I will still say 3 yrs later that coming back and watching the garage scene and this is probably the most epic series finale in the history of TV. I really don't think anything can ever top this or come close to it. it still just punches you in the stomach. Why are all the good shows gone? WTF happened?
I deeply love The Americans and it's finale -- it brings me to tears still and I haven't enjoyed a series more. And I've watched lots of the other usual suspects and loved their finales: Sopranos, Breaking Bad, The Wire, etc... But--and it's been a while--I can't say that the finale of Six Feet Under has ever been exceeded. Appreciation of a finale requires watching the series, of course--and all the better if done so in small doses, when broadcast, as you'll live that much more life during the course of watching and will be that much more emotionally loaded for the finale. But if you want to binge a really emotionally intelligent, ground-breaking show that is criminally overlooked these days, check out Six Feet Under. The finale will stun you as deeply as this one, for some similar and some very different reasons (all im(very)ho, of course)
I dont think he cared about it anymore at that point. He started to realize the importance of people in his life.. And he needed her at that point more than ever. Her as a human being.

I watched all 5 seasons with my wife. Three months before season 6 premiere she cheated, marriage ended. I couldn’t watch anything for more than a year. I watched season 6 about week ago and I felt bad that I couldn’t share this experience with her. Great ending of great series.

One of the best series endings ever. No guns. No car chases. No deaths. Pure character development and genuine emotion - with a spectacular selection of musical themes. You care about the husband and wife, about the two kids left behind...even about Martha in Russia with her adopted daughter. From the garage scene till the end, the telling of the conclusion is flawless. As is, of me, the entire series.
I never considered myself a big u2 fan, and have known this song forever But holy shit when this started while watching the finale it hit me so hard Absolutely perfect song choice
I just finished The Americans. It was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I’m not often emotional when it comes to TV shows, but this time I kinda was. My initial hope was that the end of the show would coincide with the end of the USSR and that Paige and Henry could go on with their lives and Philip could be what he always wanted: a normal American. But this was a good finale too...
Well, I am not sure if the end of the USSR would have enabled a soviet spy to just quit and live a "normal" life, after all Philip was livings as an illegal spy in the United States for decades and he commited multiple crimes including espionage, homicide, burglary and countless other. Maybe he could have defected more easily after the collapse of the USSR but do not forget that the KGP was succeeded by the SWR and FSB and I doubt that the SWR would forget one of their most valuable assets in the USA.
Best finale of an serie. Very very underrated. I love 'Sopranos', 'Mad Men', 'The Wire' but this end is perfect, emotional and poetic. Also loaded with symbolism. Matt's look at the McDonald's at the american -northamerican- family as he prepares to escape to the USSR is powerful. McDonald represents the symbol of EEUU consumerism and in part of the USA itself and its culture, Matt has already gotten used to EEUU life and likes it, but his heart is broken by greater causes he has to flee to the USSR.
There's so much that can be discussed about this closing. It's packed so tight, with so much needed information, and with such dramatic shots. Still, it's not overwhelming in the least. Quite the opposite. It's as smooth as a McDonald's (perfect product placement) milkshake. First, the way Stan finds out on his own completely validates his own character arc as a badass agent. When I originally watched the series, I was disappointed that he didn't kill Philip and Elizabeth. For all the heinous crimes they committed, I truly believed their arcs needed to have a bloody end. However, the way the filmmakers treated this is perfect. Soldiers who'd finished a job and simply wanted to go home, and Stan, a friend turned sudden nemesis honoring that request. Second, Philip's absolute sadness and honor to sacrifice the relationship with his son and leave a life he'd built for the sake of the unit is the epitome of honor. This is caught perfectly as he stares out the window of the McDonald's. He weeps on the inside. Third, Elizabeth's usual intellectual and logical approach to her job is suspended in her emotional desire to pick up Henry on their way out of the country. That was handled in a fast, yet powerful moment in the warehouse. Fourth, Paige. What can I say? Her standing on the train platform is the single most powerful sign of growth in such a short time span that I've ever seen on film. She went from flight on command to the self-realization that she is not her parents, and has a life to fulfill on her own. Beautifully done. I also have to say that this being shot on a train platform revitalized a once cliché moment in storytelling. Fifth, the Jennings' standing on the bridge overlooking Moscow was a surreal transformation from American back to Russian, built on a foundation of love for each other and for a movement larger than themselves. I could go on and on and on.
Bruh, Stan got PLAYED. Actually, it was worse, because he was so desperate for his relationship to the Jennings to mean something that he was willing to accept the obvious lie that they didn’t kill people. And they totally ruined his marriage. I like the Jennings as entertaining characters, but they’re absolutely fucking monsters.
I love how subtle and provicative they are in this serie, for example how they suggest with a small zoom on a thoughtful Renee, and a focus on the FBI moving boxes, that Renee might be more then what meets the eye. She always seemed too perfect for Stan, the right girl in the right moment.
Masterpiece ending. Up there with Six Feet Under finale with Sia Breath Me as soundtrack. It was so mind blowing and gut wrenching, I kept dreaming it in my sleep. I needed to see it again and here I am again, palm sweating and crying all over again. Thank you The Americans for playing against the expectations and giving this superb finale.
Bro, Six Feet Under was the most random and pointless series ending I've ever seen. Not even close to touching this beautifully orchestrated masterpiece

