The 2023 Nissan Z Isn't "Better" Than The Supra, But I'd Buy One And Here's Why

- For me it's all about personality. The Z has flaws, plenty of them. But it's also less expensive than the competition, actually made by Nissan and I think better looking. The only non-Nissan thing on board is the 9-speed automatic, but that's fine by me because I'd buy the manual. If you don't need back seats and want 400 turbocharged ponies under the hood, this is a solid way to go. But what about that new Mustang GT? That video is coming next week so stay tuned.

what an eloquent automotive journalist alex is
I’m a fan of the Z also. Seems like everyone else picks the Supra. 😢
I'm glad we have both!
To be fair you haven't been able to buy a Z pretty much at all due to stop sales on the paint, headlights, and automatic transmission.
Hey, never knock yourself for what you like. It is a cool looking car.
I want to get this to 450 hp minimum
You mean the bmw
Thank you for bringing the 3 camera setup back. It's a major reason why I watch your channel more than others, along with the informative info you provide.
I like how both look. I like the specs as well. If I want a BMW I'll buy the Supra.
As well as a far better vehicle 🥴
Main reason I got my soup 😂
This new Z is hands down better looking than the cartoonish Supra
Great review! I am a Z guy as well. Started with the 2 litre Z back in the early 70s (in Japan)/ went through a 350Z Coupe, 350Z convertible, and two 370Zs. I adore the yellow, so I might just go with that.
The biggest downfall of this car is that you can't get an LSD unless you step up to the Performance version that has an MSRP starting at $52,085
If you could get an LSD with the base, I'd have no problem paying an extra $2,000-ish for it
You could just install it yourself for less than $2k. You really have to be driving hard to get the use out of an LSD though.
@@AmericanDuck but then you void the warranty on a brand new car. Also, putting an LSD to good use is very easy when you have 400hp on tap
@@anthonykiedis1765 I put a Wavetrac rear diff in my base 370Z. The dealer has no idea it is in there. And it's bulletproof so anything that could go wrong with the car that would require warranty work would not have anything to do with the rear diff.
Nissan is likely going to come out with a midrange model with the mechanical LSD in a year or so.
May I direct you to the Magnuson-Moss act?
The Z is much more attractive
Nah the Supra looks more upscale saw a z in person it looks cheap and boring.
Hands down no contest.
Nice review. The base with the limited slip rear is the way to go. Then put the rest into power upgrades if you feel like you need to. My best friend's Mom had a 260Z. Loved that car.
100%, some guys running high 10's with minimal mods.
Yeah I think the Nismo 1.5 way LSD is just a bit over $1k, well worth it. Then upgrade the touring car handling with some SPL parts and KW coils then sharpen the power delivery with AMS goodies. For around $8k worth of quality parts and a weekend in the garage a MT base model Z is the way to go for a connected feeling fun car over the new Z4 clown shoe (the Zupra is a nicer and faster car out of the box though, but for the price and what it is I'd rather just buy an M4 with a few km on it if someone twisted my arm and told me I had to buy a Euro tuner car). The looks on this Z are just timeless and they got rid of the weird bulbous curves of the 350 and 370 (big reason I went with the cleaner looking G35 even though it weighs a bit more)!
The main problem is that dealers keep marking these thing up to Ridiculously high upmarks
im buying one this month 500 dollar below msrp, just have to drive 8 hours for it. just inquire at multiple dealerships
Not gonna lie, I’d pick the Z just to get that blue interior 😊
The Z has a better instrument cluster and dash (I hate it when the touchscreen is not integrated into the dash and just sticks up like it was an afterthought). The Supra has better driving comfort and ergonomics.
I'd have to go with the Z. I personally feel it (looks wise) will stand the test of time. Not saying the Supra is bad looking, but Toyota could have done better with the design that transitioned from the spectacular concept. The non-functioning vents I find a bit much as well.
Supra is a sports car and this is a grandpa car.. Btw you can make them functional but engineer's decided to leave them closed because their probably know more about air then us😮😮😮
@@ju4121
If they're functional, then they should be open. Otherwise, if they have no effect on the aero of the vehicle, then they shouldn't be there in the first place. The Supra will still be a sports car, vent or not.
@@chiemekaaI don’t think it matters if there open or not it still outperforms the z. Plus it has more road presence than the z saw a z it already looks old and cheap. You can tell Nissan cut corners.
@@joshlamar1990
Looks are subjective to the person looking. They both have presence in their own way.
