- Sskenshin21 requested two Dragon Quest related videos that I planned to take him up on. This is the first one, a look at Dragon Quest VIII on iOS. I talk a bit about what I like, dislike, and show some gameplay up to the boss fight against Geyzer. So don't worry, no spoilers here. If any of you have any requested videos, be sure to let me know and I'll see what I can do. I can't promise I'll do every video, but I will certainly try.
The first time I ever played Dragon Quest V was on my Android LG G4 With a curved screen! And I actually REALLY enjoyed it. The Portrait mode worked very well for one hand gameplay. Kinda funny it became one of my favorite games of all time because of that port. Good memories with that.
Dragon Quest V is an outstanding game. It took me some getting used to the portrait mode in a massive 3D game like VIII, but I was surprised how well it worked for the overworld.
The DQ 5 mobile port is amazing! I enjoy it more on mi iPad than on my iPhone (the controllers are a bit more comfortable for me on a larger screen,) but everything else is just amazing.
Hey COE. Thanks a bunch for this video -- In case you're ever curious on revisiting DQ8, I have some videos on my channel of a new "remaster" mod specifically for the mobile version.
It fixes numerous issues & drawbacks (i.e. the framerate), adds a number of new features (i.e. voiceovers), as well as general polish (orchestral soundtrack, upscaled textures, etc).
The 3DS version sounds much better, but this is the second DQ game I ever played. And I played it on iOS. So, because I hadn’t played the original PS2 version or the new 3DS version, my expectations weren’t astronomical. This version has the best graphics, has a great control scheme, and is amazing to have in my pocket for those long meetings or late night baby feedings. I highly recommend this version of the game. And it was updated to fill newer iPhone screens!
Curtis Shideler which iPhone do you use to play this game? I’d like to play it but I’m only using an iPhone 6s+ so I’m not sure if it’s going to run well
Yeah same here. I didn’t grow up with any of the PlayStation consoles and I traded my 3DS for my Switch years ago. Even when I still had the 3DS, I couldn’t find copies of Dragon Quest 7 or 8 anywhere.
I already have the 3ds version,so I'm going to just stick with that.Nice review though.
Even though the intro when you select New Game still looks choppy, the framerate of the rest of the game looks pretty good! It looks like a consistent 30 FPS while exploring and during combat, which is better than when it originally came out on iOS devices. Still, I don't like the black bars to the sides of the ipad version. Also, all of my mobile devices are too old to run this game at 30 FPS, and I don't have money to buy a newer iOS device. I think I'll save and buy a 3DS to get the 3DS version. Thank you for showing this footage!
Most likely, it's the prerendered cutscenes (same with the pre-title screen video seen at 0:24). They were rendered @ 15fps (at least, on the Android version, they still are), so it's likely that when they improved the framerate on the iOS version, those videos were left the same.
I mean, I’ve played the other Dragon Quest games on my iPad and old Kindle Fire and it didn’t take long for me to adjust to the portrait mode and touch controls. I just wouldn’t bother playing them on a phone or smaller device only because then it would feel awkward with how big my hands/fingers are. That being said, whenever I would browse games back when I still had my 3DS, I rarely saw the Dragon Quest 7 and 8 remakes available. I also never grew up with the PlayStation systems. Ultimately I traded my old 3DS for my Nintendo Switch, which I don’t regret doing. I can live without the voice acting and orchestra music.
playing it for the first time on my 11 atm. runs great, having a blast.
Whats the fps
Muy buen video, tenía pensado comprarme la versión de Android, pero después de tu vídeo e decidido mejor emularlo en 3DS
I've been playing DQ4 on Android. I think the screen real estate works for a game like that, but I'm not sure about 8. Wish I could play my 3DS version in HD :(
Yeah same here. I wish I could easily find a way to capture 3DS footage too, so that I could actually highlight the DS and 3DS games that didn't make it out here.
I have dragon quest one through six on my galaxy tablet and I have 8 7 and 9 on my 3DS right now I am on 5
How are you enjoying the series up to now?
Project COE it’s really good after I beat five I’ll be on dragon quest six
Arin Elliott VI used to be my favorite for years. I adored the two world system. I hope you enjoy it as well :)
Project COE I had six isn’t really that good but I don’t know when I get to it I’ll probably like it
@Roblox Champion Absolutely. I'm currently playing through it haha. I now use the save editor with this game just to ensure I have access to all the DLC content ;)
Awesome video!! The 3ds version is the definitive edition to me, with the only problem being no orchestrated music. I would like to ask you a question about dragon quest 11 3ds about the yochi quest. How do you recruit stronger yochi for the dungeon quest without streetpass? I remember a video of when you talk about super bosses you can fight if you finish all the yochi village quest but you said you need S rank yochi. Is random where you find them or do you have any specific tactics you use when trying to find them? I would greatly appreciate the help on this. Thank you! :)
Hey there Daniel, no problem. As you explore the world you will randomly spot Yocchi all over the place. Just remember their locations, talk to them, see their rank and don't accept anything under A. S and A are good enough for you to progress though a lot of the Yocchi dungeons. The Yocchi also appear on the map in the areas you visit so you should have no problem going all over the world collecting them. I never had access to StreetPass features for obvious reasons (I live in Canada) and I completely mastered both versions of the game, PS4 & 3DS.
