- Let's start off 2011 on the right foot, with corporate espionage! It's Stage 4 of Superman 64, where we break into Lexcorp and steal sheets of paper.
If you would like to read the full interview with Eric Caen, click this link: www.protonjon.c...
(Warning: Site has since gone down and relaunched as a shop. I'm gonna move the interview to a new site soon, but in the meanwhile, it's viewable thanks to the Internet Archive - web.archive.or... )
Special Thanks to Anatotitan for drawing that awesome art piece, and if you want her to draw something for you, she is taking commissions over at The Speed Gamers: store.thespeedg... You can also see her VG Flash series at her UA-cam channel, / neonpteranodon
"Don't get me started on the end of this game, ugh, we're gonna get to that later."
ARE WE, JON?
No
He is intending to continue the Superman LP after Yoshi's Island is done. If you'll remember, part of the reason for that LP was for him to get back into the swing of solo commentary.
Yoshi'a island hasn't had a new episode in around a month. ProtonJon doesn't want to play this game
Pika Chu And now he's beaten it, so next up is the rest of Superman 64. Either that or the bonus episode of Aria of Sorrow that Jon said he might do, showing off the rest of the souls, the boss rush mode, and the special weapons you can get from it.
"He walked into my fist". LMAO 😂😂😂
I just realized that the thought of Superman "running over" his enemies makes him seem more like a car.
Superman: "Beep beep I’m a Jeep!"
A car that flies lol
I figured it out
If you look at the luthor puzzle, when Jon goes to the L, it changes all letters
So
L changes 6
U changes 5
T changes 4
H changes 3
O changes 2
R changes 1
And since the buttons are randomized, that is why luthor is spelled the wrong way
hah i was gonna point this out but figured someone else already did
Unfortunately you still kinda have to trial and error to figure out which one changes all 6 vs last 5/4/3/2/1. Because say you have LTHLRL, then the 6, 3, and 1 all say L until you change their letters.
Lex Luthor's crimes: Manslaughter, Grand Theft Cake and Jaywalking.
And that's terrible.
Thank you, TV tropes!
+mastrvidman15 Don't forget he doesn't wash his hands.
...
1. Is that even canon?
2. Including that would break the Rule of Three.
Jackson Mathews I meant the hand washing.
These videos are super high quality, all those little opening bits really shows this guy goes the extra mile for his videos. This deserves more views.
Y'know why they're so high quality? Jon comes from the Something Awful forums, a forum known as one of the origins of the video let's play. The people on there expect high quality, and so, high quality tends to come out, whether it's through comedy, information, or narrative. If you want, there's a decent bevy of video Lps (about 900) and screenshot Lps (close to 500) at lparchive.org where they archive something awful let's plays.
Last time I checked intentionally cutting the brakes on your parents car isn't manslaughter it's murder lol
"I'm gonna get to that (The Ending of Superman 64) later."
-ProtonJon 2011
Caught the flash image at 5:05. It's just Kevin Spacey, with his mouth open, yelling "WRONNNGG!!!:
"Rings are only in the tutorial levels"
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAno.
I need a "Lex Wins" T-shirt.
Go make it yourself on *insert website here*
I'm glad these character bios are here because I don't know shit about Superman
I know some things, but 90% of what I know is from my brother.
Well the entire game is "based on" Superman: The Animated Series, so that's where Jon is pulling all of the information in the bios. Just in case you were wondering.
I love the Deadly Premonition song at the beggining
"He even got elected President of the United States in one comic series, which really begs the question, 'What the hell is wrong with people in comic books?'"
Well, five and a half years later, we're not too far off from that happening in real life...
except our billionaire isn't nicely dressed charismatic or smart
Chemcane Actually, he _must_ be pretty charismatic if people are somehow buying into whatever he says.
Evan Peskoff people are dumb
Which really begs the question, "What the hell is wrong with people in real life?"
+Evan Peskoff people are only buying into what he was saying because there retarted or they feel they have no other choice.
You gonna wash your hands?
No! 'Cause I'm evil.
Ahhh... DCAU references...
Well after that intro I kind of want to see a remake where they actually do what they wanted to do when making the game. XD
"He was even elected President of the United States at one point! Which begs the question...what the hell is wrong with people in comic books?"
Clearly, they're just like us.
Lmao yeah that storyline is..... far more believable after the hell that was the last four years
Honestly... I'd take Lex Luthor for president. Better than the candidates we have.
There is actually a movie where that happens. It's called Superman and Batman: Public Enemies
The funny irony being that lex was actually a pretty good president in the comics. He genuinly took his job seriously
12:23
come on Jon, stop beating around the bush
That mirror world may be my favorite glitch of all time.
