I've been meditating every day for a decade. It works if you stick at it daily. The first six weeks were phenomenal in terms of increases in executive function, mood regulation and the departure of long term depression and anxiety. I began with chanting a Buddhist mantra and still do that every day. My life is transformed.

It depends on the person, there's no one size fits all answer. I've just decided to stop mindfulness meditation after doing 20-40 mins daily for a little over 8 months in the hopes of alleviating severe metal health issues. Rather than help, my symptoms actually worsened. I later read this is the case for about 1 in 12 people who practice meditation, though of course it's still worth trying.

Any theory as to why you were negatively affected? Just 'luck of the draw' or is it, because your issues weren't caused/connected/worsened by being stressed?
You must be very disciplined, to stick to something that doesn't bring immediate relief for 8 months!

@@ryanwdavies1I am a Hindu so I follow my particular spiritual mantras and name chanting of Divine given by my Guru(He is God realized...left home at 13 years of age for God realization). The sacred mantra works like magic if given by potent master and one is humble, disciplined enough...It's common to get divine experiences. Better than any form of substances. And direct connection with Blissful source aka GOD.
But skeptics can just focus their attention in the midst of eyebrows or at the heart. You can listen meditative music if u want. In less than 1 month u will observe major difference in your thought patterns and hence your life will start changing. More happy, hopeful, empathetic, loving individual to say the least.
Added benefits to those who can believe:
      1. You are God's part and parcel stuck in the material universe becoz of free will.
      2. Two types of play: Play in material nature and Play in spiritual nature(Abode of God).
      3. Spiritual practice like meditation helps u come in present which only exists amd is the only truth.
      4. God and we as spiritual soul have the one commonality and that is awareness/now/preseent. It is the gateway to all spiritual secrets and our real eternal home.

    Neuroplasticity is awesome.
I was able to rewire my brain to get around the dysfunction causing my Dystonia.
The movement disorder specialists, said Dystonia was incurable and could only be managed with Botox and anti-convulsive medications.
I wasn't prepared to spend the second half of my life spasticated by Dystonia.
I was introduced to neuroplasticity by a specialist chiropractor, who had studied neurology.
It took around 8 months to rewire my brain. I've now been Dystonia free for 11 years.

I can absolutely attest to this. I started ADHD medicine to help me fix my life. I was able to get brief moments of normalcy, but still had ongoing depression, health scares, unhealthy habits, terrible sleep and anxiety. I started diaphragmatic breathing, meditation, regular exercise and more sun exposure (with SPF of course).
The difference is night and day. I feel like my passion for life is returning and I am regaining peace, emotional balance and more physical strength. It is still early days for me, but I am sure if the good habits stick I can re train and heal my brain.

Meditation - 20 minutes every morning has absolutely changed my life for the better. In my case I first needed to deal withy my mental Health, medically. I have a pretty serious family history of depression and anxiety, so i needed to find ( The Right) doctor and the right medication. When I did that I was able to add mediation - and other “ self care” practices and the combination has enabled me to stay mentally healthy and operate at a high level - both in my professional and personal life.

    • @ForeverMasterless
      @ForeverMasterless 9 місяців тому

@@joanlockhart4719 The best meditation has nothing to do with youtube. Sit down on a meditation mat in a quiet room, left hand cradled in the right, shoulders relaxed, back straight, chin lightly tucked and eyes unfocused. Set a timer for 45 minutes. And just sit. At first you will be doing many things other than sitting. Your mind will be thinking of past and future, but just try to watch what the mind does. Observe the thoughts as they come and go. If you do this everyday eventually you will reach the end of thoughts, this is place Dogen calls dropping off of body and mind. In other words you stop being a person doing a meditation while trying not to think of ten thousand things, self drops away and you simply become the activity of sitting. This is the heart of zazen or "just sitting" meditation. You are not a person, and you definitely are not a thing. You are an event, an activity. 13.8 years ago the big bang happened and it's still happening, and that's you, you're that explosion.

