Hi Everyone, a lot of people have been viewing this video recently so it’s something you’re interested in! If you need any other study material relating to knots or Arboriculture generally, please comment here and I’ll do my best to film a guide and post back asap! Thanks for watching, Rich 👍
Old guy here. I like doing the work around the house. This three knot system is the very way now can safety be on the roof. Though my wife still doesn't like the idea. I assured her I not into flying.
I’m nearly60(ex coal miner)Decided I need a new challenge! So decided to become a climber!I,v bought all the gear!Unfortunately,Covid-19 has stopped all training for now,but that gives me more time to learn the craft!(& oh boy do I need it!Thank you so much for your videos(Subscribed,)I,ll need all the help I can get!😱🥴👍
Taking my City and Guilds for Airiell rescue and climbing in the Morning its now 9pm" the night before assesment.. and ive had trouble all week with the 3 knot system... I kept getting it wrong.. thank you for this video has helped me greatly... the sheer amount of knots this course has is daunting. Great video nicely done. 👍👍👍
Hey Richard, alot of people over here getting new saddles 4 hunting. It took me 10 weeks 2 get mine. I will be doing quite a bit of arborist work with mine since I have oakwilt & I need 2 climb & cut so my fencelines don't take a hard hit. Your video is very self explanatory. Thanks 4 your input. I am now a subscriber.
Thank you, Richard. I know all three knots well but have never seen them used in that manner. If I need to go up my mast (sailboat) in an emergency, I would consider this. Of course, I WILL practice it a lot!
Good video, when I started climbing before Merrist wood ,we used to make our own loops and splice them ,3ply ropes using a prussic knot and splice the loop end ..That was before legislation about climbing ropes. But when multiplat ropes came about they were a God send.Unfortunalty rules came in too late for my friend who will using bowie 36ft up ,willow barber chaired and fell and paralysed him from chest down..Best rules ever 6ft off ground have to harness.1985
Thank you for your suggested combination knot. This could be improved imo… since learning knot tying is largely a visual activity, leave the talking out. There are exceptions for knot names or terms like pinch or double or perhaps making a suggestion of what application a knot is best suited for. I hope you consider this a positive comment.
Hey Richard, I suppose an Alpine Butterfly would work too although may tighten a little when in use. Could also tie it mid-rope much easier than a bowline!
William Wilcox Interesting suggestion, one of my favourite knots though! Used it a lot for rope-access climbing years ago! Thanks for your comment, Rich.
There are a lot of knots one could use instead. The clove hitch is traditional from what I've seen. It keeps the system tighter than any loop, and it's easy to adjust the length of your tail if you unload the system.
That's a somewhat curious comment. I expect most people viewing such a video desire to tie the knot properly. Why would someone want to learn a knot without already having a use in mind?
Yes, if you make the tail longer and instead of a stopper knot you put another Blake's back higher on the other line, the system can be adjusted so that it tends itself on the ascent with no extra work needed, you can focus on pulling yourself up instead. It's a bit more knot work, a lot less grunt work.
I'm a certified arborist and I've been climbing trees for 22+ years while I understand that people love the Blake's hitch I absolutely despise it. Is not only messy ugly knot but it doesn't do anything that the two and two prussic doesn't do .
Thanks for your comment and I take the point, here in the UK it was part of students’ assessment at the time of posting that they knew these 3 knots. This was the original reason for the channel 🤓
Thanks for the suggestion Fred M. The conventional '3 knot system' for tree climbing includes the 'blakes hitch' as its friction knot, that being said I'll have a play with the 'Rolling Hitch' as part of the system and maybe review it? Thanks again, Rich.

Hi Joseph, thanks for your comments :-)
You are a good teacher. Thanks.

Very good!! Just a little wordy.
Not the first to say that ha ha, duly noted 👍

Brilliant video thankyou
Could a butterfly knot work instead of the bowline?
It could. Theoretically a bowline is stronger. I prefer a clove hitch over both for this system.

how much is ropes? I aksed my mum to buy me some but she said its to dear.
Ive cut an old carpet into strips and practising with that.
Would an alpine suffice?
Tyvm
I'd like to see this used in a practical situation so I can know what it's good for.

I like the anchor hitch here.

Or figure 8 instead of the bowline
Whenever you teach a knot you should tell its common uses, why its food to know that knot, and when you would use ir.

Knots aren't food, you can't eat them.

I agree well done
👍👍👍
where is thitd???
The stopper is the third knot.
Awesome
👌👌👍👍
I'd like to see this in action.
ibeat theleaves I’ll film myself climbing with the system tomorrow for you 👍
@@RichieHughes Did you ever film this? Didn't find it on your channel.
Its a blake hitch.
Waa, am deed.
Rolling hitch instead of your Blakes hitch? More simple I would think...
