I know that Power Windows/Hold Your Fire are not fave amongst most, but these 2 releases have some of the most technical playing and tech funk of all their release. Love this.
@@StanleyRodgers Great string arrangements too on PW. Pristine capture of Neil's drums on HYF...I'm sure their first digitally recorded album...hence it's more for an analytical mood...a great headphone album...superb musicianship as ever.
Anne Dudley of the great synth band Art of Noise (and many movie soundtracks) did the string arrangements. I couldn't believe Rush and Art of Noise crossed paths!
Hold Your Fire was the first Rush album I owned…the synths are for the most part pretty tasteless but the songs apart from a few moments are ok….Force 10, Time Stand Still and Mission are worth the albums existence alone.
LOTS of practice. You have to learn each thing on their own to the point where you know them inside and out and then figure a way to marry them together. Not easy at all. Then do it in front of 15,000 every other night.
Great playing as usual, but I always marvel at the fact that you own a Wal and a set of Taurus pedals. Close to $20,000 dollars worth of gear alone between those two things.
@@66TJPmy question is, where do i get one? i’ve searched high and low on the internet and i’ve only found 1. it’s fretless mk 2 and it’s listen at $14.5k and $1.2k shipping, and that’s obviously not what they really go for. at least i fucking hope not.
Well done man! Out of all the RUSH videos I have seen you done, this took the most work, musically. Hard as hell song. I figured it might be easier on my L2, what with the crazy neck and all, but no. I have a Wal myself, and paid big for the gold hardware, my "Geddy Special". That's one HEAVY ass bass, and you definitely need a padded strap, but it's 100% Geddy Lee! You sound awesome, man! You should be in a RUSH tribute, as you sound better than 99.999% of the bass players I have heard even attempt RUSH!
This song still has me twisted up, got bits and pieces of it but yet to glue it all together. Folks like you that put forth the effort really help those like myself that have wrestled with it for far too long. Watching you had me saying "duh" to myself on a couple of parts. So thanks!
Well done. Such a great tribute and I appreciate that you show the mastery of Geddy Lee. Lots of great bass players out there and I wouldn’t say Geddy is the best, but he is the ultimate package. Not many of the greats also sing, play keys, Taurus pedals, have the body of work and create complete compositions and arrangements. That alone, in my opinion, puts him at the top. We are all blessed to have lived in the era of Rush and I don’t think we’ll ever experience anything like them, ever again.
Thank you for your compliments and thank you for taking the time to watch.. ...and very well said. Geddy is one of a kind and just makes it look so easy. A great example of what hard work and determination to the craft can produce. We are fortunate to have been alive in the era of RUSH. There will never be anything like them again. Ever.
OMG. Just watching you play that is amazing. I'm not a musician and moving your fingers with such Precision consistency and timing seems superhuman to me. That's amazing and kind if hypnotic. Geddy Lee's doing that AND singing and doing some keyboard work? That seems impossible!
People have no idea how rare these Mk1 bases are. I owned a red Geddy Lee Wal bass for about 7 years, and it sounded completely wrong for the HYF era stuff. It had a much wider horn and was too warm and lacked the midrange twang. I'm also convinced Pete (RIP) changed the electronics a bit at the time as well. THIS black Mk1 is the bass you need if you want this exact tone. Ironically, the red Geddy Lee Wal just won't deliver it. It was always fun to take it out of the case and watch jaws literally hit the floor, as it was the most stunning instrument I have ever seen. I paid $5,200 for it in 1999 and then sold it for $5,200 in 2006, sight unseen back to England.
Very accurate. It's a frightening level 11 task that even the best of them fail. Getty is an animal. When you look at hear what was and hear what is out there, there's a lot of extremely talented and skilled bass players from around the world. I don't believe in a "GOAT" or he/she is the best because of all the different parameters involved in judging any particular musician. But sometimes the debate is silenced and every now and again there's one that stands out.
Hello Robert... I learned this song not long after it was released. It probably took a couple of weeks before I was comfortable with it ... When I decided to do this video, alll of these years later, I worked up the song when I had time in-between work and life, for about a week or so just to get it as close as possible.. Thanks for watching !
Fantastic! Good show... er, show of hands?! ;) I was wondering, would you mind sharing the settings you have dialed in on the bass knobs and what strings you're using? I'm assuming they're Rotosound FunkMasters? I'm particularly curious about that low-pass settings on each pup, pup-blend, and the pick-attack setting (I'm assuming it's on). :)
I do not keep records of settings on my bass or amps but I can say that the bass was full up on everything and perhaps I favored the bridge pickup on the pickup blend.... The strings are Rotosound RS66LD stainless steel roundwounds. When I used to have a Steinberger XL-2, I tried the Funkmasters but they were way too thin and rubbery with no bottom end so I never even wanted them on the Wal. Tanks for watching!
I'm really sad about Neil too. I love all your videos you play the shit out of these basses. I just wanted you to know that you're doing both his memory and all of us fans a service by playing their songs the way you do. Thank you!
@@andyarnette9220 I wouldn’t get into golf, if I were you. Good equipment costs that amount and you need [want] to upgrade every few years or be okay with giving shots to the field! Bottom line...buy the bass - and thank me later!

This is by far my favorite bass cover of this song. Great job!
Thanks !
Terrific!! Brilliantly played. Truly inspired and full of spirit.
Incredible incredible cover of this song. My favorite era of Rush
The wal and those chickin'-pickin' ghost notes of "The Big Money". Thumbs up.
Exceptional tightness and timing.
Power Windows and Hold Your Fire are my two favorite RUSH albums besides the given Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, and a few others.
The Wal era. Geddy was on another level then. The whole band was re-invented and crisp.