In the age of Peak TV, The Americans is a show that was extensively overlooked. This comes as a plus. In a market where producers and media worry more in high ratings rather than quality, the americans was true to its nature, something that a few shows do nowdays. Beyond the awards and the recognition on high streaming media, the show stands out for its mature content and astounding development, not to mention the production quality. It appeals to the senses, to this old fashioned idea that wonders come from unexpected places. The Americans is to me a turning point on the way I conceive modern TV. In one point, this felt more than sheer entertainment. The only word I can think about is Storytelling. A term that sums up the craft of connecting beyond words, imagery, sounds... to appeal to the senses. To convey emotions.
Damn it I want more! So many unanswered question's! 1) What happens to paige? I see 3 options. She either turns herself in, assumes a new identity and attempts a normal life, or becomes a 2nd gen spy like the center wanted all along. She did go back to the safehouse and claudia was already gone. 2) Speaking of Claudia did she really go back to russia? She lied so much I never believed anything her character said. Remember Paige has no idea what her mom did to Tatiana.. but if for some reason Claudia did go back to russia, will she go after Phillip and Elizabeth? 3) What about Stans wife? Is she a damn spy or not? I think she is, but that's just my personal opinion. 4) what about oleg? Will he ever get out of prison? I felt horrible for his character arc. All he ever did was what he thought was the best thing? And he left his wife and newborn behind, so sad. 5) Arkady told Olegs dad that they would be coming for them? Did they? Are they ok? 6) how's martha? Last we saw her she was about to adopt a little girl 7) what happened to gabriel? He quit unexpectedly, and after the attempted coup we found out why. He probably knew it was coming and got out. Will he find Phillip and Elizabeth in russia to help them from any fallout. 8) speaking of finding Phillip, did philips son ever find him and finally meet him? 9) what about henry? Does stan actually take care and look after him? And did his school get paid for 10) did poor stavos find a new job lol
My theories: 1. Paige has no handler, no KGB network behind her, no money and basically no identity at all. The only thing she can do is turn herself in and insist she only did some surveillance work and knew nothing about the rest. 2. I think she went back, she wouldn't go after P&E because her faction lost and she has to either try and convince everyone she knew nothing about it or she goes to jail. Or worse. 3. I don't think so. 4. Probably yes, when USSR falls, or maybe even earlier in some prisoner exchange. 5. IIRC, it was when they feared the coup faction would win. It didn't happen, so I assume Oleg's family is OK. 6. She will have a very sad life in crumbling country, and things will not get better for her. I don't think she will ever be allowed back in USA. 7. He got back to USSR and probably retired. 8. Probably. 9. His life would be a living hell once the press gets the story. The best thing for him is to just assume another identity and move as far away from Washington as possible. 10. He's a pro, so yes :)
Just watched the Truman Show for the first times in ages. I hadn’t realized that Noah Emmerich plays Truman’s “best friend.” Shoe is on the other foot.
I remembered the day after this episode premiered I had jury duty. On our break i walked to this little hipster marketplace in Downtown LA I glanced at this tall dude. I stopped and thought was it Noah Emmerich so I went backed and walked over the place to see if it was him or not. Sadly couldnt find him.
I just discovered this fascinating piece of art. I went through all the seasons at warp 9 (trekies, you understand) and the finale, wow. Not good, not evil... Just human beings, lights and shadows. Greetings from 🇨🇱 (not Texas)
@Coyotebones But she might be an Israeli spy like some have mentioned. At this time the Israelis (and probably today as well) did a lot of intelligence gathering of countries they considered their allies. They also went behind the back of the Americans and managed to secretly build a research facility under a nuclear power plant to build Israeli nuclear weapons. If you have ever watched Spielberg's "Munich" you'll learn that the Mossad did a lot of things behind the backs of many countries and often went through great lengths to keep it covered up. Anyways, this is hardly unique for the Israelis. The Americans actually spied on embassies and politicians of western countries which were their allies. The reason? They wanted to know where those countries sat in regards to many political questions which affected a lot of countries. That's one part The Americans never really brings up. How there also is espionage between countries which are official allies and how some agencies also keep an eye on each other within a country. The only we learn is that Philip and Elizabeth were secretly monitored themselves after they were suspected to be traitors and thus were "interrogated" to see if they would talk. Philip also wonder whether Elizabeth had talked to somebody regarding his "lack of faith" and was paranoid she might dispose of him somehow for a while.

