The Scramasax, carried by the Saxons and Vikings between the 4th and 10th centuries, was utilized as both a tool and a weapon. Carried horizontally at the back of the belt, the Scramasax provided the spearman with a close-quarters weapon when needed, and its broad blade could handle many day-to-day chores. The ancestry of the Scramasax, which evolved from similar weapons in bronze (and later iron) used by the Celts, is portrayed in the decoration of the guard and pommel.

Not really accurate but I love the looks enough to buy one except for the fact of the threaded pommel, that's bullshit. This is awesome Hanwei make it RIGHT.
Hanwei actually based this on a museum piece and it is pretty close(the museum version had a different design on the pommel). So it's pretty accurate for that they were basing it on, it's just that what it was based on was actually a Frankish seax, not a viking seax.
There are basically no knife laws in NH so I could probably carry that without too big a probpem

In Georgia if you have a carry permit you can carry a short gun (pistol with a barrel length 12" or less) or a "knife". Knife, the legal definition for carry permits, in plain English is as follows.
Knife - A cutting instrument designed for the purpose of offense and defense consisting of a blade that is greater than five inches in length which is fastened to a handle (note the lack or a length limit on 'knives' so a sword seems to fit the definition. not sure police would agree but legally I think a case could be made.)
As of 2012 Georgia passed this law:
Knife Preemption Counties, municipalities, and consolidated governments cannot regulate the possession, manufacture, sale, or transfer of a knife or any cutting instrument with a blade, unless it is in regards to a courthouse or government building.(Effective July 1st, 2012, 16-11-136.)
So pretty sure that with a permit carrying a Scramasax would be fine...
Very nice knife. The only issue I'd have is the handle is a bit long, A good grip happens naturally when your hand is touching the front and pommel at the same time.
Edge is on the wrong side. Looks like cheap crap.
Texas legal update. After Sept 1st 2017 that weapon becomes totally legal to carry with only a few restrictions on locations (court, church, 51% bar, school sporting events)
I actually own two of these and love them! With some patience you can sharpen both sides to the point that they start shaving hair and I prefer to use the long side of the blade. Wicked stabbing dagger, feels like a short sword, and can definitely cut. I'd avoid chopping with it, though. I feel like it puts too much stress on the tang.
Actually it's very much illegal to carry something like that around here in Texas.

I like that knife blade, but I don't like the threaded pommel. I'd rather have a traditional seax handle on it.
I don't think it was used for thrusting because there isn't much to prevent your hand from sliding up the blade when it encounters resistance in a stab. That being said, there's no way to know what sort of guard could have been incorporated into the design historically, as all organic guards have more or less decomposed by now.

Nice knife. I am a big fan of the seax. It was equally important as a close combat melee weapon to the swordsmen and axe wielders in the shield wall as it was to the spearmen. Bernard Cornwall writes a vivid description of its use as such in "The Last Kingdom."
This is a fairly well made display piece, it's not historically accurate. Not really designed well for use, but pretty to have on a shelf or take to Ren Faire. Despite what the local laws are if you carry a knife this large within a populated area (largish non rural city) more times than not you will be stopped and at least questioned. Why is it that some of the blades on KoA offer the sharpening service and many don't. I see that you suggested the sharpening service for this blade but on your website the box to check for the additional charge and service isn't available to chose.
Some aren't fit for it regarding how long it takes to sharpen them edge thickness, etc. You can contact customer service to inquire about a sharpening service if it is not available on the website

Actually in Texas up until like the 1st of September of 2017 we were actually pretty strict about blade length no matter if it was fixed or not. Now though you can carry anything. Spear, sword, knife, etc.
As far as I'm aware most actual seaxes were single edged.
At least I have yet to see a surviving example of a double edged seax sized blade from the Viking period.
Yeah same with the ones I've seen. This one is just tapered on the back no edge.

On a different note, I wanted to ask, whether you could review the Hanwei Bastard sword. I've been eyeing it for a while now, yet I can't find a decent review of it.
And the fact that the bastard sword on darksouls is a direct copy of it, makes it even cooler.

It was carried horizontally so when you sat on a bench, be it at a table or on a ship, the knife would be out of the way. And only Free men could carry it.
i'm not from texas, rather north carolina, but I'm unaware of any laws against it here. as far as I know strict laws about knives in general aren't a thing in NC which is good because the majority of knife laws are dumb as hell. this isn't something you can hide either.
I wonder if it's the same in VA.
In VA this would have to be assumed to treated like a bowie knife, which you could open carry but not conceal. The case law on what is "open" is interpreted as "it better be visible from just about any angle if a cop stops you", so you shouldn't be wearing it on your belt while driving.

Another great here , Tom. Really a sharp one too. Love this design. I say that in all the knife clipS , videos etc. So this is from the Vking era ,correct? What happened you were having difficulty with that branch you were trying to lop off or were you just testing the effectiveness of the blade. Love the cutting motion it has too. Don't bro , you will alway receive great comments from NO MATTER WHAT BLADD IS DEMONSTRATED. You have my word on that. Great one. Keep in touch. I live in Oregon, and it's totally legal to carry as long as it isn't concealed, and there was a specific case where it was ruled that having it be in a sheath was not considered concealed. So I could totally wear it out and about town.

In Texas, while technically not illegal to carry a knife of this size on your person, you are likely to draw unwanted attention to yourself and you can't just go out in public with it strapped to your side. Texas knife laws are just as vague as anywhere else. They could pretty much bust you for anything if they wanted but the unwritten rule is just use common sense and you won't get hassled.
Texas Knife Laws:
(a) A person commits an offense if the person intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly carries on or about his or her person an illegal knife, or club if the person is not:
(1) on the person’s own premises or premises under the person’s control; or
(2) inside of or directly en route to a motor vehicle or watercraft that is owned by the person or under the person’s control….
§ 46.01. Definitions
…..(6) “Illegal knife” means a:
(A) knife with a blade over five and one-half inches;
(B) hand instrument designed to cut or stab another by being thrown;
(C) dagger, including but not limited to a dirk, stiletto, and poniard;
(D) bowie knife;
(E) sword; or
(F) spear.
(7) “Knife” means any bladed hand instrument that is capable of inflicting serious bodily injury or death by cutting or stabbing a person with the instrument.

As far as I know...in England something like this is perfectly legal. To own or import that is. Not carry. You can't really carry anything without good reason (going to HEMA practice/reenactment/filmmaking). And self defence doesn't qualify. Nor does "for the fashion statement"
Nice looking knife/dagger. Is it a Sax? Absolutely not. A sax is single edged. It has a rat tail driven into the handle and on the nicer ones it goes all the way through and is hammered to expand the end and hold it in place. I think the correct word for that is pean but not going to find that in an modern dictionary. Oh yeah it lacks a real guard so it was apparently used for slashing even though the design of the blade suggests stabbing. If that doesn't compute all I can say is I wasn't consulted.
Is this particular design based on a historical specimen?
In my city in Canada, you can't carry knives over 6 inches in length.

This is a really beautiful piece, I'm considering buying one soon. I don't know the quality of Hanwei knives, but I own their swords, which I'm very satisfied with.
One of the rare occasions where the sheath is better than the blade. :-) This seax has my least favorite hilt.
