Water melon which are produced in , Europe, USA , Middel East and rest of Asia are always very high quality but in Japan the prices of not only Melons are very are terribly high but other fruit too.
If people living in other countries than Japan , they still can easlily afford all kind of fruit including melons but looking to the Average Japanese salary, it looks very difficult to buy in the quantity which is desireable and necessary to be healthy.

Japan is a cold climatic region, watermelons need 6 to 7 hours of sunlight to grow, thats the reason they grow them in green houses and take proper care and sell them for high prices.. same for miazaki mangoes.. nothing more than this..

I grew up eating this watermelon. Japan more likely got the original seedling from my birth country as they did occupy the country for several years. All that polishing and being cultivated under a green house and choosing the best fruit to ripen or by limiting the number available for sale is their justification for charging exorbitant price. But then in Japan the majority of fruit is vastly overpriced.
