- Golden Gate Quartet--1994 U.G.H.A
Paul Brembley,Clyde Wright,Clyde Riddick & Orlandus Wilson
The Golden Gate left the shore's of America in the early 1950's and found fame and fortune in Europe. They were based in Paris, France but performed throughout the world, except for America. It seems our musical tastes change all too quickly and as a consequence talented performers here either leave the business or leave America.
Upon hearing that the Golden Gate Quartet were coming back to America, the Smithsonian Institute invited them to attend a ceremony in Washington, DC. The Gates declined that invitation because they felt it would detract from the real reason they came back to America which was to be honored by UGHA. Orlandus Wilson, spokesman for the 'Gate made note that UGHA was the only organization in over 40 years that remembered the Golden Gate Quartet. They in turn honored UGHA by performing at a meeting show the evening before the Hall of Fame. It was easy to see why they still play before sold out concerts around the world.
Thats my grandfather band they left a great legacy 😢
I was the video camera man that night. Frank Bartholomew worked the video mixing board. I wish we could bring those great nights of vocal harmony back.
David Rockir

When Music is a LEGEND....These brothers of ours are offering their soul, with their incredible voices!.....
I do remember Pastor Mushikangodo who used to sing this song with his son's and daughters Claude, Dieudonné and Maguy. I think the original version will sing in paradise. I love Jesus Christ
Praise the Lord Jesus! He's the only one that knows our heart and troubles we have seen!
Without Jesus there can be no Satan. It's yin and yang, banananagee.

My barber told me about this group today. Most of my friends know that I make no profession of faith and avoid most dogma religiously ( pun intended), but I can not help being moved by the sincerity and depth with which these fellows intone what are obviously their sincere feelings. Enjoy!
Your barber did? What on earth were you doing there Daniel?
Hope you found him. Christ is the savior
I got to know gospel and spirituals through my class and music teacher mid 70s in Berlin. We sang this music in the school choir. That was great! My brother-in-law liked the GGQ and so it happened that I saw the guys live in those years. I loved the nonchalance, the swing of their voices and their whole demeanor. Today I am 64 years old and I am still very touched when I hear them. However, nowadays I perceive the lyrics and the suffering they contain even more. I like to sing along a lot. like back then. What wonderful, soulful music! Thank you gentlemen! Peter/Germany
please can you write for me the intire words of this video? I'm still a bigginer in english. I do not get the words very well, especially the second verse which starts by : "when you see me calling......" and so on...

Aamen!❤🙏❤️
thank s
AMEN.
The Gates did not leave The U.S. because musical taste changed.... as the liner notes of this video claim...the liner notes also says they performed EVERYWHERE except America and the reason was racism...that is why they left and didn't return until 1994...They were welcomed with open arms and treated with dignity and respect in Paris, unlike in their homeland, the racist United States of America...very sad!!!!!
Andre Kilpatrick True story!
How older were they? 😵

Dr T. THE true beholder.
Beeindruckend sakral.
I'm white and I;mnot offended. I'm of Polish dissent and blacks can't polka like Poles do. When one is aware of the history of this song,I truly believe that nobody can sing it with the generational collective soul than the ancesters of slaves.Their dance skllls are from generations of rythmic music as well.Historically "White music" is melodic and more in tune for ballroom dance. The problem with racism isn't recognizing the differences between the races, but not appreciating those differences
AMAZING PERFORMANCE.
THE NEGRO SINGERS CERTAINLY HAVE THE SOUL & SPIRIT,THAT A LOT OF THE WHITE SINGERS DON'T HAVE.
REALLY WONDERFUL VERSION OF A GREAT SONG
WELL DONE
Brasil😝
I feel like to go to Church
And white men CAN jump. Some...And that is the key word. The initial comment you called offensive is historically accurate.Gospel music originated in the American Southern cotton plantations by the slaves when they were converted to Christianity by their masters. From Gospel came the Blues,From the Blues came Rockabilly( and Jazz), From Rockabilly came Rock & Roll. Thus came ABBA! LOL! Abba could not sing like these guys!A few things we know in Detroit. Hockey, Cars and Soul! Abba had no soul! :-D
Put that question in Google - it helps.

Le pauvre Joshua s'il savait........il changer de
Metier
Let's just say that they may be able to do the footwork and copy the technique, but their heart will not be into the music, if you know what I mean. As in classical music, many asians are perfect at technique and skill, but often lack the feeling of the piece.I'm from America by the way, Detroit (A.K.A. Motown and Hockeytown) Thanks for all the great hockey players you have sent us! LOL! Trust me, if my black friends ever polka'd, it would look more like "Dirty Dancing"!
Haha, you're welcome. Perhaps you're right, but an asian classical guitar players CAN feel the music (some) as some black people can feel polka or white people can feel afro-american music. So to say that black people and only black people kan sing afro american music I find a bit offensive.
I do think blacks can polka like Poles (I'm from Sweden by the way) It's only a matter of technique and skill.
אם איש את מר סבלי לא ידע....
seriously? your going to start a race row over a song and how it is sung? no wonder why this world will never move on. always stuck in the past. like a scab keep picking and it just gets worse. people seriously need to grow up. now to what I origionally wanted to say........such a beautifully and emotionally sung song. really moved me to the point of tears. it's a real shame that the music Industry don't make music like this anymore, just noise.
RIP George Floyd
grand et immortel,

That´s offensive.