He discovered that doing something challenging---such as learning a musical instrument, learning a foreign language, learning a new skill--actually changed the grooves and folding patterns in the human brain. Exactly. I'm 40 years old and live in the center of beautiful Heidelberg Germany. I inhabit a flat with 2 students, to save money. I can walk to work (ICU nurse), but I have an old used bike for less then 200 bucks. I don't need to travel. Heidelberg is paradise. No car, no kids. I only work part time so I have enough money for my hobbies: Bouldering, Running, Gaming on Sony PlayStation and Nintendo Switch (if our house burns down, I can't lose those games, I own them in the cloud). Life is beautiful nowadays, why would I waste it at work. I only buy cloths when I really need them, mostly cheap.
You can eat healthy for 5 bucks a day (coffee included). It's easy: stick to things that have only 1 ingredient, but no isolates like sugars and oils (you can throw them together obviously for a meal)
I consider whole grain pasta to be healthy, but you should have them split up in to maximum 2 meals a day. Other than that I eat oats, nuts and vegetables. Only drink water, coffee, and tea without additives. If you're vegan have your vit.B12 and a good source of omega-3 fatty acids (chia seeds, walnuts), maybe vit.D if you're a nightshift worker or not out in the sun much, and you're good. Once in a while if you have an easier day try to eat nothing for that day. I'm 40 years old, athletic, everyone thinks I'm much younger. Take good care of your bodies folks 💟🌌☮️

Very good episode. A particular good, brief overview of mindfulness here on YT is a TEDx talk by Prof. Shauna Shapiro, a clinical psychologist, titled "The Power of Mindfulness: What You Practice Grows Stronger." My favorite one-line summary of mindfulness comes from that talk: Mindfulness is intentionally paying attention, with kindness. The kindness bit is important, and I wish it was mentioned in this report. One way it's important is in regard to the issue of distractions and mind-wandering during meditation, which Melissa mentioned here. In mindfulness meditation, it's important to respond to distractions with kindness, not judging or shaming yourself about it, no matter how strong or repetitive the distractions-just quietly turn your attention back. -Tom

The main thing that is helping me rewire my brain is by constantly listening and watching content on neuroplasticity, well being, self help, psychology and health. I have certain podcasts and books that i am spending almost all my time absorbing. In repetition. I found content that was very effective for me in the sense of taking action. I listen to the same podcasts and read the same books multiple times.
Its extremely hard to stay conscious and aware therefore you can hack that by absorbing content that is reinforcing and reminding you of the actions you need to take to think more positively and CHOSE to make the right choices.
Its much easier to change when you are constantly absorbing content that is reinforcing the change and encouraging.
For 1 month dont watch much TV/shows. Just watch podcasts or read books that are about changing habits, resilience, perseverance, neuroplasticity etc...
You will be compelled to take action.

I was never big into the spiritual meditative thing as much as I wanted to be. I needed more convincing science as to why and how it could work. Recently I learned about the effects of Heart-Rate Variability cluing us in on what state our autonomic nervous system is in: Sympathetic-driven, or Parasympathetic-driven? Performing deep, slow breathing exercises in tune with meditation helps your brain take back control from the flight-or-flight system and has a significant difference on HRV as well. This has personally helped me and I hope it helps others. Look into it, but the gist is to aim for your resonance frequency which on average is around 6 breaths per minute.

Im not religious and believe in science, but I pray and meditate everyday. I can’t meditate in the traditional sense, I’m too hyper. However, I have memorize several prayers and say them in my mind trying think about the deeper meaning of each word, sentence, phrase and paragraph of the prayers. I often pray/ meditate in the shower to drown out any ambient noise. The Saint Francis prayer has had probably the greatest effect on me and my outlook, not because it’s a Christian prayer, but because it reminds me I need to be kind and forgiving and 99% of my fears are self centered and triggers for my character defects, which causes me discord and reduces harmony. It only takes me about 10 minutes in the morning and I’m less likely to become agitated and puts my thinking on a higher plane. Like anything worth having it takes practice, but it’s changed my thinking, which has changed my life. I used to be uncomfortable in my own skin, but for years now I love being me 98% of the time.
I have found, for me, happiness is the byproduct of always trying to do the next right thing. The happiest people I know are the most truly generous (not expecting something in return) and the most unhappy people are the most selfish. Being truly generous hasn’t always come to me as naturally as some, but over time I’ve gotten better and try to remember its progress, not perfection I’m after.
I end my meditation with a reminder to divorce my thinking from self pity, dishonesty and self seeking motives and try to have acceptance, patient and understanding with others.

