      I watched the last episode of season 6 of The Americans today, having seen the finale of GOT less than 24 hours before and my god were those two exactly the opposite in terms of quality. So happy that I had at least one amazing TV-series experience today. The D&D should take some writing lessons from the writers of Americans. I mean this is something you'd consider a "normal" series, whereas GOT was epic, mysterious story based on fantasy world and with the way the GOT went for 4 seasons it's amazing that the feelings I had with the finale of The Americans was so much more intense than that of the GOT. GOT in fact didn't spark any feelings for me. It was like "okay, well that was it. time to go to sleep". If GOT didn't drop so badly it could've been the best series I've ever seen, but I have to say that Americans takes the cake for me. It stayed consistent all the way through, maybe the only somewhat weak time imo was the first half of season 2, but other than that, just straight up awesomeness all the episodes!

      In 1990 the first McDonald's restaurant opened in Moscow. Many people consider this event an important nail in the coffin of the USSR's collapse because McDonald's is a huge symbol of western capitalist culture. I think this scene with Phillip at the McDonald's is foreshadowing the inevitable end to the Soviet Union and a symbol of the Jennings's life as Soviet spies being over in the United States.

      He had no choice. If he stayed, he would face multiple charges of espionage, homicide and other felonies in the U.S. and might even face the prospect of capital punishment although I am not sure about it. In the best case scenario, we are talking 30 years in a federal prison.
      Don't forget that, in addition to killing countless people (including FBI agents and U.S. military) and ruining the lives of many others, Philip and Elizabeth significantly endangered the national security of the United States over the years by smuggling sensitive information on military projects (submarine propeller specs, the stealth bomber, Star Wars, etc.), planting bugs and moles in sensitive locations/offices, and even smuggling biological agents that were weaponized by the Soviets. I don't think there would be a lot of leniency for them in the U.S. even if they wanted to turn or make a deal.

      I deeply love The Americans and it's finale -- it brings me to tears still and I haven't enjoyed a series more. And I've watched lots of the other usual suspects and loved their finales: Sopranos, Breaking Bad, The Wire, etc... But--and it's been a while--I can't say that the finale of Six Feet Under has ever been exceeded. Appreciation of a finale requires watching the series, of course--and all the better if done so in small doses, when broadcast, as you'll live that much more life during the course of watching and will be that much more emotionally loaded for the finale. But if you want to binge a really emotionally intelligent, ground-breaking show that is criminally overlooked these days, check out Six Feet Under. The finale will stun you as deeply as this one, for some similar and some very different reasons (all im(very)ho, of course)

    I just finished The Americans. It was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I’m not often emotional when it comes to TV shows, but this time I kinda was. My initial hope was that the end of the show would coincide with the end of the USSR and that Paige and Henry could go on with their lives and Philip could be what he always wanted: a normal American.
    But this was a good finale too...

    • @michaelkores6860
      @michaelkores6860 3 роки тому +2

      Well, I am not sure if the end of the USSR would have enabled a soviet spy to just quit and live a "normal" life, after all Philip was livings as an illegal spy in the United States for decades and he commited multiple crimes including espionage, homicide, burglary and countless other. Maybe he could have defected more easily after the collapse of the USSR but do not forget that the KGP was succeeded by the SWR and FSB and I doubt that the SWR would forget one of their most valuable assets in the USA.

    Also loaded with symbolism. Matt's look at the McDonald's at the american -northamerican- family as he prepares to escape to the USSR is powerful. McDonald represents the symbol of EEUU consumerism and in part of the USA itself and its culture, Matt has already gotten used to EEUU life and likes it, but his heart is broken by greater causes he has to flee to the USSR.