Jon: "Lex even got elected President of the United States in one series which makes you wonder what the hell is wrong with people in comic books?"
2016 Americans: Hold my beer
Don't you love it when reality proves just how insane things can actually get?
Jon, did you ever think that Hervé Caen and Eric Caen were kind of in the same boat as Walt Disney and his brother Roy Disney? One was in more of the creating side while the other was more in the marketing side. Pretty interesting.
"Lex Luthor… is an asshole."
That still makes me laugh.
Same. lol
What's with the forty cakes thing? Is that some kinda reference to some counting book with Superman or somethin'?
+GokensLetsPlays Basically, here's a pic of the page:
static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/40cakes_4996.jpg
GeatMaster
...I can't believe there's a Superman counting b-
...wait, it makes more sense than it needs to.
***** I can't believe lex luthor couldn't just buy the cakes.
+GokensLetsPlays well it's more a DC comics counting book but yes
MrX626
Thanks for the info, though!
Sorry, something happened with the site a while back that I'm trying to get straightened out. The blog itself is fine, but it'll pop up about that for the next little while.
What's with the 1/2 frame of Lex screaming WRONNNGG!! ?
Jason Phillips It's a meme from Superman Returns (where Kevin Spacey played as Lex).
Hey, what video is that exactly? I've seen a bunch of people mention that AVGN mentioned the interview but I've never found where exactly he mentioned it.
I know I’m late to the party but to try to access that Eric interview brought up a 404. If someone has it archived somewhere please let me know
Description's been updated, sorry about that!
@@ProtonJon wow that was a fascinating read, thank you!
I am very impressed by the interview you did with Eric Caen. I was expecting it to go pretty bad but it went quite nicely.
Almost 10 years later, at least Deadly Premonition is a cult classic now.
The goofy Deadly Premonition theme in the intro made me laugh 😃 😀 😄
Executive Meddling! Bane of Comic Book Heroes and Other Things!
Very easy to say, oh he's just shifting the blame towards Warner. Considering how badly they handled the Justice League movie I 100% believe Warner sabotaged Superman 64 with unreasonable demands.
one of the best presented videos I've seen you seem professional but genuine and mange to keep it clean but funny hard to do good job =D and thanks
"What's wrong with people in comic books?"
Listen Jon...things happen. Maybe the comic books weren't too far off...
The texture on the walls at 20:59 is the Widnows XP 3D pipes screensaver.
Quality work :)
I was still in high school when this first started, now I'm about to graduate with a bachelors degree XD
And its takeing this long for superman 64? John is putting more time and effort into this game then the developers look like they did.
Had this playlist saved forever and I'm finally getting around to watching it. It's weird knowing he doesn't upload anymore.
In some comics, Superman has a pocket in the lining of his cape, so it's not as gross as him, say, shoving them into his briefs. :P
Seriously, this is some high quality gameplay. The edits with background information are also very impressive, the interview with the developer astonishing. Good work, I subscribe.
Lex: Are you tired of the game?
Me: Yes
Uhh... your comment makes no sense. How am I "whoring out all the money" when I don't ask for money or donations? How am I putting "little effort" into my videos, when I contacted the producer of the game, who hasn't given out interviews about Superman 64 in the past? How am I ripping off "the thousands of other people who did this" when I've been doing this for over 5 years and was part of the first group of LPers on Something Awful?
The humour one's probably the only point I'll give you.
"the licensor refused to let Superman kick “real” people…"
...and then they clearly got over it because Injustice is a thing...
I can understand not liking the bios, especially of a character that's well known like Lex, but how exactly is adding content like that pandering? Also, who is legitimately going to think I'm "learned" by talking about comic book characters of all things?
In the interview Eric said that "Rings are only in the “tutorial” levels." Did he ever actually play the game???
@ssj2mysterio33 How come?
4:47 yeah, haha..... no way we’d get someone like Lex as President of the US....... can only be told through comics, that’s way too funny hahaha.......
*sweats profusely*
I'm curious, where you playing this on a real N64, because no matter what emulator or settings I try, this game always slows down really bad at certain parts which doesn't seem to happen in this video...
Anyone saw Lex shouting "WROOONG!" somewhere at 5:00?
Just out of curiosity, what's that song used for the interview in the first 2 minutes of video before the game begins?
"Lex was even elected president of the united states, which begs the question 'what the hell is wrong with people in comic books'"
Fast forward a few years...
I really like the additional info you provide at the beginning of all these episodes
Why aren't you continuing this game? You stopped playing the game after Stage 7
The fist episode of his Yoshi's island lets play explains why
+chenzo55BETA It broke, yeah
+chenzo55BETA
Or you could just tell us.
