Goats & Dogs Backpacking to an Emerald Green Alpine Lake For Catch & Firebox Cook ASMR Camping

- Life is good when you're in a wild place…so beautiful! Basically, perfect! A secluded emerald green alpine lake filled with a vigorous population of trout! Yet I had the place to myself! It's hard to believe that such an experience is even possible. In fact, the experience is so different from everyday life that when I think back and remember being there it feels more like a dream. Everyday life moves so fast, but then you come back to a place like this and find it hasn't changed. (I sometimes see the same animals) It's almost timeless. When you're there, time slows down, and the days seem longer. So, there's no reason to be in a big hurry-it's easy to do a lot in just one day. Maybe that's why it's so fulfilling...I don't know... There's certainly something special about camping.
I took my dogs and goats way up high, almost to the top of the mountain. We hiked into a beautiful secluded alpine lake under a snowy cliff face, for some epic early season camping. I had a really good time trout fishing the emerald green waters…which eventually provided dinner. I caught a beautiful little cutthroat rainbow hybrid trout known as a cut-bow. I gathered a few sticks and deployed my GEN 2 Titanium 5 inch Firebox Stove to cook up my catch. "Bacon fried green beans under fresh caught Cut-Bow trout. Gently seasoned with sea salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Juice squeezed from 1/2 a lemon, then sprinkled with fresh thyme leaves. I carefully cooked everything in the Firebox Ultra Cook Kit. Starting with the handleless sauté pan to fry the bacon. Then later adding the shallow cowboy plate on top to finish the trout "Dutch Oven style". My intention for cooking the trout was to bring the heat up very slowly, then to stop cooking at precisely the correct temperature. The concept definitely proved itself as the trout was cooked quite evenly-it was extremely moist and tender…almost felt like it was melting in my mouth. The flavors were light, clean and fresh! For sure, one of my top camp cooked meals ever!
After enjoying my trout dinner, I tried my hand at fishing again and caught a very nice cutthroat with my first cast. I thought I had captured it on video but, when I reached to stop the recording, I could see it hadn't started. By that time the trout had been released and I couldn't seem to catch another.
I slept very soundly under my 8 1/2' x 8 1/2' Dyneema tarp shelter with my two dogs. The goats were tied out just behind us. In the very early hours of the morning the birds were going off, making all kinds of racket till about 6am. I finally gave up and got out of bed…at which point they quieted right down, as if they had accomplished their goal. Lol!
I enjoyed a wonderful cup of fresh ground coffee, while I made breakfast, biscuits and gravy, from scratch. I even baked the biscuits in the (Dutch oven configured) Firebox Ultra Cook Kit. I added freshly chopped rosemary to make this meal almost as gourmet as my dinner had been. I got the idea to add rosemary from my restaurant experience. One of my responsibilities was to make soup every day. I found that rosemary was very delicious in cream-based soups like butternut squash, wild mushroom, even corn or clam chowder. It worked! My biscuits and gravy were very delicious!

I love how well behaved the two goats Levi and Bill are. You must have domesticated them very well and from an early age. The dogs are lovely too. Lol! Pack goats come with some caveats. You can't get just one. Since they are a herd animal you have to have at least two. and you can't load their pack very heavy until they are 3 years old. So it's a big commitment 👍

Beautiful trout!! nothing like a clean alpine lake for tasty meals. Steve's voice is so soothing!! Almost puts me to sleep, but then---that's what I get for watching after 11 pm!
It's very relaxing to watch these videos and get some first-hand tips on using the stove. My baking skills are nil---I have some great recipes, but have yet to get the billy-pot technique down, seems as if I need a LOT more thumb-size sticks, and more coals on top. It's a delicate balancing act, indeed.
All baking techniques I've tried require a lot of heat on top 👍 A good rule of thumb is to take it slow. It's better to bake something slowly and eventually get the desired results versus Running too hot From below causing you to burn your project.
@@fireboxstove ahhh--that’s the secret, I’ll give that a try with my next batch, I’ve held the bananas in a paper bag for several days to get them good and ripe.
Heavily spotted is the right condition, but not totally black.

What a beautiful area. I sure do love it here in Utah. I have always felt with camping cooking that simple is better. I typically don't even worry about tomatoes and stuff on a hamburger - fry sauce (only one condiment to worry about packing and keeping cold), bun, cheese, patty, call it good. It always seemed like the more complicated we tried to make it when I was growing up, the more likely it was to get burned in some spots, undercooked in others and keeping flies off it all, cutting things up, etc. was often more stress than I wanted to worry about. Plus I wanted to spend less time cooking and more time fishing or hiking or whatever. However, your videos are definitely making me rethink that whole stance. I find myself wanting to try (and have actually done so) more complicated meals outdoors. I think you've shown you can still have great food without going overboard and spending crazy amounts of time on it. Thanks for all the tips and the inspiration.

you coulda added a cup of water to your frying pan for a nice broth, instead of wiping it away with a towel and tossing it in the fire! some of that broth coulda gone into jazzing up their dry dog food! nice video, anyway! you've shown me how to cook (simply) from a homeless bicycle, just outside the city. thank you!