  • @RonGavalik
    @RonGavalik 5 років тому +54

    There's so much that can be discussed about this closing. It's packed so tight, with so much needed information, and with such dramatic shots. Still, it's not overwhelming in the least. Quite the opposite. It's as smooth as a McDonald's (perfect product placement) milkshake.
    First, the way Stan finds out on his own completely validates his own character arc as a badass agent. When I originally watched the series, I was disappointed that he didn't kill Philip and Elizabeth. For all the heinous crimes they committed, I truly believed their arcs needed to have a bloody end. However, the way the filmmakers treated this is perfect. Soldiers who'd finished a job and simply wanted to go home, and Stan, a friend turned sudden nemesis honoring that request.
    Second, Philip's absolute sadness and honor to sacrifice the relationship with his son and leave a life he'd built for the sake of the unit is the epitome of honor. This is caught perfectly as he stares out the window of the McDonald's. He weeps on the inside.
    Third, Elizabeth's usual intellectual and logical approach to her job is suspended in her emotional desire to pick up Henry on their way out of the country. That was handled in a fast, yet powerful moment in the warehouse.
    Fourth, Paige. What can I say? Her standing on the train platform is the single most powerful sign of growth in such a short time span that I've ever seen on film. She went from flight on command to the self-realization that she is not her parents, and has a life to fulfill on her own. Beautifully done. I also have to say that this being shot on a train platform revitalized a once cliché moment in storytelling.
    Fifth, the Jennings' standing on the bridge overlooking Moscow was a surreal transformation from American back to Russian, built on a foundation of love for each other and for a movement larger than themselves.
    I could go on and on and on.

    In the age of Peak TV, The Americans is a show that was extensively overlooked. This comes as a plus. In a market where producers and media worry more in high ratings rather than quality, the americans was true to its nature, something that a few shows do nowdays. Beyond the awards and the recognition on high streaming media, the show stands out for its mature content and astounding development, not to mention the production quality.
    It appeals to the senses, to this old fashioned idea that wonders come from unexpected places.
    The Americans is to me a turning point on the way I conceive modern TV. In one point, this felt more than sheer entertainment. The only word I can think about is Storytelling. A term that sums up the craft of connecting beyond words, imagery, sounds... to appeal to the senses. To convey emotions.

    Damn it I want more! So many unanswered question's!
    1) What happens to paige? I see 3 options. She either turns herself in, assumes a new identity and attempts a normal life, or becomes a 2nd gen spy like the center wanted all along. She did go back to the safehouse and claudia was already gone.
    2) Speaking of Claudia did she really go back to russia? She lied so much I never believed anything her character said. Remember Paige has no idea what her mom did to Tatiana.. but if for some reason Claudia did go back to russia, will she go after Phillip and Elizabeth?
    3) What about Stans wife? Is she a damn spy or not? I think she is, but that's just my personal opinion.
    4) what about oleg? Will he ever get out of prison? I felt horrible for his character arc. All he ever did was what he thought was the best thing? And he left his wife and newborn behind, so sad.
    5) Arkady told Olegs dad that they would be coming for them? Did they? Are they ok?
    6) how's martha? Last we saw her she was about to adopt a little girl
    7) what happened to gabriel? He quit unexpectedly, and after the attempted coup we found out why. He probably knew it was coming and got out. Will he find Phillip and Elizabeth in russia to help them from any fallout.
    8) speaking of finding Phillip, did philips son ever find him and finally meet him?
    9) what about henry? Does stan actually take care and look after him? And did his school get paid for
    10) did poor stavos find a new job lol

      My theories:
      1. Paige has no handler, no KGB network behind her, no money and basically no identity at all. The only thing she can do is turn herself in and insist she only did some surveillance work and knew nothing about the rest.
      2. I think she went back, she wouldn't go after P&E because her faction lost and she has to either try and convince everyone she knew nothing about it or she goes to jail. Or worse.
      3. I don't think so.
      4. Probably yes, when USSR falls, or maybe even earlier in some prisoner exchange.
      5. IIRC, it was when they feared the coup faction would win. It didn't happen, so I assume Oleg's family is OK.
      6. She will have a very sad life in crumbling country, and things will not get better for her. I don't think she will ever be allowed back in USA.
      7. He got back to USSR and probably retired.
      8. Probably.
      9. His life would be a living hell once the press gets the story. The best thing for him is to just assume another identity and move as far away from Washington as possible.
      10. He's a pro, so yes :)

