I read in an interview that Lou was briefly pushed into singing standards by his manager after the success of Lightning Strikes. Sounds great and pretty cool that it was captured on film. Lou is one of the greatest rock/pop vocalists of all time!
Lou Christie was never a singer of bubble gum music...........the "bubble gum" era was the late 60's with artists such as The Archies, Bobby Sherman, and Tommy Roe..................not Lou Christie! Get your musical eras STRAIGHT!!!!!!!!!
@@jaredcraver3898 Lou Christie was never considered among the "bubble gum" artists. Lots of songs were released in 1969...........they were not all considered as belonging to the "bubble gum" genre.
He's pattering his singing after the singers from the previous generation, a wise choice on his part. He was well-aware that the voice in LIGHTNING STRIKES can not be the same as in this number where he doesn't dip up into falsetto range of which he is famed. Nice presentation with a more internalized, gentle, and otherworldly quality which proves his versatility.
Totally agree! He has so many great songs yet I never hear mention of him these days... I especially love lightning strikes, 2 faces have I, make summer last forever, I'm gonna make you mine, beyond the blue horizon, and the gypsy cried
He takes the 'softly' literally. This is a very sensitive rendition and he seems to be really into it. His sad demeanor such as the lowering and closing eyes movements do show quite a contrast as Mike Douglas says as this song is the opposite of Lightning Strikes, Rhapsody In The Rain, etc.
Great voice for ballads. Yes, I agree, I think with a little more rehearsal this would have been a big hit for him, but if Sinatra had just recorded it I'm sure there would be no way.
How old was he there? Extremely boyish looking and involved within the song though I note stage fright and shyness. To think in a few short years that he was more at ease.
Incredibly talented Lou Christie. Omg, how beautiful you sound. Love this.
My favorite person and voice since I first heard him.
I never heard this song before. What a gem! Never would have heard it if it wasn’t for UA-cam. Thank you for posting this beautiful song.
A very pure voice. And his interpretation of the lyric is gorgeous. Big fan!
He should have released it, it would have been a hit!

Well done. I love to hear Lou sing in this range. Such a richness to his voice.
Absolutely beautiful, don't remember hearing this one.
A rabbit hole led me here and glad it did. Lou was a tremendous talent. What a gem!
First time seeing this . Love it !! 🥰❤️❤️
Thanks for posting this gem. He sings this so beautifully. He and his voice has aged very well. This nice Italian boy still has it.
Italian & Polish.
Very Versatile gent.
And some kielbasa to go with his Lasagna.
Wow what a great performance by lou
Beautiful rendition,!!
WOW, what a great voice!!
A reminder that outside the pop bubble-gum hits, he is an incredibly talented singer.

@@kurtsupreme and let's not forget the 1910 Fruitgum Company :)
@@kurtsupreme actually wait a minute... I'm gonna make you mine could probably be considered bubble gum pop, cause that one was from '69

Thats when we could hear every word they sang beautiful
Very impressive, demonstrating his versatility!
Beautiful Lou...
He's sensational!
He sings so well. I'm glad you posted this gem. Lovely Lou x
There's a certain sweetness to him which he put to good use in this song.
a 5 octave voice I always felt very underrated by the industry...
Move over Frank. Lou nailed it.
Beautiful song with a heartbreaking back story of the song's meaning.
Hatte Lou Christie jemals Gesangsunterricht ? Er kann seine Stimme grossartig modulieren. Bravo
beautiful
Mr. Christie’s career should have been much much bigger than it was. A great singer he is.
He has had a wonderful career and made quite a bit of money with the range of his voice in popular music.
Totally agree! He has so many great songs yet I never hear mention of him these days... I especially love lightning strikes, 2 faces have I, make summer last forever, I'm gonna make you mine, beyond the blue horizon, and the gypsy cried
Bravo, Lou, Bravo.
The best.. Lou..you r the man.. brilliant composer, singer
So young here!
So impressive!
This was at the end of Mike Douglas show and they had to kill some time so he gave the piano player a key to playing and they improvise this
Those were the days when talent were asked to work with the EV 635 mic !
Here in England Softly (As I Leave You) was a hit for Matt Monro. Lou does a commendable version here.
You should hear Lou sing "O Holy Night"

I also noticed he seems rather shy here, nerves perhaps, as later appearances show a more hearty and extroverted and dynamic personality.
He was very underestimated He is a great singer we will put them right in the line with Frank Sinatra
Wow, ah.... better than Frank...
At least he doesn't blast away and can sing soft in addition to loud.
Beautiful.
Is he wearing a hair piece?
No
No never
He was in his mid-20s and never has worn a hairpiece
I love his facebook page too. Hates Trump, says so.
That's too bad
He's not the true professional then that I thought he was. Just another ass.
Why is that....
@@petesacco3255 - Lou has always been and still is an AMAZING singer!!
That is because he knows Trump and people like him

How young he looks. He seems rather nervous here. His voice is not fully developed as it was to become.
I love Doris Day's version.
There's no falsetto to be found here.
