    Yes we drove 28k miles in our Ioniq 5 EV last year, if I would have driven a typical 25mpg gas car I would have had to stop for gas 70+ times so that's like 7-10 hours getting gas per year. 95% of the time we charge at home so it's irrelevant if it takes 2-3 hours since I'm not actually waiting for it, when we go on trips it's usually 15-25 minutes or about as long as it takes to eat your Arbys and goto the bathroom. A few times we just need to stop and pick up 30-50 miles to make it to our destination and those are more like 8 minute charges.

      I drove from Norway to Hungary in 32x2 Hours and back 1968x2 km. In 4 days. 17-21 May.
      The tripp took 30 Hours but, I needed to sleep 2,5 hours. We charged 7 tmes one way. We needed to stretch, eat, or rest on all of them. And, we also did some shopping. So, this was a better tripp than with a fossil car.

    In the last 15k miles of charging my car, I have waited exactly 20 minutes charging. All the other charging time happened while I was sleeping or working. It takes about 10-20 seconds to plug in my car twice a week. When I had my gas car, I would stop at least once a week for about 5 minutes, not to mention I had to drive out of my way to get to a gas station since there wasn't one I passed on my commute.

    Another consideration, when traveling in an ev, you don’t “fill up” like a gas car. You charge only enough miles to get to the next charger, leap frogging your trip.then you end up stopping about 10 or 15 minutes, every couple of hours. Just enough for walk arounds and potty breaks.

    • @Wings_Wheels_and_Wires
      @Wings_Wheels_and_Wires  8 місяців тому +1

      That was kind of what I was trying to get at with the bathroom stops part. For most people every two hours is good for bathroom breaks and most EVs over with range over about 250 will recoup most of not all of that during a 15 minute bathroom/leg stretch break.

    Good points. It illustrates the realities for most people that have a EV in their garage. It also points out that having a place to charge should be a consideration before purchasing an EV. Also, great you pointed out the short range of your particular EV. Our Teslas are closer to 300 miles of range, but we stop after 2.3-3 hours to eat or use the bathroom and select places with chargers, as the video mentions. Charging session take about 15-20 minutes since the battery is warm and Tesla chargers are fast.

      Thanks for the reply. Consider home charging is very important to buying an EV. The script for this video was originally part of another video I am working on about whether an EV is right for someone and while writing, I realized this was big enough for its own video. Teslas are definitely one of the better traveling EVs with good range and fast charging. I am looking forward to getting my Aptera that practically eliminates this complaint.

    The only downside to owning an EV is charging away from home. Over time, this will become less of an issue. I only charge at home, so it's not an issue for me. For long trips, I have a Honda Pilot. Which now requires transmission, transfer case and rear differential fluid changes at a cost of around $500. Something an EV will never require.

    Great points! I drive a Model 3 and have a Tesla Wall Connector in my garage. My charging time (plugging in and unplugging) is probably half what you noted (the plug has a button that opens the charge port and it closes automatically when it’s removed) but that 8 seconds a day is rather irrelevant, the point is it’s essentially no time.
    I drove from Michigan to North Carolina last year and my stops were more like 25 minutes on average. That was fine! In fact one was too fast, we ordered sushi and the car was done charging before we even got our food! Plus my wife has this thing called a “bladder” that requires bathroom breaks (who knew?!?) and there have been many times when the car was ready to go before she got back.
    Oh, and the money savings are very real! I saved about $1600 last year by charging instead of gassing up! I went on a camping trip to a state park and charged at the campsite, free charging! Yes, I paid for the site but I was paying for it anyway, I didn’t pay any extra, that’s the point. I’d like to see someone do that with a gas car!

    • @Wings_Wheels_and_Wires
      @Wings_Wheels_and_Wires  8 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for the comment.that 8 seconds adds up. Between that and the longer range, I'm betting you spend less than 20 minutes per year on your non road trip charging.
      Also, even with the stops being 25 minutes, I'm guessing your total charge time for the year is close to, or better than if you had to gas up for your daily commute.
      Great point about the camping. Free fuel for doing what you were going to do anyway. People think I'm just trying to push EVs when I tell them that if you like camping, EVs are the best way to go. You can fill for free if there are hook ups and if there aren't you can run your campsite from the big power wall under you car.
      Being smart about your charging makes a world of difference for owning an EV.