The more I think about this series I wonder if Elizabeth really preferred Russia over the United States. She was warped in to this life as a teenager and didn’t even know what she was fighting for at the end. Phillip understood everything. I wish it would have ended that they both stopped and loved and lived like Americans.
@@alexanderplatypus3664 I wouldn't say Philip got weak or lazy. More disillusioned for what they were they truly were fighting for and by the final season even he was contemplating and slowly starting to go back to that life he retired from since he was failing at the travel agency plus his love and concern for Elizabeth's well being and Oleg's request to help Mikhail Gorbechov to get in power kinda forced him to come back. You got to remember Philip grew up very poor and was largely damn near starved to death as child, so much of the comfort of the American life left a impact on Philip and he come to realize that maybe the American way wasn't so bad. Elizabeth felt like she understood the big picture but became delusional, erratic, violent and in denial that their was some grand cause they were fighting for, but truthfully was a country slowing collapsing under it's own ineptitude, pride and corruption. People tend to forget she also enjoyed the comfort as much as Philip (do people forget the season 5 finale montage were she is torn about leaving).
They didn't deserve it though. They had to be punished for all the murders and shit they'd done over the years. And to have it be that the loss of their children was the price they had to pay was an absolutely incredible decision by the writers.
Tom Jones True. But don't you want like an alternate ending or something where they can be happy as Americans? I don't know man. These characters were too real for me lol. I want them to be happy
@@Melvin7727 I mean, no lol! You could argue Phillip deserved to be happy as he was unhappy doing what he had to all the way through, he had a concience and yet still executed innocents regardless, Elizabeth was a hardline crazy until like the last few episodes so IDK. They were very well written characters but they deserved everything they got. The only way I'd want them to be a family and happy is for Henrys sake but tbh they didn't show him any mind so he was better off with Stan in the end anyway. Phillip and Elizabeth had each other at the end and that's both more than they deserved and kind of exactly what they deserved as well. I just love the "Maybe we would have met on a bus" line. Just perfect for them and their love.
In the late 1980's I worked in the government systems industry that provided technical support to the CIA, NSA and other military intelligence services. I sat in on a counter-espionage briefing for my company by one of the top FBI counter-spies for the US. Stan bears a spooky resemblance to the man. Someone did some homework This show was almost as much about Stan as it was the Jennings. Well done.
How are the Jennings children supposed to live alone in the US? Who is Henry going to live with and who will pay for his school and college (he's only 16)? It is implied that Stan will take him in, but, even if Henry claims he is completely innocent and didn't know anything about his parents' real "job", there will be a cloud of suspicion over him as the FBI might think he is a sleeper agent left in the US or a target for possible future KGB recruitment. In the best case scenario, that suspicion will haunt him for his entire adult life Paige's situation is even more complicated. Even if Stan doesn't tell anyone about his garage chat with the Jennings, she can no longer claim she didn't know anything as, in the best case scenario, she ran away with her parents when they were leaving for Russia. She can no longer infiltrate the FBI, or the State Department, or the CIA, or any government agency for that matter as she is now the daughter of the two known KGB officers who were operating illegally in the US and will never pass a background check. To make things worse, she herself was a KGB agent who took part in active operations with Elizabeth and her team. The FBI may not know about that yet, but if they arrest her, which they will if they find her, they will learn about it eventually and she will face prosecution on charges of espionage and aiding/concealing foreign spies (i.e. collusion with espionage) and will inevitably do jail time. Her life is basically ruined and, most likely, she must be on the run following the finale (in her last scene, wasn't she seen at Claudia's former hideout?). Maybe she will try to reconnect with the Center, but she is a liability to the KGB now too as her cover was blown and she cannot safely use another fake identity. In fact, if you think about it, even her and Henry's current identities are fake as the people listed as their parents in their birth certificates are actually dead. It is a mess and shows how crazy that KGB illegals program was, especially for the innocent kids. Philip and Elizabeth on the other hand will never be able to come back to America as they face espionage and multiple homicide charges in the US and would be immediately arrested if caught on US soil . The CIA might even go after them in Russia itself given their multiple killings and the amount of damage they caused to US national security over the years.