@@ProjectCOE Oh okay. Thank You So Much!!!!! You are the best!! You are the reason I finally was able to get the 3ds version and I am having a blast. Since I have 100% the ps4 version, I am able to run through the game pretty easily and my goal is to get through the hero adventure books, the Yocchi Dungeons, and finally the remembrance palace. I hope you have wonderful rest of your day and again Thank You!!
No problem. If you need any assistance with anything let me know. You should be good to go given you polished off the PS4 version, but it's always fun talking about this killer game. I'm still sad this will never be released outside Japan. Essentially the unique 3D version will forever remain an exclusive to the land of the rising sun.
Thanks for the review. I would have pick this game up right now if it had controller support, but alas, i'll have to find a different way of playing this game.
P.s. If I recall correctly, there are settings to put the on screen joystick off to the side. Much better than having it dead center imo. Shame there’s no MFI support though!
Game ran at 15FPS before, now it's 30 and doesn't hurt my eyes. Edit: Oh no it's still 15fps on Android and they won't let me refund it. 😭
I have some videos (& link in the description) on my channel for a mobile remaster patch. It fixes the framerate, improves the textures, adds orchestral music, amongst *dozens* of other improvements.
Since you already own it, it wouldn't take much effort at all to install.
Thanks for this video. Not only did you save me twenty bucks but you’ve let me know that the version I do have is the best one.
The DS dragon quest games are a bit expensive and hard to find. Are the mobile versions good enough or should I play on a DS?
To each is own right. For me there's no substitute, but people here swear by them. They all have this portrait view and one-handed gameplay system. It works, I just find the traditional DS and 3DS games to be more practical for me.
You could absolutely play them on Mobile. Almost all of the games are the exact same performance wise, and are very convenient. I’d actually recommend playing Dragon Quest IV on Mobile instead of the DS port because the DS port was actually unfinished, while the Mobile version is the complete product. If you don’t care about owning the game cases, or just don’t mind not playing the games on the DS, I think you should absolutely get the games on Mobile. Much cheaper and easier. The ports get a bad wrap just because they’re on Mobile, but they’re actually great ports.
Just play them on Citra if you don't have a 3ds
I have been playing most of them on iOS so far. I wanted to show square that there is interest so I bought them. They are worth the price it is a full game vs a mobile game. If you want to show interest in the west I say buy mobile with the exception of VII and viii which can be bought on 3ds. I bought VIII on iOS because of this video and will also buy on 3DS in the future.
Yeah the mobile releases are absolutely playable, no question about it. Everyone will have their own preferences, as you'll see in an upcoming video. I have a quick demonstration of Dragon Quest III remaster on the Super Famicom that I show because it is my favorite version of that game.
the framerate seems to have improved and the lack of voice acting doesnt bother me. thx for the video will pick this up when I can
Awesome man thanks! I went ahead and got the iOS version and will buy the 3DS version as well! It seems to look better on iOS than 3DS. Also I’m down for a Dragon Quest VII on iOS video! One last request I wanted to added is that if you already got a device to capture 3DS footage, it would be interesting to see the quest that involve the older Dragon Quest games in Dragon Quest XI 3DS. I have yet to find like a walkthrough through each of them. I noticed that VII and above uses the 3D art style while all the others use 2D which seems to be the case with the switch version but only accessible in 2D.
Glad you enjoyed. I actually have a video where I show the various areas. Unfortunately I don't have an easy way to capture 3DS footage so it's off-screen and that's a royal pain. I had so many requests back in 2017 for that when I first started playing it. ua-cam.com/video/b400FNeNtrU/v-deo.html
You're right that VII and VIII used the 3DS models, whereas all the others used their original models. X also used a VII / VIII - inspired look. From what I hear these areas are all going to be displayed in 2D on the Switch so it should prove to be quite interesting. I really wish there was an easy way to capture footage of both Japanese and North American DS and 3DS games as I would have way more DQ content like Monsters on the channel.
Project COE I’ll try to look for an easy way to capture 3DS footage and let you know! Also I was talking more like a more in depth video per Dragon Quest World in DQXI 3DS. I saw that video and it just left me wanting to watch more! Again thanks for everything! It’s because of you I took interest in the series and now I’m obsessed lol.
Sskenshin21 If you can find me a solution, even if I have to pay money for a pre-installed capture card I’ll do it. These things are impossible to find these days that do everything I require. I would love to be able to record direct footage to show all these worlds and games.
