for the average Joe, hats are just too big a nuisance to bother with.

My dad has to wear hats because of his vitiligo (he gets awful scratchy rashes from sunburn) and says exactly this! He has a beautiful wide-brimmed felt Akubra and a shorter brimmed Stetson that he rarely wears because they get grubby from being on the back of a chair or a cafe table. As much as he likes the hats he wears, they're also a huge hassle.

It has to with cars. You can't wear anything with a brim when you're in a car because the head support would bump into it and push it forward over your eyes. This would be an especial nuisance if you are driving. The other reason to ditch the hat is that when you drive, you are not spending so much time hanging about outdoors, so covering your head for warmth becomes less necessary. Before anyone says that most people in cities use public transport, let's just remember that fashion is set by people with money.

We had cars in the 1910s onward. What happened was that in the mid-1960s, there started to be a real, honest concern for auto safety. Think Nader's "Unsafe At Any Speed." Up until then, auto manufacturers were happy to accommodate hats in their car designs. But higher headrests were safer in a crash. The engineers won this argument, and we either went hatless or wore hats that let us drive, like a ballcap.
