How hard is it to change the track on a Yamaha Apex?

  • the fella that dropped off this apex for the motor swap also wants a new to him track installed on it as well. so in this video I change the track on it so he can take the sled on a trip up north for a rip with the boys 🍻

    I know the apex front to back and never thought to change that bearing on the clutch side like that! Super cool! Very good filming and doing things one handed! Now I see why the one handed beer opener works so well! haha

    This video was absolutely key in getting my drive shaft out so I can get a seized speedo bearing off.also watched 1200 oil tank removal.jesus mary and Joseph!!!

    Thank you Pete for this video. Because of it I picked up a cheap apex that needed bearings. Because of this video, I'm willing to try and fix it up. If I can't get it done, you're just a couple of hours away lol

    11:45 I usually pull my skids every two years. I'm thinking I just swap every bearing at that point or at least those important upper ones and the rest axel. Pretty hard to check or do anything about mid season. Might be overkill but for $6/ bearing pretty cheap while you have the skid out. Good point on that drive bearing. I should swap that I've been pulling seal and add it in g grease annually

    Somehow I missed you putting chain case lube in,and the Speedo gear housing cover on,and tightening cog bearing collar set screw.

    You make it look so easy when most sled mechanix say Yamaha is the worst sled to change put a track. Which is the reason I haven't extended my 08 Nytro 121" to a 137". Guess you could say i let them get in my head, lol. Keep up the AWESOME tutorial videos!!! They are definitely being used within my friends network. THANK YOU and RIDE HARD during this Season, cause we never know when it will end. Also don't want any REGRETS when the Season is over!!!! LMAO

I followed ur engine swap build on My 1995 kitty katt sled that I gave $50 for..runs alott better with a 6.5 hp briggs motor in it VS the 2.5 hp?? Or 3.0 hp?? Shitt sack stock motor that came in it.     I did all that this spring on my Rx Warrior when I pulled the suspension and also changed out all the drive bearings. Looks almost identical to the Apex. You make it look easier though. 😆 I picked up a couple of little tricks if I have to do it again which will make it easier. Awesome video !!

    Big job! The camera went fast at the end, did you put gear oil in it?!! I know you prob did but good to show people how much and what kind. I like that sled...might be next if I don't get a bombiiiii!

      it is a bit of a job but not too bad I'd say..and yeah I forgot to show putting the oil in but it is in there lol 🤣. I usually use klotz chain case lube or just a good quality gear oil and the chain case doesn't hold alot of oil but it does have a little dipstick to check for the proper amount. the apex is a great trail sled! cheers 🍻

      thanks! sorry I forgot to show it in the video but I just back the lock nut off and thread the adjuster in until its finger tight and then tighten the lock nut down and she's all good to go! hope that helps 🍻

    Hey there Pete wondering if you have any tips on burping a cooling system. I just changed a water pump on a xlt 600 triple and wondering if I got all the air out

      you can try lifting the back of the sled up to try and burp some air out of the system or if there are rubber hose connections at the rear heat exchanger you can loosen the clamp and lossen the hose to let air out until coolant leaks out. hope that helps 🍻

    Will the apex skid swap into an 97 vmax 600? not sure if the track lengths are the same but would love to do a mono shock skid in mine.

      I think ya could get it in there, both would have 121 tracks just might have to relocate some of the mount points maybe..🤔 but grab a case of beer and get a buddy to give ya a hand and you'll get it in there! cheers 🍻

    That's nothing try replacing the track 100km in the Bush when it's -30 yes it can and has been done. One thing I'll say the track isn't very pliable When it's that cold makes for a tough time.

      it is a bit of a job to change! you gotta pull the chaincase apart and remove the jackshaft out the left side of the sled (secondary clutch side) i would recommend a service manual if you're going to do it or UA-cam it lol. I don't have any videos of doing it but I'm sure there are some out there! the bearing is tapered so you have to make sure you put it on the right way! I hope that helps 🍻

    My nytro came with that ripsaw track is was in worse shape when I bought it, those in my opinion are the worst tracks made by camoplast, original ripsaw is a junk track!