Ok so I messed around online and found some killer emulators that should help me capture footage from the Famicom through to the DS releases. I can grab X and XI easily, which just leaves VII and VIII on the 3DS. Technically I could test the emulation for PS1 and PS2 and see if they're worthy to capture the original DW VII and DQ VIII. This would allow me to do my top ten Dragon Quest games of all time, or top XI as is the case today ;)
Project COE Citrus is a 3DS emulator. I don’t know if it runs XI well. I downloaded VIII to test it out and it looks ok but I did just the intro because I wanted the official 3DS version. I might try XI and see if it works because I really want to try the 3DS version of XI but I don’t understand Japanese.
The ps2 version has to be the best one but its 2 flaws are 1: battles are really slow and 2: the triangle button is the back button instead of circle
It’s weird, because for me, since I was a kid, the triangle button is the back button, and the cross button is the confirm button.
I had to adapt on the vita because like the Japanese PS2, the circle button is the confirm instead of the cross
thanks for this review. Appreciated
Have you reviewed DQ 2 through 6 on Android/IOS? I noticed you thought #1 worked very well.
Definitely enjoyed this
For $20 I'll pass as much as I want the nostalgia. If this was like $5-8 I'll consider it
its like almost 40$ here in australia
How the hell did you play it at an FPS higher than 15? Does IOS run better than Android?
in Android even i play it on my rog 3 it lock on 15fps 😩
I'm really disappointed "no voices" when they talk
Does this come with Controller support?
I’ve owned DQ 8 on my iPad Pro for going on two years now, and barely invested 40 minutes in it so far. Just started DQ 11 on PC and already immensely enjoyed 10+ hours in it.. the first DQ game I’ve really gotten into. I’m now considering it one of the best RPG’s I’ve ever played.
Do you think DQ 8 will be a let down after the bar was raised so high with 11? I know I’m going to want to explore more of the DQ catalog after I finish 11 .. Maybe I should emulate 8 so I don’t have to play in vertical mode on iOS, which is my only gripe with the iPad version. Not sure why the devs thought that was a good idea!
No dq 8 is still one of the best dragon quest games, the world has a lot more charm to it compared to 15 surprisingly
No voice acting? Thanks for letting me know. I will end my mobile DQ experience with DQ V. I'll buy the nintendo switch version instead
Do you think DQ monsters 3 will ever get a western release?
Joker 3 Professional is going to stay in Japan I'm afraid. Square-Enix doesn't seem to be showing the sub-series a lot of love outside Japan and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
Project COE ahh that’s a shame as I really enjoyed the first 2
@@jon1184 Yeah it is a shame. It has been quite a number of years now and no signs of them bringing it over so I don't believe it will ever happen at this point. In fact we're just about due for another new Dragon Quest Monsters game in the near future, which I believe will be either on mobile or on Switch.
if the 3ds version isn't your thing, the best quality to play this game in my opinion would be to track down a backwards compatible ps3 and a copy of the ps2 version, but i would recommend to new comers to stay away from the mobile version, it works, it might be shiny hot trash, but its trash none the less
The fact that I can’t go wide screen is the only reason I’m not buying this for phone
I sold my 3ds already. I hope they update this port. I haaaaaaaate portrait mode. I would love to use my 8bitdo controller for this
2hrs in, you've barely felt the tip, play another 40hrs
Anyway to use. Conntroler on the ios
I would love to see you cover the DQ7 iOS version, even if it's Japan exclusive.
"It doesn't have controller support." And Square Enix is charging 20$ for this? Really? I'm definitely buying the 3DS version. I could understand that some of the features were missing (like lack of voice-acting,) but no controller support for a game that clearly needs a controller to be played properly, and for a such a high price tag, I think that Square Enix really dropped the ball.
No voice over in this android port??😡🤬🤬
It's based off the Japanese version, which has no VA. Which is weird, because it has the Jessica ending which was on the DS, but you can't play as Red or Morrie.
It runs this well though on iOS? The Android port is awful
Someone knows how to change the outfit for characters? I already tried to use or equip and nothing happens, im playing on android device
Light only a few armors make cosmetic changes
You should be playing on phone 📱 not i-pad
The first time I played this was on my ipod touch, it was still a great game but it ran horribly.
Portrait mode only?? Why? Bah.
Now looking at the ios port here, how this game runs is fine. When I try to run it on an android phone however, even if I have a very powerful one, it runs like crap. If it just had a decent framerate like what it shows here, I wouldn't mind playing it.
Is this on Apple TV
Unless something drastic has changed, no, it only plays on iPhone/iPad because it plays in Portrait mode only and has no controller support.
Cumbersome
it only runs in 15fps 😩
Save files please. Wherever it has all consumables items and equipable items but all at level 1 and 0 gold.
Android save files pls
I pirated this one, to get a feel for it, and it was unbearable... awful. Couldn't even play it for 30 minutes... so I uninstalled it and just bought the 3ds version KEK
The lack of voice acting, for a game with this much text, is pretty unbearable. DQ1-4 could get away with it, because the exposition is in short bursts. The controls are horrendous; the menus are frustrating on a touch screen. Just an awful awful awful port.
I hate the way this guy talks, like get to the freaking point.
