  • Just like taking care of our teeth, oral hygiene, would be considered a good grooming habit; taking care of our dogs' teeth is also part of a good grooming routine.
Many people do not realize that its the mechanical act of brushing rather than the toothpaste that produces all the benefits. Dr Helen Evans from Chandler, Arizona says that no matter how good the toothpaste or gel is, it will not break up the biofilm (plaque) on the dog's teeth. You have to get in there and actually brush them.
There are other options if brushing your dog's teeth is not an option. You can use dental chews or dental toys, or even use an additive to their water. However, the mechanical act of brushing the teeth is the most effective way to keep them clean and healthy.
Here are a few suggestions for safe chew toys/treats:
Safe Toys/Chews: Traditional Rawhide* (Good Lovin” Traditional Compressed Rawhide Bone Dog Chew, 9-inch, 3.2 OZ by Good Lovin’: $7.99 - amzn.to/2LQ7YHY),
    Granulated Rawhide, Rope Toys*,
Greenies (Greenies Original TEENIE Dental Dog Treats, 12 oz. Pack (43 Treats) by Greenies - $15.99: amzn.to/2NFJH9j ; Greenies Original Regular Size Dog Dental Chews - 36 Ounces 36 Treats by Greenies - $33.99: amzn.to/2C9dEgB) or other consumable dental chews,
Rubber Toys (KONG Classic Dog Toy, Large, Red by KONG: $12.99 - amzn.to/2N9RwXB), and Plush Toys*.
*always supervise when using these products. They can be a choking hazard if your dog tries to eat pieces of the toy/rawhide.
