    For one's own home, it pays (over and over!) to take the time to fully document all the circuits. Several years ago I went through my entire house and documented what every one of my 35 breakers connects to- every single outlet, light, appliance, HVAC, etc. It isn't difficult, it just requires being organized, and only has to be done once. Now when ever I need to shut off an outlet or fixture, not only do I know which breaker it is, I also know what other outlets/lights/etc will also lose power so there are no surprises. Using a Breaker Finder helps in documenting, but isn't strictly needed. Additionally, knowing exactly what is on each branch circuit allows one to more easily assess the loading.

      Agree 100%. I can't stand when I'm in a new home and I find that the circuit breaker panel is labeled incorrectly and/or incompletely. Even if you don't care about future users needing to know the correct layout, why the heck wouldn't you do it for yourself. Idk.

      I live in an area of the country with some old homes and loose regulations. I live in a home that's not that old (50ish), but dagnab it. The amount of poorly planned and executed "upgrades", flips, alarm systems, etc. The electrical layout of some of these homes is the obvious work of Clark Griswold. Expect some frustration.

    One important safety step I haven’t heard mentioned in the review videos I’ve watched is to check that there is no voltage at the outlet/switch/wires that you’re working on AFTER you’ve turned off the circuit breaker. In rare instances you may have a short circuit where the wired from more than one circuit breaker come into contact due to worn insulation or incorrect wiring.

    • @CarlosGarcia-ls4hn
      @CarlosGarcia-ls4hn 3 місяці тому +2

      Exactly. That is why you should test both receptacles to test for voltage and not take it for granted that the single breaker controls both receptacles.

    Use a radio so you can hear if it’s off instead a light that you can’t see. The Sperry cheaper one has a tone in the outlet transmitter so you can hear it.

      I was actually thinking of doing this with a tiny radio but im having a hard time finding a cheap radio with aC power. I think for someone who doesnt have the GFCI outlet tripper (myself right now), this could be a good value but it is definitely expensive.
      I imagine someone who does home maintenance / handyman work this could be very useful so theyre not tripping various breakers that aren't documented properly while tenets are present and using the electricity

    Nice video and potentially nice tool. My concern would be the tandem breakers I see in you service panel. Are they multiwire
    branch circuits? My guess is you could get close, but still have to turn off multiple breakers before finding the right one.
    And yes, I'm not fan of multiwire branch circuits.

    The battery compartment is annoying though. Instead of having a simple snap cap, you have to use a small screwdriver to replace the batter in the receiver. And since it doesn't get used all the time I like to remove the battery when not in use.

    • @lastbesttool
      @lastbesttool  3 роки тому +5

      That is really odd since there is a tone or signal between the transmitter and receiver that is outside normal circuit noise. So it should be impossible to indicate the wrong breaker. Maybe no breaker, but not the wrong one. That's like the wrong telephone ringing when you call a number. But I guess somehow it could happen. Thanks for the comment.
