GTO's a good bang for the buck, but like most cars mentioned- it's not a sports car! The C5 Corvette is. Sports cars are typically known to have 2 doors, 2 seats (a couple slight exceptions), be light and agile, with excellent handling, at least 'sprightly' acceleration, and sporty styling. Even a Miata is more of a sports car than most of these cars mentioned. I'd say the newer GTO with LS2 is more of a sleeper-muscle car or a powerful GT type. I like the 'wolf in sheep's clothing' theme the GTO has going, but it's too big and 'conservative' looking to be a sports car. Corvette was always considered "Americas only sports car", but they don't advertise that anymore. 😊 No disrespect to the GTO, as it is better than Mustang with strong Corvette DNA!
Bob Sagit Well the auto trans came from a truck and it’s dogshit, so it’s no wonder. It’s the choice to go with if you want to drag race it however. Swap in a 4L80E instead of the 4L60E and you’re good to go.
01 Cobra. Saw one lately on Craigslist for 10kish with 50k miles. Fairly reliable, little bit of power, and I just love that body style. First car was a v6 of the same year and it’s still going 😤
E36 328i for roughly $3,000 $600 to refresh the cooling system $1,000 for BC racing Coilovers $500 for Poly Bushing overhaul $100 for Reinforcement plates $1000 for E36 M3 wheels and tires $3800 left over for brakes, lsd from a M3, new control/camber arms. At that point you would still have money left over for a nice steering wheel and seat set up, or a few power mods like M50 mani swap, cams and tune, maybe all of it if you stay cheap on brakes. You could get a worn out e36 M3 for 10k, or have a really well sorted out 328i that would be a blast to drive.

@@Szostek. The 350z is also a two seater. The G35 is extremely similar and 4 seats though. Also the miata is extremely underpowered in comparison. For 10k you could even get a 370z/G37. Horsepower definitely isn't everything, but you can't say "Miata is better in every way except it has 2 seats" when its under half the power. Also some people don't like convertibles and there are downsides to convertibles. I'm not going to hate on the miata or anything, but if you told me right now I could have either a 10,000$ 370z or a 10,000$ miata I'd take the 370z for sure.
Also I was surprised there wasn't a single FRS suggestion. You can get them for around 10k$. E46 M3 for under $10k? You’re only looking at high mileage SMG variants. And most likely, they’ll need subframe reinforcement and possibly valve adjustment and rod bearing replacement. Manual transmission variants with decent to low miles that are up to date on maintenance catch a premium and are appreciating in value.
Having owned one myself, either all those guys saying E46 M3 haven't checked the prices lately or.....actually that's the only reason I could think of. A sub-$10K E46M is garaunteed to be a problem child.

No GTO?!!! 400HP and 3700lbs at worst.
“Family mans Corvette”. Z06 transmission, C5 engine, C5 brakes. And loaded with alcantera!
One of the worst autos I’ve ever driven
Bob Sagit Well the auto trans came from a truck and it’s dogshit, so it’s no wonder. It’s the choice to go with if you want to drag race it however. Swap in a 4L80E instead of the 4L60E and you’re good to go.

E36 328i for roughly $3,000
$600 to refresh the cooling system
$1,000 for BC racing Coilovers
$500 for Poly Bushing overhaul
$100 for Reinforcement plates
$1000 for E36 M3 wheels and tires
$3800 left over for brakes, lsd from a M3, new control/camber arms.

Surprised only 1 mention of the 350z for reliability, fun, maintanance cost and aftermarket support it gets no better.
Miata is better in every way except it has 2 seats