@@chiemekaa no they don’t any one can see the Supra is a better car only reason to go with z is if you a fanboy or nostalgia other than that the car sucks.
Great honest review also the Z looks way better than the zupra.
I can’t get over that overbite front end. The Japanese replacement one looks a million times better
I don't understand why people complain about "recycled" parts.. that just makes it easier to get replacements and aftermarket parts..
I love the Z, I’m seeing them more in person and they are absolutely beautifully, they also sound really good but for me I’ll pick the Supra, I like the looks better, it’s quite a bit faster than the Z and I prefer it’s handling characteristics. The Z just felt a little too soft for my liking. It felt more like a GT car that can handle meanwhile the Supra felt like a sports car, if that makes sense
I am glad that both of them exist, I am very excited for the Nismo version of the Z, hopefully it should fix my few gripes that I have with the Z
Is one of your biggest gripes about the Z is the weight?
The Nismo is getting the grill the car should have had from the start. With the new grill its a perfectly styled car, much better looking than the Supra. But the Supra is the better sports car, bummer.
Too bad for now the nismo version is automatic only. Which is a major bummer for me as I had a 2012 nismo 370 with manual and it was a blast.
moving around to "Z" back of the car.. I see what you did there !!! :)
I love the Z! Very beautiful car. I too would pick this over it's competition. 40K is reasonable by all means and I don't mind some part sharing, but those 03 Altima window switches are out of line! Also I'm very surprised about the lack of D wheel...my neighbor's ROGUE has one lol
You will probably never find this car for 40k when production does pick up the price will be higher they are already creeping up.
This was a great review. I’ve seen very little about this Z. I owned a 2009 370Z, which was nice. I have no problem if this is based on that platform, and I really love the looks.
Yep, that's my thought process, the looks are like a greatest hits album and the performance is good, and will only get better with aftermarket upgrades. The Zupra is nice, but if I want to buy a BMW I'll get one with an actual BMW badge.
I like the z a lot . But the car without the performance pack really need some sort of limited slip diff. if not a electronic limited slip a basic mechanical limited slip. Instead of the open diff ..
I have a 370Z which was the base model. I put a Wavetrac differential in. Not cheap, but awesome and bulletproof!
Damn Alex this is such a good argument for the Z I really love how you put it together with some little Z words in there to make me smile while I learned the details. A+ review mate
I'd take the Z on looks, alone. Factor in the price for the 3 liter Supra and it's a no brainer.
In the real world the Z costs more due to markups. 😂
I owned a 1974 Datsun 260Z. I have yet to see one in person. The dealers just don't have them in stock. I also haven't seen one on the road yet. I do wish they had a front body "Bumper" like the photo you showed.
Was wondering why the switch to auto buyers guide, are you planning on adding more crew members to the channel? Alex on autos will always be legendary
We've had others on the channel, Brian was a regular for a year and you'll be seeing Nick soon. We're looking to pick up one more person as well.
A base 4 cyl Cayman starts at 68k. I would be curious to understand the road feel/driving dynamic differences between these 2 cars.
The z is the much better car, specifically because it’s easy to modify it, plus it’s cheaper.
@@2seep did you just say a Nissan is a much better car than a Porsche in 2023 😂
I like it. Would definitely get a stick. It'd lose too much personality with an auto. I've no problem with the amount of power. I'd like to drive one to see what you mean by power delivery. That could be an issue (or maybe not).
The Nissan Z for the win because Nissan didn't run to BMW to help them build it like Toyota did.
So what? All parts in both outsourced are made in china.
Nissan definitely needs some help this car is at the bottom of the barrel as far as performance and hoe cheap the interior looks for the price
im a touring guy, meaning i love going on a cruise around town on weekends. i do not race or go to the track so i'll choose the Z over the supra.
Fun matters a lot. I recently bought a GR86 and after 139mi I am selling it, it feels like I am driving a video game. I prefer the 1st Generation BRZ / FRS
Its basically the same car with more power. Unplug the artificial sound
@@beexiong2995 wrong and I did
Id buy this too.. id buy the mid grade version and over the years have it as a add aftermarket to it
I own a supra, I've driven the Z aswell. The interior is better on the Z, but it has more body roll, the power felt similar, but the tests show the supra to be faster. I owned the previous 370z Nismo, the engine is definitely better on the new Z.
I think Alex absolutely nails this review! I don’t think there’s a single thing he said in this particular review that I disagree with.
The power from a 3.0 V6 is quite impressive. I'd like to have that engine in my 66 Mustang. 😊 It would be fun if someone would let you drive an original 240 on the same road and do your typical road test. You could bring your mom along for fun.