    • @ConservatEV
      @ConservatEV 8 місяців тому

      @@Wings_Wheels_and_Wires People greatly overestimate how often they will need to fast charge (with the caveat that they can otherwise charge at home.) We get about 250 miles of range in the summer and 200 or so on the coldest, windiest Michigan winter day. We have family about 100 miles away we visit for New Years (niece was a NYE baby.) So we drive there, use about 50% of our range at most, have some phantom drain for battery management, and generally have to stop once in the way home… for about 5 minutes. We only need enough power to get home with 5% or so buffer just in case because we can plug in as soon as we get home! We just need to get there!
      I haven’t fast charged in over 2 months. Haven’t had to. Work is 20 miles away, my mom’s house is like 80 miles away (Mother’s Day), so we’ve driven thousands of miles in those couple of
      months but never more than our range on any single trip.
      It cost me about $3800 to get my Wall Connector installed (plus $425 for the device.) A decent chunk of money, but I’m saving $1600 a year vs paying for gas… it will pay for itself in less than three years and it’s all gravy after that! My house was built in 1910 and we only had a 100 amp box so they had to install a 200 amp box, run a new main line, added new grounding rods, added a new meter and ran the line to my garage and installed the EVSE. It was an all-day job! So that’s almost a worst-case scenario of people are wondering what it costs to install an EVSE (aka level 2 charger.) A few thousand.

    Love my model Y. It's a 2020 with 90k miles on it. Only maintenance is I'm on my 3rd set of tires. What can I say, I love to show off how crazy fast it is. It's just the base long range model. I love how fast it is and how technologically advanced it is. There is another consideration for people that can't charge at home. Many places that people visit regularly during the week, such as grocery stores and the like, have fast chargers someplace in their parking lots. If this is the case, they can charge while shopping. Unless they have long commutes, this might be almost as convenient as charging at home, because they would never have to wait for the car to charge. Charging would be done by the time they got back from shopping. Not quite as good as home, but not bad. If such places don't exist where you live, I would still recommend an efficient gas car.

    Having said that. Nice video. Ultimately I generally feel like most people will adopt EVs because they get more ICE like. THEN they will see over time that the proper way to use it. That or give it back. But yeah. I’ve gotten stuck with gas cars (way back before they started making as much noise as they do now when you are low on gas). So I don’t mind pushing it a bit now adays with the amount of pumps around it makes it easy. But I was really carful before. And my wife is constantly worried about gas u less the tank is full. It’s just so inconvenient to run out. And even worse on an electric. And on top of that , how many of us wake up , even occasionally having forgotten to plug in your phone. And also I had bad experiences with battery powered lawn equipment (this was a long time ago. They are better now).

      I have some real problems with hybrids overall, but they do provide some good cross country range. The overall cost of ownership is certainly lower with an EV.
      As far as the build quality, can't argue with that at all. At the risk of sounding like someone I mentioned in a recent video, Toyota's are much better built....unless it the wheels on a bz4x. 😂

      Oh and yeah, I completely agree with the dashboard....and don't forget physical controls

      @@Wings_Wheels_and_Wires Don't spend too much time on Derek. He posts these same comments on other EV youtube videos.

      @@mowcowbell Thanks for the info. I have to agree that Toyota's are better built than Tesla's. This is the EV diconomy since day 1. "Startups" give you the performance but not build quality. Legacy manufacturers can give you quality but crap numbers.

      But with an EV you can charge at home and goto work and back and most everywhere else with never needing to stop. And that 630 miles is running it to E under the ideal conditions ? Most people refill under 1/4 so closer to 550 miles. We drove our Ioniq 5 28k miles last year, if we took your Camry we would have needed to get gas around 51 times, even at 5 minutes thats over 4 hours buying gas, many times it's more than 5 minutes especially if you want discount gas at costco or a less expensive station that's not as convenient so more like 6-8 hours spent on gas getting every year. That's certainly more time than we spent waiting to fast charge.
      And you get 48 mpg ? That would have cost us around $2500 in gas. Plus an Ioniq 5 has maybe double the power and it much larger, a comparable gas car would be closer to 25-28mpg.
