- I get asked a ton whether you can firearm hunt out of a saddle, or is it a bowhunting only thing. In this video we take a look at how easily adaptable saddle hunting is when using a firearm.

Good video, no different. Shot a big doe during Maine’s muzzle loading season. Between archery, rifle and muzzle loading had a great fall. Healthy 67 here so you have some time to hunt brother! 😂
You most certainly can 😁👍 11-14-2022 I harvested a 8 point 179lbs dressed. Ever since I started saddle hunting 4 yrs ago, I seldom fix stand hunt. I more so SRT. I used a Springfield bolt 3006. When I'm in saddle hight that's when I load. I unload before repelling. Load couple rounds in for walk out.😁👍
Looking forward to using my Ruger American bolt action with a 16" barrel next week for a late season hunt. I think the small rifle will work really well!
I bow hunt and rifle hunt from a saddle. I personally think gun hunting from a saddle is much easier than bow hunting. Especially here in Louisiana where it's never very cold.
Thank you. You sure are making the case for saddle hunting.
I just have to find trees suitable. Few and fair between on the plains of Colorado and the ones you do find are pretty gnarly. They tend to not grow straight up.
great, this early November I harvested a 6 points with my 270 during my second saddle sit ever 👌
Looking forward to hunting from my saddle with my rifle this coming Saturday. Nice video.
Great video. Look forward to seeing others
Why wouldn’t it work as good for gun as it does for bow? I’ll take this to a different level I live in northeast where bow hunting comes in a distant second to gun hunting mostly due to season timing. I luv to bow hunting but take all my vacation during gun season which in Maine is entire month basically of Nov. Saddles work great with all the brace points with tree and bridge. Ultimate gun setup that my boss just bought is a JX3 hybrid. Lounge chair in a tree and everyone can shoot a gun sitting!!! Only reason I didn’t jump into that first off instead of a saddle is I still struggle a bit to shoot out of a saddle as I’m so used to shooting from fixed platforms but with practice I will eat used to the brace point being my waist instead of my feet as a base. I’ve never been able to shoot proficiently from sitting position so learning curve way bigger for me with a JX3 but after trying it in a tree it’s the most comfortable thing I’ve ever sat in up in a tree next to a heated box blind with a big comfy chair!!! Gun hunting from a saddle is deadly for all the brown critters in the woods.
I love the AR platform out of the saddle...watta great combo!
Do it all the time, my gun sit on my bridge. I use my bridge as a stabilizer too.
How did you add the picatinny rails on the barrel fore end. I have not seen that before and would very much like to know about it.
@robertweller2662 that upper came that way from Bushmaster.
Hey Man Nice video! What 360 camera are you running?
In that video it was the Insta360 One RS with 360 mod. Currently, I use an Insta360 X3.
Thanks good video. How do you hoist your gun?
I use a device called a Doyle's hoist. It is a self-recoiling pull up strap. But there are a bunch of different ways to pull up a bow or firearm for saddle hunting.
@@NewDayOutdoorsso you just leave it at the bottom of the tree until you get set up...then hoist it?
How do you bring your gun with you on your back or repel it up ?
@steveenczi8967 pull up rope just like any other hunting situation from an elevated stand.
@ wouldn’t it slinged on our back be easier?worried about it getting hit and off sight
Hope that's not a 223 or 556 because that's not enough bullet
It is a 450BM. It is not my first rodeo. .223 while not enough, isn't even legal for deer in Indiana.
223 or 556 is plenty. Just need to be careful on shot placement.
I don’t personally hunt with either one of those rounds but are both rounds we started young kids off with every year. We’ve probably guided 25-30 youths with a .223 over the last 30yrs and never had an issue with them using proper bullets and making the youth chose a good shot. Now We’ve changed over to a 350 Legend but that’s new caliber. In Maine it’s legal to hunt deer with a .22mag. Now not my choice but guys hunt with 22-250’s all the time and I started hunting with a .22 hornet that my grandfather fed his family (16 bro’s and sisters) with back in the 1920’s and 30’s. He probably killed 250 deer with that gun back in the day and I killed my 1st two deer as a kid with it and one was a 220lb 9pt with a body frame as big as it gets. Know your gun and it’s limitations and setup for and pick your shots. Most of all get out in the woods and take a youngster with you!!!
I live in southeast Michigan, been wanting to get a portable set up, idk if I want a saddle or a climber, I’m a crossbow and gun hunter and I feel if I get a saddle I’d only use it for gun, how much did your whole saddle setup cost?
@fessenden3337 hard to say cost actually. I have multiple saddle and climbing setups these days. Like everything there are more affordable options and expensive options. But these days a guy can get setup qith a decent saddle, sticks, platform, and basic accessories for $500-$600. Or you can drop $1000-$1500. It all just depends on what you want. Tons of great idiots out there in 2024 for a variety of price points.
2:59 Anyone else see the deer running away just above his orange hat?
@@piercemaday6409 those are vehicles on the highway.