Since I made this last comment though I may have found my favorite TV show ending ever, the final scene in Mr. In-between is amazing.
The Americans is astonishing from start to finish. Culminating in THE most powerful, stunning ending, with a brilliant choice of soundtrack.

This really was one of the all time best endings to a series. Still gets me
Yeah you got that
Very powerful finale. I had this song playing in my head the rest of the day after watching it.
I feel bad for Stan. Now he has to wonder if his new wife isn't also a KGB sleeper agent.
Stan will never trust another human for the rest of his life!
Why? He also a liar, remember about what he did to sandra?
I dont think he cared about it anymore at that point. He started to realize the importance of people in his life.. And he needed her at that point more than ever. Her as a human being.
If you notice, they very explicitly show her watching the FBI clear out the Jenningses' house and have boxes of files loaded into a car. She watches that happen with two boxes in succession, no less. She then walks away not as if she's moved on, but more like she's thinking about it. It's worth noting that she will have access to those files and more if she does get her FBI administrative job.
@@rswothas1978 He did though, that's why he has that 'look' on his face as he watches her sleep; the thing is though by the finale it's like 1989, which is when the failed coup took place in the USSR, which largely led to its collapse, so if she is in fact KGB what in the hell is she gonna do in a few years when she doesn't have a handler or anybody to report back to and a country that really isn't hers anymore..?
I watched all 5 seasons with my wife. Three months before season 6 premiere she cheated, marriage ended. I couldn’t watch anything for more than a year. I watched season 6 about week ago and I felt bad that I couldn’t share this experience with her. Great ending of great series.
never feel bad for cheater bro...hope you got new wife who you can share another great TV series...good luck
Is that true?? Hopefully you find a new tv partner
Jan, find a lovely Russian girl. They are very compassion and reliable
That is miserable. Feel for you, man. Like the other commenter said, hope you find a new person to share new tv series with.
She definitely has some Russian blood / heritage to her somewhere then. Sorry, man.
It's March 2020 and it still keeps me up at night not knowing if Renee was one of them...
I think she was.
Stan's faces -- first a face of warmth when he tucks her in. Than he sits down and ponder what may or not be so. And he looks scared, lonely. He better win the Oscar for this.

