Prof Mariapia Degli-Esposti FAA FAHMS studies the delicate balance between immune response and regulation. Her work has expanded our understanding of natural killer cells-revealing their influence on autoimmunity and their role in limiting inflammation.
Her team at Monash University developed innovative disease models based on long-term cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection to better understand the complex relationships between a virus and the immune system. Her work has also uncovered the importance of strain-specific antibodies in protecting against viral reactivation and disease.