7:42, she sits quiet, with waterfall in background.... they talk of getting simple, letting go of complexity. It's all great. What comes to my mind, is something similar, but a higher way. One day I prayed about deeply wanting to go to Lake Michigan, about 40 minutes from my home, to be on the beach, experience nature, be at peace, walk by waves. Sometimes I like to jump in the waves. (But many tragedies have happened there as well; you need to wear a life jacket. They too often tell people everything except to do that- it is the one assurance no one in your party will drown). Anyways. I prayed that I have too much to do, but feel so much desire to go to the peace of the crashing waves, wind, sunshine, sand, beauty, open sky. I prayed, as I so often do, & read a daily Bible devotional Word. To my amazement, this was the passage for the day, Words of Jesus, in John 4: "If you had asked me, I would have given to you Living Water, & you would not thirst again." It has been true of my life, that the #1 source of joy, peace, healthy, wholeness, help, answers, wisdom, purpose, clarity, protection, provision, has been to live life led by the Holy Spirit of Jesus, always turning to God. I've seen a gazillion Word miracles, like the example here. The day I asked if Jesus is real, not a myth, 25 years ago, the Bible devotion that day was the only passage in the whole Bible, that assures you Jesus is not a myth. 2 Peter 1:16-19. Life is for a spiritual purpose, & Jesus promises to be with us always, to overcome all challenges, if we choose to turn to Him. He offers, no force.

It's probably the greatest failure of psychotherapy. Something more robust is needed for a person to rewire their brain and gain better control of their destiny......IMO meditation can be a solution in this regard based on personal experience. Depending on how meditation is used, it has the ability to reach deep into the damaged regions of the mind and provide healing that is permanent and transformative in terms of improved mood and behavior.

People with CPTSD will actually benefit more from meditation and several studies show it’s effectiveness. You dont necessarily have to go out into the mountains or forests to meditate. You can simply do it in a day to day vibrant environment, though, it might be challenging for beginners. The point is to simply be aware of whatever is happening at the moment, for example, when you are at home and there is a noise in the back, and let's say, your kids are playing which makes it challenging for you to focus, you simply need to be aware of the sound or how you are feeling at the moment when you hear such noise, disturbed or annoyed? Whatever you are feeling, experience it fully without naming the feeling. This simple practice alone already fullfuls the criteria of meditation.

It's my pleasure to share my book here, I wrote it to tell the story of my time with the IRGC in the Iranian military but to let people know how meditation affects executive function as well. Initially, I meditated every day, then three times a week. Having used prescription opiates off and on for 27 years, I quit in 2019. I was a highly functioning addict. Meditation has changed my entire life and lifestyle. I haven’t meditated for the past year however the positive impact it has made on my prefrontal cortex can’t be underestimated.

Something so simple leads to such potentially profound shifts in our lives improving all aspects of life significantly! In the work I do, that's the focus - every day, small amounts trump larger inconsistent sits.

He also meditates two hours everyday, one hour in the morning and one hour in the night, I have noticed how innovative, skilful ,resourceful and how easily he can use his brain to make things easy at home with his own innovations ,that normal people would probably buy things outside . He’s engineered his mind to such an extent that it’s naturally innovative, his mind is thinking and free to explore confidently to various solutions that is used to fix things at home.

It begs the question of whether meditation without the Eastern philosophy of life Buddhism imparts is really that beneficial over the long term and whether modern day stressors are being channeled by it giving the illusion of peace to allow greater productivity and success, something I consider will ultimate result in a catastrophic breakdown. Who wants to live on a constant knife edge if meditation is only masking the harmful consequences on one’s body.

