I know that the old close season was far from perfect, and carp and tench usually spawn in early summer (in the north), but having grown up with a spring close season, I just can not bring myself to fish in April and May, other than for river trout. Perhaps I am just old fashioned. For one thing, it is nice to have a beginning and end (first day and last day) of a season. It is up to the individual, I know (as clubs and fishery owners are far too weak or greedy to impose a close season), but when I talk to non-angling friends, acquaintances and work colleagues about fishing, I find it very difficult to explain, and justify a field sport that does not have a close season for its quarry. I feel like I am trying to defend the indefensible when asked about stillwater fish that are pressured, with very efficient baits and rigs, and multiple rods, round the clock for 365 days a year, especially on small waters. There is also the issue of disturbance of waterfowl at the main nesting time. I am not criticising individual anglers, I am just interested in what other people think and how they would justify the situation that we currently have.

I have been saying for years we should bring back the mandatory close season on stillwaters. Looks like Coronavirus just has for 2020.