      @Coyotebones But she might be an Israeli spy like some have mentioned. At this time the Israelis (and probably today as well) did a lot of intelligence gathering of countries they considered their allies. They also went behind the back of the Americans and managed to secretly build a research facility under a nuclear power plant to build Israeli nuclear weapons. If you have ever watched Spielberg's "Munich" you'll learn that the Mossad did a lot of things behind the backs of many countries and often went through great lengths to keep it covered up.
      Anyways, this is hardly unique for the Israelis. The Americans actually spied on embassies and politicians of western countries which were their allies. The reason? They wanted to know where those countries sat in regards to many political questions which affected a lot of countries.
      That's one part The Americans never really brings up. How there also is espionage between countries which are official allies and how some agencies also keep an eye on each other within a country. The only we learn is that Philip and Elizabeth were secretly monitored themselves after they were suspected to be traitors and thus were "interrogated" to see if they would talk. Philip also wonder whether Elizabeth had talked to somebody regarding his "lack of faith" and was paranoid she might dispose of him somehow for a while.

      @stacetheface47 6 років тому +10

      @@alexanderplatypus3664 I wouldn't say Philip got weak or lazy. More disillusioned for what they were they truly were fighting for and by the final season even he was contemplating and slowly starting to go back to that life he retired from since he was failing at the travel agency plus his love and concern for Elizabeth's well being and Oleg's request to help Mikhail Gorbechov to get in power kinda forced him to come back. You got to remember Philip grew up very poor and was largely damn near starved to death as child, so much of the comfort of the American life left a impact on Philip and he come to realize that maybe the American way wasn't so bad. Elizabeth felt like she understood the big picture but became delusional, erratic, violent and in denial that their was some grand cause they were fighting for, but truthfully was a country slowing collapsing under it's own ineptitude, pride and corruption. People tend to forget she also enjoyed the comfort as much as Philip (do people forget the season 5 finale montage were she is torn about leaving).

They were very well written characters but they deserved everything they got. The only way I'd want them to be a family and happy is for Henrys sake but tbh they didn't show him any mind so he was better off with Stan in the end anyway.

    How are the Jennings children supposed to live alone in the US? Who is Henry going to live with and who will pay for his school and college (he's only 16)? It is implied that Stan will take him in, but, even if Henry claims he is completely innocent and didn't know anything about his parents' real "job", there will be a cloud of suspicion over him as the FBI might think he is a sleeper agent left in the US or a target for possible future KGB recruitment. In the best case scenario, that suspicion will haunt him for his entire adult life
    Paige's situation is even more complicated. Even if Stan doesn't tell anyone about his garage chat with the Jennings, she can no longer claim she didn't know anything as, in the best case scenario, she ran away with her parents when they were leaving for Russia. She can no longer infiltrate the FBI, or the State Department, or the CIA, or any government agency for that matter as she is now the daughter of the two known KGB officers who were operating illegally in the US and will never pass a background check. To make things worse, she herself was a KGB agent who took part in active operations with Elizabeth and her team. The FBI may not know about that yet, but if they arrest her, which they will if they find her, they will learn about it eventually and she will face prosecution on charges of espionage and aiding/concealing foreign spies (i.e. collusion with espionage) and will inevitably do jail time. Her life is basically ruined and, most likely, she must be on the run following the finale (in her last scene, wasn't she seen at Claudia's former hideout?). Maybe she will try to reconnect with the Center, but she is a liability to the KGB now too as her cover was blown and she cannot safely use another fake identity. In fact, if you think about it, even her and Henry's current identities are fake as the people listed as their parents in their birth certificates are actually dead. It is a mess and shows how crazy that KGB illegals program was, especially for the innocent kids.
    Philip and Elizabeth on the other hand will never be able to come back to America as they face espionage and multiple homicide charges in the US and would be immediately arrested if caught on US soil . The CIA might even go after them in Russia itself given their multiple killings and the amount of damage they caused to US national security over the years.
