Mr Rob I have question. I broke one of the screws on my cover. I accidentally heard 120 ft lbs when it was inch pounds. Would one bolt missing cause a leak?
That is 120 INCH pounds...Not 60 FOOT pounds in tourqe.Very different rating system.Inch pounds is very light tourqe ratings.Foot pounds is medium to large tourqe ratings.
What tool is used to take the pulley off the engine and put it back on, or more specific off the crankshaft. My other quandary is what tool is used to turn the crankshaft, without stripping the 5/8 bolt to acquire T.D.C.?
Allen McKinney technically, the paper gasket SHOULD seal it by itself. The problem is after years of use the mating surfaces become slightly uneven or develop minor pits on the sealing surface. Also, the use for the MINOR coating is to hold the gasket and bolt holes on the gasket in place while you are bolting it up, plus it assists in sealing any imperfections. I hope this helps.
Hey David im just about to install a brand new timing chain on my sbc 350 but the engines still in a pickup i noticed the timing cover has a lip that goes onto the oil pan and was wondering what would be the easiest way to install the cover back on should i just loosen all the bolts on the oil pan? Thanks ahead of time.
No one needs to watch you apply RTV for any length of time. No one needs to see you putting each bolt in. You waste people's time. Thumbs down. Go away.
That was as waist of my time as anything I seen on here Do it in a 4#4 Chevy from start to finish I noticed you thought you were being funny at the end for waisting our time
this man is a wealth of knowledge
Love these videos. Helped a ton with my 355 project. Thanks
Great video. But what about the timing tab? I'm having a hell of a time finding one that sits tight to the harmonic balancer..
how about with the engine in the car? With the oil pan on.
Take the engine out
Take front bolts out of the pan hope for the best
@@mariolt4940 I tried that, didn't work. I ended up dremelling a seal, fitting it in and sealing it with ultra silicone.
This what I’m getting done to my skylark timing chain heater pump in at tie rods inner/outer.

A little lube on the shaft seal always helps too.
Could’ve put on the bottom seal
120 in pounds? The damper 5/8 bolt is torqued at 60 pounds?

Where is the timming tab?
does it matter that the gasket is stripe facing engine or gasket stripe facing out ? Which way? does it matter?
You're a bad man very informative thank you
Should you use RTV with a cork gasket?
Where does the timing tab go?
U didn't put the rubber piece on?
Wouldn t you put the balancer on before tightening the cover down ?
How will you put the cover on if the balancer is in the way?
I mean the cover would already be on but not tight then put the balancer on so it's through the seal then tighten cover when the seal is centered.
Smart guy, thanks for the videos
Do you need a larger timing chain cover for double rollers? I have a 71 302 I'm going to do it on.
Kevin Horan some. I'm looking at a 2 piece timing cover so I can access the chain in the future and the cast aluminum vs won't clear a double roller.
Yes a stock will fit but you'll have have the block relieved by machine shop
I never understood why use a paper gasket with silicone. why not just use the silicone by its self?
