- Salt Hydrolysis is the acid-base reaction of either the cation or anion with water to release H+ or OH-, making the solution acidic or alkaline respectively.
For instance, when sodium ethanoate, CH3COONa is dissolved in water, CH3COO- can hydrolyse in water to give OH- as it is the conjugate base of weak acid CH3COOH. Therefore the solution of sodium ethanoate is alkaline and pH is above 7.
In this video tutorial, we will use salt hydrolysis to determine the nature of solutions of sodium ethanoate, sodium chloride and ammonium chloride. Watch this video now!