I've found myself watching this again and again... No words needed. The song is just perfect for this sequence.
I never considered myself a big u2 fan, and have known this song forever
But holy shit when this started while watching the finale it hit me so hard
Absolutely perfect song choice

Its not. It represents the opposite of what they stand for: capitalism. Which makes a great contrast :)

Six feet under has by far the best finale of all time go check it out i love all those shows as well but six feet understand ending is the best
Brilliant insights. "I could go on and on." I know what you mean!
🙌
Brilliant remarks, my friend
Bruh, Stan got PLAYED. Actually, it was worse, because he was so desperate for his relationship to the Jennings to mean something that he was willing to accept the obvious lie that they didn’t kill people. And they totally ruined his marriage. I like the Jennings as entertaining characters, but they’re absolutely fucking monsters.
Its a pity that we dont get to hear the talk between Stan anda Henry. Really the only thing i did nota liked from this amazing episode
I love how subtle and provicative they are in this serie, for example how they suggest with a small zoom on a thoughtful Renee, and a focus on the FBI moving boxes, that Renee might be more then what meets the eye. She always seemed too perfect for Stan, the right girl in the right moment.
The face of Renee really makes me feel like she is also a spy, maybe not a Soviet one, but still.
Israelian's one. There is a very nice explanation about that on Reddit.

Agree on The Americans and Six Feet Under. I'd add the last episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. to the list, though.
Bro, Six Feet Under was the most random and pointless series ending I've ever seen. Not even close to touching this beautifully orchestrated masterpiece
@@asheisadora Buffy, really? I honestly thought Angel had a way better series finale, and I think Becoming, Graduation Day, Prophecy Girl and The Gift were all way better finales than Chosen was. Becoming and The Body are, along with Ozymandias(Breaking Bad), and this episode, Start, are the best episodes of Tv I've ever seen.
@@anatoldenevers237 Oh, I loved the episodes of Buffy you mentioned but as series finales go I thought the Buffy finale nailed it. Tied everything up beautifully. Though I liked Angel, to me it never ever compared to Buffy.
@@asheisadora I agree that Buffy was for the most part better than Angel, but I never liked it's finale(or season 7 in general) all that much, whereas the Angel finale absolutely KILLED(quite a lot of things, whole final episode was a massacre).

I just finished watching this brilliant series a week ago. Boy boy boy, where have I been?
I wish the scene had finished in this clip. The moment where Elizabeth sees Paige is so heartbreaking. That’s what I came back to see.
Missing The Americans. Great story and incredible characters.
The McDonald’s was a great touch. There’s nothing more American than that.
Last we saw her she was about to adopt a little girl
7) what happened to gabriel? He quit unexpectedly, and after the attempted coup we found out why. He probably knew it was coming and got out. Will he find Phillip and Elizabeth in russia to help them from any fallout.
8) speaking of finding Phillip, did philips son ever find him and finally meet him?
9) what about henry? Does stan actually take care and look after him? And did his school get paid for
10) did poor stavos find a new job lol
My theories:
I’d say Elizabeth and Philip were fucking sociopaths.
@@mistergrieves not really IMO but close. In their favor, they weren't born that way.
Renee is a spy. She was too perfect and wanted to get into the FBI so bad.
The final episode was the highest ranked in the series. Says it all. Superb TV show that never got the recognition it deserved.

SIX SEASONS AND A MOVIE
The more I think about this series I wonder if Elizabeth really preferred Russia over the United States. She was warped in to this life as a teenager and didn’t even know what she was fighting for at the end. Phillip understood everything. I wish it would have ended that they both stopped and loved and lived like Americans.
I think it was the opposite, Phillip got lazy and weak and addicted to comforts while Elizabeth kept understanding the big picture
Tom Jones
True.
I didn't know it was the last season... And it still had the feels. I found it later why... :(
In the late 1980's I worked in the government systems industry that provided technical support to the CIA, NSA and other military intelligence services. I sat in on a counter-espionage briefing for my company by one of the top FBI counter-spies for the US. Stan bears a spooky resemblance to the man. Someone did some homework This show was almost as much about Stan as it was the Jennings. Well done.

24, Justified, and The Americans will always be my favorites.
Just finished the show. I cried like a baby
In the best case scenario, that suspicion will haunt him for his entire adult life
Paige's situation is even more complicated.
Stan is a good person, a good friend.
Yeah, he was a really good guy. Only bad thing about him was killing that innocent russian guy in the first season.
I wish Stan was my friend. But I'd probably betray him too (who could resist?)
Phil was also a really good friend. Not such a good person though lol
