TOP TIP: Use headphones and you will hear Nicky Grist reading the pacenotes in the left ear, and Ford Focus RS WRC rally car raw sound in the right ear. 2:00 slow bumpy rough section, 2:34 rocky dry river crossing, 3:24 bad bumps, 4:02 road splits and McRae goes right, 4:24 Flat out top speed, 4:50 spotter helicopter warms McRae of a public traffic on the road, 5:32 flat out maximum attack on the corner after this long straight, 6:07 getting hot and trying to adjust air vents, 6:35 steep jump down, and car nose dives, 6:55 McRae talks to Grist about the pacenotes, 7:08 very bumpy dry river crossing with rocks, 8:44 McRae talks again, 8:53 bad deep ruts, 9:09 fast over the ruts now. Colin McRae stops in this stage after the steering is damaged, and then the clutch.
i have driven this stage, be it some years later...the commitment through the stage, and especially at 5:50 is ridiculous. I graded that right hander as a 4...and he is absolutely foot down there!
This is the most impressive rally onboard I've seen and I've seen many. Such speed and precision between the trees and dirt banks, despite the rough terrain and rocks sending the car in all possible directions. What an awesome combination of rally, car, driver and co-driver.
All this is done in a perfect symbiosis with a sturdy yet wonderfully responsive and terrifically poised car, and to the rhythmic and calm, but nowhere near lulling, melody of calls from the perfect co-driver. So memorable. So wonderful. So unreal.
I think that Colin plus Nicky plus the Focus WRC of that time and the Safari Rally are together the embodiment of everything that's best in rallying. You have a brilliant, very brave, and impressively perceptive driver guiding the car on a stunningly fast road in rough terrain, pacing himself in an absolutely awesome way through the particularly difficult bits, using a great judgement and improvisation in his coice of the line.
Epic rally, one of the greatest of all time, this can't get any better. RIP Colin, thank you for leaving us examples of rallying excellence like this, and giving the next generation of drivers the tools to thrill the fans.
as soon as they got rid of the safari rally, i feel the average size of a driver's testicles shrank as a result of a watered-down championship schedule. back then their balls were so large they actually became a weight problem in the car, and they'd get bruised with every rut or jump and they'd start bleeding baby monsters as soon as set free. they called this rally the "car killer", which means to enter this rally you had to either be colin mcrae, or just bat-shit insane.
OK..let's C..I have counted exactly 43 wrecks that I would have had under these circumstances...practically...I wrecked within 23 seconds! Go Collins!!!!

20 years later after this great run, your spirit lives on and the rally returns to Kenya.

What stage is this???
Colin was amazing, he either won a rally by driving flat out or wrecked by driving flat out! He had more balls than a bowling alley, R.I.P.

2000's WRC was something else. McRae was only 3rd with this performance. Just imagine the level of the competition.

Cannot imagine their back and neck state after such one. Incredible in the true meaning of the word.