Great review Alex. 👍👍
*Z is Nissan telling their Fans* ,
“We listen, we giving you what you want.”
*Supra is Toyota telling their Fans* ,
“You guys should be driving BMW, but buy from us, we want your money.”
Can I get a definition for video game like? I've watched hundreds of your videos and can't remember you using that term before let alone more than once in the same video for two completely different topics like handling and the gearbox feel
The best way I can phrase it is that the feel is very direct, but "isolated". It goes where you steer it, but there's not much feedback.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide makes sense! Thanks!
Loved it the minute I saw it. I'd like to buy one and this might be the reason I sell my classic 1969 this year. I've got a bit more homework to perform like what's the service like. I've got some Toyota mechanic friends who HATE working on the Supra- BMR. But I understand Toyota not wanting to develop Their Own.
I've only seen 1 Z on the road here in Massachusetts . I think the Dealer price gouging might be a little to blame. When they were first released prices were just silly.
So I'm looking forward to test driving one and listing my classic 2 seater for sale after the drive that is.
The Bupra (Supra) was a huge let down for me at least.
Thanks for your insightful overview.
I definitely prefer the alternate grill and hope they offer it. I also hope I will fit in it. I'm 6'2 and have always rubbed my head in Nissans, though they were Maximas and Sentras with sunroofs and I hoped this one's solid roof would be better. I'm a Toyota fanboy disappointed by the Supra's looks, though I've come to terms with it being a BMW because at least they raised BMW to their level. It's a hard choice I hope to be burdened with making soon if my hard work pays off.
I'm 6'-3" and own a 370Z. You should be fine in the Z (interior dimensions are identical to 370Z). I've driven it across the country and it isn't bad at all for a tall guy.
You should do a video in the Z NISMO. I have driven both and while the Z performance is fun the NISMO turns it up to 11. It only has 20 more HP and 30 lb ft more but OMG it’s a lot dofferant. The 9 speed transmission has been completly gone over and it up shifts and downshifts 50% faster!! It shifts so fast it’s pretty much indistinguishable from a dual clutch transmission. The suspension is also differant. It has been tightened up but it’s still very daily drivable. And the exhaust has been changed too. A bigger oils cooler has been put in. The same wheels that the GTR has on it are included. It has a differant throttle body. And it’s got wider tires. 255 in front and 285 in rear. The other trims I think as 245 and 275.
I don't care if it's made by BMW, so I ordered a Supra RZ.
I think Nismo's specs and looks are worthy of comparison with the Supra, but considering the price, the Nismo's rival is the Porsche Cayman, not the Supra.
I think the Z is also a great car, but I feel that the reason why people choose the Z is not because it's superior to the Supra, but because they like Nissan and don't like it because it's made by BMW. But price, handling and horsepower aren't the only reasons to choose a sports car. I think that feelings are also important.
Let’s get a Mazda I6 for the next gen Supras! Mazda can take over the BMW role with a Mazda MX6 convertible with a small back seat for the groceries/dogs/baby seats.
It's too new and doesn't have the advantage of power in its favor without all the ev stuff attached to it. Plus the bmw i6 having a hybrid version that makes more power pretty much throws that idea out of the window.
@@carboydorifutoparty3976 Toyota has a stake in Mazda. So it’d be more Japanese or Toyota grown sports car which aligns with their goal.
Plus Mazda does have the hybrid versions of the same new I6 drivetrain so totally feasible to incorporate it if Mazda and Toyota commuted to this.
I get it with all the BMW gear in the dealership garages it’d be hard to switch. But it does make sense. And it’d be so nice to see a medium size sports car with the Mazda design language.
Granted. BMW I6 makes great power and have a lot of robust history, and Mazda is a new engine with currently modest outputs.
"Z back of z car" :) I almost wish this was a german car. Then you could go all in with Z jokes! You are a joy to watch and listen to for a non native. Keep up z good work.
They finally listened to John Davis about the volt gauge.
Oh no you didn't... Now you got Toyota AND Bmw fan boys mad...
😅😂😅😂
Is there a premium on these? I have yet to see one on the road! It's been a year. Where are they???
The new NISMO Z does 0-60 in 3.9 seconds on just a regular road. When the tires are heated up and all the fluids are at operating temperature I think you could squeeze 3.7 out of it.
I love everything about the car except for the grill
It’s a sad world if most people would get this with an automatic transmission 😢
I absolutely am saving to get the "Z" my favorite sports car rn
10:17 I Z what you did there.
