RESTORING CAST IRON COOKWEAR ON THE OUTDOOR GRILL

- If you don't want to smell up your house with using the self cleaning oven method, try using the outdoor gas grill to restore that old, nasty cast iron skillet. It works just as well and keeps the wife happy too!
I just found a griswold 9 (609) flat round griddle today for $6 dollars at a thrift shop , can't wait to get it cleaned up. There's no rust but lots of old flaky seasoning. Thanksfor the tips!!
This is my go-to method. Keeps the smell out of the kitchen
Nice video! I inherited a bunch of cast-iron cookware from my parents and grandparents and I don’t own a self-cleaning oven. I do have a gas grill and your 2 restoration videos have shown me how to restore them! Thanks much!
I use my charcoal grill to clean my cast iron cookware. I grill often, even in winter, so after cooking I will place my cast iron on the grill, close the lid, an let it burn. The heat doesn't get to 650 with charcoal, and you may have to repeat this process a couple times, but no doubt it works.
I have my old grandmother's skillet and she used that thing for decades while I was with her growing up. That skillet gave her and my mother plenty of good service, and I use it to cook in also, and recently ordered a Lodge dutch oven, and a Stargazer 10.5 skillet to be used inside and outside because I live in the rural area of Arkansas where we lose electricity regularly, and sometimes for a day or more.
I have restored my cast iron skillets with the gas grill, and it worked great! I'd never do it in my oven. Too messy! I just got a 12" Lodge skillet for $1 at a yard sale. It has a little rust, so it's going in the grill!
I did two skillets in the oven on self cleaning and had billows of smoke pouring out of the stove. I had to open every window and door in the house and even had to sit outside for a bit because the smoke was so bad I couldn’t breathe. After about 90 minutes the smoke started clearing and I went back in the house. The next time I will try the gas grill method for sure.
Sweet. Looking forward to cast iron finds. That fryer is my favorite style of pan too. Thanks for sharing ghe knowledge also.
when I was growing up my mom and dad use to put there cast on a open wood fire to get the rust off would leave them over night and wash them up and then season them in the oven
Yep!
Have you thought about trying to strip cast iron in a big green egg? I noticed you have one in the back.
Looks like you are using a bull bbq which runs at least around $2500? Do you know if this fancy of a grill is required?
Any suggestions on maybe a cheaper grill that would do the trick?
Have you noticed any warping or issues with the grill handling that much heat?
Thanks!!
Wow, great find and it looks incredible!
Nice video, I have to keep my eye open for these at yardsales this year for sure! Love cooking in cast iron.
Nice pan! Great deal! I found a pretty nice unmarked ERIE skillet at a yard sale for $10 recently myself. It’s got some pitting on the back, and it’s a spinner (we have a gas range, so not a big deal), but it is nice and light and the cooking surface is beautiful!
Will this work on cast iron stove top grills?
That’s an awesome price on a rare item!! I got a number 27 wheat stick pan for $23 at a thrift store. Got to love a good deal congratulations!
I noticed it cleaned off the oil muck, but does it remove the crusty chunks as well. Anyhow I got to set aside a day to try, and thanks for reminding us to use a fresh tank when running wide open for a good while.
$8.98? Lucky lucky lucky. LOL
Cowboy kent cast iorn
Will the vinegar bath harm the iron? I did this process with my apartments grill. It worked but I got alot of rust after.
Definitely the best way to clean the old grime off. Turn the grill on high run it until it quits smoking. Couple minutes later turn off your grill. BTW cleans your grill too.
Thanks for the video
You should show how season the pans
I much prefer this method to the oven since I think it would keep the wife happier. :) Question: I've read on forums like castironcollector that oven or grill method may result in warping or cracking. Do you find that your pans stay true flat after going through this process?
Cast iron warping comes from uneven heating, or extreme high temps. If you heat your pan evenly and fairly gradually you should be fine on a gas grill.
Spinner pans are most likely caused by putting a pan on burner that is too small and then turning it on high. The center of the pan bottom becomes very hot while the outer edges are still cool. The iron in the center will expand slightly while the edges don’t, causing warping.
Iron melts at 2200 degrees, so a self cleaning oven or gas grill won’t get close to that. Avoid thermal shock and uneven heating and you should be good.
Throwing a pan that is cool from the AC in the house directly into a bonfire, is likely to crack it immediately. Tossing it into a bed of hot coals might cause uneven heat, and warping.
Putting them on a cold grill and then cranking it up won’t get them hot enough to cause damage. Just heat and cool them fairly gradually and evenly and it won’t be a problem.
Many CI experts don’t recommend it for the very real fear that a rookie might do it wrong, and ruin a valuable pan. Better safe than sorry is probably their thinking.
I agree. I just think tjats tooo much heat 650? Wow ? Maybe 500 ? Maybe!
Hey goat, I have an oven, but its not a self cleaning oven. What temperature and time would you recommend for the oven, as just bought a couple of CI skillets that could use a small bit of cleaning. The skillets aren't in bad shape, but I would like to bring it down to the bare bones and start the re seasoning on them
Hot as you can get it.
I did this and it didn't work :( So we cut the heat up and ran it again and it still didn't. Any other suggestions?
You might have to leave it in longer.
@@TheGoatMumbler We did the second time and now I have just the outside of the worse one in vinegar and its coming off. Thanks
nice video thank you
Would have been great to see the process you use to season your pans...
I have a couple of different videos that covers seasoning. Check them out. Thanks for watching.
Is it OK to sandblast these then go through the seasoning process?
If you have access to a sandblaster go for it!
Tjats a good question? Actually..?
I really need to get my cast pans back out
YOUNG MAN ,
AFTER U GET THUR CAST IRON IN THE OVER / OR BBQ PIT , NEED USE 1/2 POTATOES COARSE SALT RUB REAL GOOD / THEN SEASON IT ! .
That's the same way I do my cast iron
Yep the GRILLE is the only way to save the dog a room mate in HIS Home :-)))
Does this method work if they are rusty?
Yes. But you may need to leave them in a vinegar bath if rust persist.
@@TheGoatMumbler Have you ever tried Liquid Toilet Bowl Cleaner to remove the rust after the BBQ grill cleaning...does a fine job on tools etc and just thought it may work good for this too.
I tried this with my gas grill, and it didn't work, unfortunately. My temp only reached 550 degree Fahrenheit, so maybe that extra 100 degrees is when the magic happens.
If anyone sees this old video this is not a good way to clean cast iron. On really nice thin walled skillets it can warm or crack your pans.
Will a charcoal grill work?!!😮😮😮
If you can keep it really hot for a couple hours. Maybe.
That is an Iron Mountain Griswold chicken fryer. I will triple your investment and pay shipping. What do ya say?
GOD IS GOOD.