@@brynleytalbot778 Speaking from my own experience, when I first started practicing mindfulness meditation I did so as a subtle way of making how I felt go away. Ultimately, that didn't work. Once I decided to start using mindfulness meditation as a practice of building the skill of allowing things to be as they are, things changed. It's funny, things changed because I chose to accept them as they were. Without that attitude shift, it was sort of like I was stepping on the gas really hard and then pulling over to try to cool off the engine, then stepping on the gas really hard and pulling over again to cool off the engine. I finally stopped stepping on the gas really hard.

What exactly should I be focusing at? The process of breathing involves nostrils, sinus, breath canal, lungs and diaphragm. Where should my attention be? Or is it that it's ok to shuffle between them?

    • @kims705
      @kims705 9 місяців тому

In meditation, especially in practices focusing on breath awareness, where you direct your attention can vary based on the specific technique you're using or your personal preferences. The key is to maintain a gentle focus on some aspect of your breathing to help anchor your mind in the present moment, reducing distractions and fostering a state of calm awareness. Here are a few common focal points:
      1. **Nostrils**: Noticing the sensation of air entering and exiting through your nostrils can be a focal point. You might feel the coolness as you inhale and warmth as you exhale.
      2. **Diaphragm**: Feeling the rise and fall of your diaphragm or abdomen with each breath can be very grounding. This focus helps in deepening the breath and promoting relaxation.
      3. **Chest**: Observing the expansion and contraction of your chest is another option. This can be particularly useful for those who find abdominal breathing challenging.
      4. **The flow of breath**: Some practices encourage awareness of the breath's journey through the body, from the nostrils down to the lungs and back out. This can create a more dynamic focus as you visualize or sense the path of the breath.
      5. **The whole body**: In some meditation practices, the aim is to become aware of the breath's impact on the entire body, noticing how each breath brings a wave of relaxation or energy throughout.
It's okay to shuffle between these focal points, especially as you're learning what works best for you. Some people find that their focus naturally shifts during a meditation session, and that's fine. The important part is to bring a non-judgmental attention back to your chosen focus whenever you notice your mind has wandered. Over time, you may find that a particular aspect of the breath keeps your attention more effectively, but exploring different focal points can be a valuable part of your meditation practice.

Mindfulness is just the beginning. I spent tens of thousands of hours on silent retreat and taught mindfulness classes and retreats for ten years. It helped heal serious childhood trauma and gave me a sense of having my head above water, but maintaining the practice was exhausting and did not help me understand how the world works or my purpose within it. It was cold and lonely.
It took nearly dying from multiple chronic illnesses for me to surrender to God and stop trying to do everything off my own will. I became a baby learning how to walk. I had to learn mercy, humility, and how to prioritise nourishing my body, soul and spirit above all else.
Last year I began praying and reading the bible every day, and listening to a wide range of Christian voices. I have been scrutinising what has happened on many levels, and the best way I can describe it is that all those years of meditation provided enough silence and space to clear enough crusty layers for me to access the ultimate nature of reality, i.e.the Creator of everything, and that felt good because he wants us to feel good! I was surrendered to his will, but only partially and with a tiny speck of understanding how the world works, which is why it all eventually fell apart.
I have very happily surrendered my entire life to Jesus now and it is all coming together beautifully. My focus is one-pointedly on God. I trust him completely because I have taken the time to know who and what he is. I know he is the only way out of this hell, and that he isn't saving me because I'm worthy or good, but because that's what he does when we are willing. I am his child, so he helps me. I earned nothing, I just said "hello".
I love this verse... "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." John 15:5
My advice to anyone reading this who really wants to be free from suffering is to begin by saying "hello" to the God who created the heavens and the earth. This is the God above all worldly gods, no yin and yang light and dark equality, no goddesses or angels, no spirit guides or mantras, no breath, no bus stop, no eight-week course. The source of all life, the love and light of God, is above everything created. Begin your journey to being a branch on that vine and you will find the joy and purpose you were designed for.
