- The limestone cave system at Cleeves lies above the Dusk Water in North Ayrshire near Dalry. It was said to be the Elfhame or entry to the Kingdom of the Elves or Fairies. It was used as a hiding place by the Covenanters during the 'killing times' of King Charles II. An Asiatic Cholera Pit is located nearby, hidden in the woods.
I live 10 minutes away from this and never heard of it!.... Thanks for this video,I will visit very soon, the reason I found your video of these caves is because I was reading a copy of Bradshaw's Victorian railway guide and it mentions it as he talks of dalry
It was regarded as one of the 'Seven Wonders of Ayrshire'. Take care - it's a bit hazardous in places.
Cleeve coves many a happy adventure we all had when growing up bit of a trek but well worth it 😎👍
Yes - a great place.
Went there today, such a great place to escape to.
Isn't it just!
Great video. I've often wondered about hibernating bats here. Do you know if someone monitors the site?
Not for certain, but its very likely. Has a lot of disturbance though. I have seen bats in the fissures in the 'ceilings'
@@rogergriffith286 thanks for replying. I'm a licensed bat surveyor and interested to learn what species use it. I'll ask around the bat worker community to find out if anyone is actively monitoring it. All the best.
Been there
Well known in Victorian times.
Do you know what the other six wonders of Ayrshire were?
I haven't seen a list. Ailsa Craig and ?
Perhaps the electric brae?
Where is this exactly
Near South Lissens on the Dusk Water. No official path, just a way into the woods and a couple of access points. It can be quite hazardous - someone broke an arm recently. Easiest access is off the Lylestone to Barrmill road.