Teehee
The look he gave when he said "power bulge" 😵. Yummy
How does this compare to the Golf R DCT. That's what I'm cross shopping
The Golf R DSG is faster to 60 and with an APR tune will blow pretty much everything out of the water under $80,000.
Its a Nissan, not a BMW in drag like the Supra. It wins on that alone.
Exactly.
The camaro and mustang might feel heavier but they'll mop the floor with this z and you'll get a better sound track and plenty of personality i would get the camaro over all of them and the z would definitely be my pick over a supra
I own a 370Z with dual air intakes, high flow cats, and a tune. I pull from Mustang GT's on the highway. Camaros are ugly AF and chicks dig the Z, trust me! ☺
@@povertyspec9651 you had to do all that to make do something please lol
I actually saw one of these in the wild this past weekend. So beautiful in person.
Looks great in profile. (9:44) Go for the performance pack.
Love the Z and would buy it over the Toyota.
I don’t recall seeing more than just a couple of these out in the wild since they’ve been out, and I live in very sports car oriented canyon country, coastal SoCa.
An excellent review, as always. I think you are absolutely right. Z is not just unique with a distinctive personality but I think it is also more classy and elegant than most of the competition including Supra.
What is the cheapest avenue to 400hp on a porsche?
It needs at least 50 more HP...to keep up with American muscle...500hp would put in GTR territory...
Plus a DCT transmission...and AWD option.
I love the interior upgrades they made on this version, but I don’t like the front end which includes the head lights and the rear is just ok. I owned a 2013 370Z Touring, but eventually the low ride height (getting into an entrance to a business was always a slow effort to not scrape the front end) and awful blind spots made me give it up after a few years. Did they at least add blind spot monitoring to this one? I don’t remember you mentioning the safety features.
6:11 What we want to know : does it suffer from rev hang? What is the button between the two cupholders for?. Is the hatch button lock-off when moving forward? otherwise it is dangerously badly located.
At least it's an actual Nissan.
Not some badge engineered, hairdresser's BMW with a hardtop.
I LOVE my Auto Z Pro!
Did Alex say "moving around to 'Z' back of the car"?
I just couldn’t help myzelf…
I owned a 95 Supra for years and had a 97 Supra for a week; the MK V aren't those vehicles and I wouldn't' even look at it. Hats off to Nissan for developing their car in- house. Years ago I considered the Supra as being superior to the Z but now this Z would be my choice hands down.
😂
Amazing review of the awesome new Z. Wonder if maybe a 4 cylinder, maybe a 2 liter with 280-300 hp, might come out at some point? Maybe for $35K?
Agreed. I would get the base model and save a shit load of money. With the manual tranny.
Not in the market for one of these but if i was, id go for the Z.
The fact that its not selling as well as the supra only just means later down the road, it would be higher in demand. The caveat being youd have to REALLY maintain it and refrain from modding it, and youd have to be willing to wait 10+ yrs.
I wouldn't really go too much on current sales. The Z is extremely production limited at the moment.
@bigd7386 Yessir all the more reason I'd go for the Z
The Z isnt special. Considering the cheap parts it's made of are from 2004 make it undesirable for collectors lol.
@beexiong2995
And the old supra is made of special parts? bro, stoppit...
the old rx7 is made of special parts? stop....
Stick to your civic si bro
@@beexiong2995 Collectors care about cars that are fun, have personality, and that stand out. No one gives a sheit about "cheap" mass produced parts which are pretty much everywhere except for high dollar exotics. I guarantee you this Z will be a huge head turning collectible when everyone else is driving soulless Tesla appliances.
I wish that Nissan would have built the NISMO for the masses. The Z is a good car and is fast but the NISMO spec is pure perfection. I would take the NISMO over any other sports car that’s $70,000 or less. I would rather have a Z performance than any of the bmw I mean Toyota Supra the Mustang or Camero. I love Nissans and have owned a lot of them. Own one right now. Always reliable always works. I love the new Z. I’m not a huge fan of the Supra and the Mustang and Cameros are nice but those are V8 cars.
I like the personality that the Nissan Z has and its somewhat affordable new sports car price tag compared to other rear-wheel-drive coupes. The Z might not have all the luxuries compared to the new Toyota Supra but it is a well around new sport coupe to me. 👍
This car is way past affordable at this point
I bought the exact same color, same car. It's perfect for daily and fun. Z is always the best value. Have driven a 2015 cayman gt4 500 kms. It's better , but twice the orice better nope. By the way the cayman had 300kms on it when it drove it. Z is always best value.