In a livestream he did a few years ago(just a few days before the most recent episode was released) he mentioned that the playthrough was a unbearable chore for him
Is there anywhere that the interview transcript is still available? The link leads to a page not found error.
im rewatching this after seeing the new episode that finally came out so uhhh... yeah
The site had been neglected for years, so I repurposed it as a shop for stream merch. I've updated the video description now to contain an Internet Archive link to the post, so that should work now. Sorry about that, didn't realize it at the time that the link died!
The walls at 20:49... Windows 98 screensaver, anyone?
cool seris man. i find most regular lets plays very boring, but not this. Very informative and interesting to wwatch even during the gameplay. subscribed. are all the lets plays like this on your channel?
All of his newer ones are, they just are not updated frequently. Superman 64 is still going on to this day lol. He's definitely worth being subscribed to, because when he uploads is always a pleasant surprise.
With these chucklefucks in charge I am not surprised that Interplay lost the rights to the Fallout MMO. Thank non-existant god.
+RaithSienar Your comment is a shining example of accuracy, civility, objectivity and proper English.
I agree, failure is a horrible, inexcusable vice. The Caen brothers clearly had no reason for the problems with their games and their business and are horrible, useless people. Also, dead on with your 'passive aggressive' diagnosis.
LW
Developers that are competent might occasionally make a bad game. Developers that are incompetent make something like Superman 64.
I'm afraid the difference escapes me. Unless you're saying Superman 64 isn't a bad game.
LW
Superman 64 isn't just some bad game, it is the worst game ever made. No developer that had their names attached to it should even be allowed around a computer for fear that they might unleash such utter incompetence upon the world again.
I read the interview, and the main thing that got my attention was: "Have you personally beaten Superman 64?", answers "during the two years of its development".
“He even was elected for president of the United States in one series which begs the question what the hell is wrong with people in comic books”
Honestly not too different from people irl knowing the US’s political climate now 😢
This was the first ProtonJon video I ever saw... 1 year later... My only favorite and my favorite LPer.
I don't like the guy. Seems all he was concerned about (in the interview) was pointing out that the faults of Superman 64, were due to "politics", not as a result of their own mistakes. Then he kept pushing Interplay's new business schemes.
Checking the Wikipedia page on Interplay shows that since the Titus acquisition, there have been many questionable business practices, and it seems they're only interested in making cheap games for a quick buck.
To be honest, I thought Interplay had long since been out of business, but it looks like they're still kicking because they've been taking advantage of their old IP's that Craem had nothing to do with. Like relaunching a studio that he killed himself? What's up with that?
I can't blame him for saying it though -- while how much politics affected development may be debatable, it DEFINITELY played some role. This is probably the poor guy's first chance to let his side of the story be heard, as the general public only knows what they can see, allowing political issues to slip through the cracks.
Every time I see Superman's flying animation all I can think of is the MST3K crew singing Pumaman's flying theme.
"Pumaman, he flies like a moron!"
I read the interview he blames the entire game on licences and "politics" you made a shit game titus it's glitched to hell
Chances are that Titus was also rushed to get it made on time, hence the glitches. When surviving as a game developer against bankruptcy, going against the wishes of an IP holder is the last thing you want to do.
I think the lack of taking responsibility and the lack of explanation from titus says volumes if they really had that many isssues wouldn't there be some indication. Heck even the producer said that rings are only in the tutorial levels did he even play the game he produced?
On one hand, the leaked beta version of the game actually shows off that the game, while better, was not ever going to be amazing. It would have likely ended up somewhere between "mediocre" and "decent" if WB and DC hadn't stuck their grubby hands all over everything. On the other hand. let's take a look at what actually happened: the devs got 75% done with the game, and were ready to start "crunch time" to move from beta to launch candidate, and suddenly WB and DC come in and make them redo almost EVERY STAGE, with more than half their development time gone and the engine not optimized yet. WB and DC are clearly the villains in this situation
***** the dev even said in the interview they didn't have to scrap anything or redo the project at all.
Yeah it kind of annoyed me when he kept blaming everything.
I like how you inform us with details about the game and the superman franchise.
The interview is cool and the developer looks like a nice guy. But what if his telling lies about how DC and Warner Bros limited them and that the game was too ambitious for its time to hide the fact that he made a bad job with the game so he tries to put the blame on somebody else to make his reputation look better? I would do this too if made one of the worst games of all time. I'm 95% sure that this is not the case but maybe it's true. Who knows?
Considering how corrupted WB and DC probably are when it comes to this kind of stuff I wouldn't be surprised if it was actually them causing problems.
