Uganda has never flirted with Communism since and considering some of the things that happened elsewhere that's quite a legacy. Thanks to Idi Amin, Ugandans didn't shit all over or try to overturn Colonial history, so they have some institutional continuity from back then. Ugandans are sensible. He also spent the vast majority of his life in the British Army and experienced a lot of combat. His sharpness and general attitudes are a result of that, but he obviously had a lot of natural charisma and intelligence.
His ability to see through the bullsh*t on the international stage is also pretty typical of a career soldier.
Anyway, having also spent most of my life in the British Army, Idi Amin feels very familiar to me. I recognise the traits and I can read past his words even. He was a man of unshakable honourable intent.
He took power because Uganda was heading down the road to Communism and someone had to take action. Uganda has never flirted with Communism since and considering some of the things that happened elsewhere that's quite a legacy.
Thanks to Idi Amin, Ugandans didn't shit all over or try to overturn Colonial history, so they have some institutional continuity from back then. Ugandans are sensible.
All of that would have gone out the window if Amin didn't step up when he did.