Great review and fair comparison. 22:51
Only reason I want one is how it looks. Unfortunately it sucks in literally every other way. The fact that it cuts power at redline and you cant fully turn off the traction control is what sealed the deal for me on avoiding it. That shit is unforgivable in a sports car.
Great review. Doesn't talk too much like most GenZ'ers desperate for content. Just to the point. Nothing more.
Thx great review. Will keep my yellow ‘19 zed sport manual.
At least the Z have a manual e brake
I’d pick the z because it’s a real authentic Japanese sports car. I commend them for their effort. I’d even forgive Nissan if this were a rebadged bmw. The Supras only “better” because it’s a bmw.
Toyota who has significantly more cash than Nissan chose to take the lazy route and cheapened out by going to bmw. The whole excuse “Without Toyotas help neither the z4 and supra would exist”
Oh please 🙄. That’s not Toyotas problem. They don’t own bmw LOL
I think you forget that one of the big reasons this new Z exists is because the old Z existed (as this is basically a heavy refresh and not an all new model, so much of the R&D was largely already done and paid for).
@@ALMX5DP true but the fact that it’s 100% Nissan is what makes it interesting
But it is true tho. And it’s not like Nissan have as a ground up new vehicle, the chassis is just a reworked 370z chassis which is a reworked version of the 350z chassis which means the new Z is riding on a modified 20 year old platform. Which is one way Nissan got to save money, the engine is also just lifted out of the Infiniti products so they did not need to make an all new engine. Only really need parts of the Z is the exterior, auto transmission and some interior.
Toyota on the other hand did not have a platform that was light enough that coulda used or an engine, and financially is just doesn’t make sense to dump billions of dollars into a vehicle that doesn’t make any profit for then, we would hate to have an LFA 2.0 type situation. So it makes sense why BMW and Toyota came together
@@naveenthemachinesure I feel similar, just wanted to make sure you understood why Toyota took that direction instead of this one, as their investment into a new sports car would have been substantially more than what Nissan needed.
@@alwaysiyi272not to mention the transmission I believe is a Mercedes 9-Gtronic design that was tweaked and is being used in other Nissans like the Frontier and Titan.
Any chance for a Z convertible?
Seems like it's basically zero chance.

Nice video. Where can I find that alternate front bumper for the Z?
I think you mostly pick the Z for its styling. You could get a V8 Camaro for cheaper, but those are so common.
love those BLUE seats
I chose the Z. I have nothing against BMW, but I think Toyota dropped the ball by not making their own car. I owned a 2017 m240i manual for 2.5 years, and it's a great car. It's not quite as much fun as the Z though. Nissan is only building about 100 of these per month, so it's pretty rare to see on the road. That rarity combined with the looks, and the fact that's a real JDM car make it cooler than the Supra, IMO. Who cares if the Supra is marginally faster out of the box? It's a road car.
Z for me! All in house made, n cheaper than the supra. 😎👍
@10:16 Z back of the car? I Z what you did there.
I don't think I've seen one on the road yet in southern California
The new Z is rather homely though not ugly per se. It just has typical Japanese styling. Sadly that hurts it in the overall market where looks count for something.
Wonder how it handles with snow tires?
What is that button on the right from the start button?
i completely forgot this car existed.
I love it too ! 👍😎
I like the location, where is it?
Without watching the video yet, no the Z isn’t better than the Supra 3.0 Manual. Nissan should have included a LSD on the base at $40-42K. Now I shall watch.
LOL. Not "better" than a Supra, just more "personality"
@@AAutoBuyersGuide I'd be on a list for a base Z if it had an LSD.

#1 Rule NEVER BUY THE 1st model of ANYTHING ❤️❤️❤️
Which will be reliable over the years ? The supra ? Or the Z ?
Your main complaint against the Supa seems to be that it’s made by BMW.
Keep in mind. The Z is a sports car, with superior engineering by Nissan. There is no competitor to the Z. True Japanese heritage. You cannot compare the Z to ....anything. The Z is not perfect. Not perfect. The illusion of perfection will cost more than a Lamborghini.....which is still not perfection although.... All the youtube dweebs compare the Z to the batmobile. The batmobile is for the child who likes the shiny penny. 10 years from now....what? 20 years from now ..............what? 110 years from now............what?
I agree, Alex. I much prefer the Z over the Supra. The Supra simply isn’t a Toyota and the Supra is also completely hideous. I would take a close look at the Mustang, however.