SDH Assassin
Yep. They're almost as corrupt as marvel, what with them some how managing to steal the money for a movie filled with obscure Cosmic Marvel heroes that were never really all that popular and even less effective at protecting the milky way than the Guardians of Oa or, God help you, the Nova Corp, instead of using it to fund movies for characters that are, like Black Panther. :P
Well, this comment's definitely dated... :)
Okay, one thing I must say I like is how when you glitch and know you're done for, you smoothly switch mental states from informative to messing around. It just stops all momentum on the intelligence train and takes a break at lollygagging station. That's one part of your personality that I find pretty awesome.
oh god, the guys grunts when they get knocked out make me laugh too much. "GAWGH!!" it makes me so happy for seemingly no reason. XD
Thanks for doing all this extra research. It's always fun to learn background details behind projects.
14:34
😂
Laughed to hard at this!!
..he didn't even try to glitch this one
Your commentary is pretty funny man. I will watch again. When he got stuck in the floor; that was golden!
Honestly, I'm loving the intros. Even an obvious character like lex, I didn't know much about. I knew he was basically the ultimate villain for superman, and is very sane on comic book standards (comparing him to, for instance, the joker), but I didn't know everything about how he controlled the city and so on. Keep the bios coming, as well as the introductions; this episode in particular is my favorite because of it's interesting intro.
Love the use of the Deadly Premonition song.
I have to say, you've put a lot of work into this let's play. It's got interviews and factoids and everything. Good job, man. That's quality.
I think in this episode in particular it looks exceptionally bad because of the bio kicking in right after gameplay starts. In the other episodes with bios, it isn't as bad since it's spaced out better.
Jon, quick question? Do you think the NDA is still active now?
"I don't even want to know where Superman has pockets..."
Inside of his cape, Jon. Read Superman #701.
Could someone tell me the name of the song that plays at the beginning of the video?
I noticed the "WRONNNGG!!!" at 5:05. :D
Also, I have two questions:
How far are you in work on stage 5 of Superman 64?
What was your previous work that you said took 84 hours a week?
Jon, I wanted to read the whole interview but Google Chrome informed me the site was infected with malware :( are you having problems with your blog?
Love the Katamari Damacy sound effect everytime the glitch counter goes up.
This would make for a hilarous movie, if they made a movie out of it... even more so if they included the glitches.
@ProtonJonSA Good to see that you still take notice of the comments on your old videos, not that many UA-camrs can be bothered doing that nowadays :)
Oh my gosh. You referenced "forty cakes". And that's awesome.
Jon, I really like your voice and the way you narrate. :D It makes this game so incredibly bearable. And thank you so much for sharing that interview you had with Eric Caen. We now know the truth. And it still hurts. :| Keep up the great work!
Superman: "Thanks Charlie That's a Slap on the Back for you"
*Punch*
Loving the part where Superman can't even walk up the stairs in Lex's Office. It cracks me up everytime xD.
i commend you good sir, you have the patience of a saint. when i watch this game i can feel my brain melting, i dont even want to imagine what its like to play it.
Oh wow, I never realized it until after Supergreatfriends lets play of Deadly Premonition, you used that casual song. I love it, I sometimes think of it when I'm out shopping or something.
Weird. Whenever I click on your thingy, an invisible Halo-related vid pops up somewhere on the page, while the Superman vid continues to play without going to the 3:32 link.
I think the more reasonable explanation for the skybox is that it was supposed to be a unique skybox and the picture was a placeholder, but due to the issues during development, they never did implement a new skybox for the outside view.
I am going to cry in a pit knowing that all of the games that Eric mentioned were canceled
Nice use of the Deadly Premonition OST there!
That whole “water under the level” thing is something I’ve seen before... When I was playing Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood one time, I don’t even remember what I was doing, but I fell through the floor and landed in water that stretched across all of Rome...Ezio was pretty much stuck swimming underneath the city.
ProtonJonSA what game would you call worse, this game or SONIC THE HEDGEHOG for 360 and PS3?
Jon: Then again I could just be imagining it
*elevator music plays*
Text: You totally were
LOL
at 14:34, all I could think of was the glitch gremlin saying "I put him through the floor" over and over lol
I find it funny that Jon says Metallo twice here, and then later he shows a glitch where you can fight two Metallos at once.
Dude, where'd you find that music in the start of the video (The Super Mario World remix)? That was such a good remix (Before anyone bites off my head for asking that instead of checking the description, take a look for yourself in the description. I checked already)!
Deadly Premonition music in the background... Instantly subscribed.
Can die during cutscenes and when you win. Kaizo! Kaizo! Kaizo!
That's a pretty kick ass way to word it, thank you so much.
For anyone wondering, 3 colors with no repeats means there's 6 possible combinations.
Also, I love the new advert they've made for uprising, it's hilarious!
