Thanks for showing the reality of hunting, it’s not always rainbows and butterflies out there and we are not in control of what happens once we cut that arrow or even a bullet lose. Tracking skills and being able to finish the job is a skill nobody really talks about. You guys did a great job, congrats on a killer CO bull.
Man - you guys just know how to do it. Appreciate the full reality of the hunt - nothing is guaranteed. And elk are the toughest dang critters! Nice job!
Amazing hunt. Congratulations gentlemen. The oldest bull I have killed (10 years old) was also missing an ivory. I asked my buddy who is a biologist for the state about it and he told me that it does happen, although not very often. Most of the time it’s from fighting other bulls. Great job on this hunt. You guys are incredible hunters and I appreciate what you bring to the table. Your videos are perfect in my opinion. No BS. No music. No fluff. Just hard work and awesome kills. Thanks for sharing.
I’ve heard some horror stories about the Sevr. I have a bunch of them but can’t bring myself to carry them. This solidifies my decision. I will carry a couple mechanical heads for follow up shots at long range but have settled on the Evolution Outdoors Jekyll as the head that will be on my arrow for first shot. Good job staying on him and getting it done. I’m sure that was an emotional roller coaster.
What a stud bull! I was thinking about running expandable’s this year, but after this video I will definitely stick to using fixed. Good thing you guys found him it would suck to loose a bull after a perfect first shot like that. What a hunt though congrats!
Fixed blades need a good point as well. Stay away from stuff that is similar to tooth of the arrow shape. Had some very poor penetration with brand new tooth of the arrow on what was a very good 40yd broadside shot. Switched to Valkyrie.
Ive had to track aniamls and finished them off, even after what i thought was a good shot. It was 5 hours too. But we did get the animals. Thanks for keeping it real.
Good discussion about expandable broadheads and elk. I have chosen to stick with mechanical broadheads. 7 pass through bulls and one pass through on a cow. Furthest track job was 350 yards. They do make one big hole though but two holes seems to be better for me.
Great hunt. How I envy you hunting grounds (in a positive sense). I hunt in Europe, specifically in Poland. Our hunting grounds compared to yours are like hunting in a park. Greetings with the Polish hunting greeting Darz Bór! (Bór is a coniferous forest in Polish. Gift means the gifts of the forest. In short, may the forest give you abundant gifts)
great hunt guys congrats on the bull. did y'all look at the first broadhead to see if was damaged in any way. also I think this could be a good example on why you shouldn't use mechanical broadheads on something as big as a elk but use a fixed blade double bevel or single bevel
I totally agree! Two blade Broadhead is a much better option. The chance of deflection is minimal. Less resistance going through animal. Congratulation and thank you for your honesty in regards to deflection.Great hunt.
I have had a couple friends use mechanical broadheads on elk and all were horror stories. Not a good idea. Unless you get just straight lucky and cut an artery. Thta shot was the exact same senario my buddy had with me and same deal. One lung and big blade rib deflection which cause the arrow to go gut on a broadside shot. Had to give him time sneak in and finish him off 4 hours later. Great job doing the right thing and waiting!!!!
Love all of your videos, learned a lot of different techniques, but I was wondering if you could do a gear breakdown for your trips. I have never been on a larger game hunt and would really like to know what I would need when I get to go. Doesn’t need to be every video but maybe one video covering the basics and pro tips???
Great video. Been in your position before but didn’t have the same ending. Losing an animal is one of the absolute worst feelings as a hunter. Glad you could close the deal. I get the feeling you aren’t wanting to say the name of the expandable you were using but if you wouldn’t mind sharing it would be nice to know. I, like you, decided to try an expandable for this upcoming season. Shot a bull 2 years ago with muzzy. Clean pass through, double lung but the blood trail was minimal to nothing. When we got to the bull both lung cavities were literally full of blood but just didn’t bleed out well. So I did a lot of looking and was going to try the SEVR 1.75” this Fall. It’s a tricky balance to try and have good penetration but also have good enough blood trails to find the animal. Thanks! I loved the video!
This is exactly why Expandable and Mechanical Broadheads are NOT recommended for Elk. Its physics - blades expanding during penetration 1. adds drag, 2. Elk hide is far tougher, heavier, thicker than the Whitetail hides that almost every expandable brand is marketing for AND during rut or most of the time in early season they will have very dirty hides and often layers of thick dried mud, 3. they perform even worse on angled shots because the opening blades will push the shaft into a different penetration path than what was aimed for and that can cause more trouble and a bad placement. I even once saw a mechanical literally bounce off the shoulder of a bull without any penetration because the reverse mechanical energy opening (there are more contributing circumstances, but the arrow DID bounce off him at 60yds, semi Qtring away, in a 40mph head wind, with a 70lbs draw weight compound bow, and by bounce, I mean it went 30 feet in the air!) I am a Guide in CO & NM with 128 successful Elk hunts, and I can tell you that if we ever have trouble recovering an Archery Bull that 90% of the time it will be due to a hunter ignoring the recommendations and coming to hunt with a Mechanical Broadhead. Elk are just tougher, thicker hided, and especially during rut when they might even be layered in mud, they are harder to kill with a bow than many realize, especially the excited hunter who doesn't have alot of Elk success under their belt. You guys have awesome success, extremely good numbers, and great Elk experience. I super enjoy your footage and story lines as a family of hunters.... keep up the good work! Congratulations on getting this one down.
Thank you. We have ran fixed blades our whole life and thought we would try a mechanical that our good friends recommended us. Needless to say, we are going back to fixed blade. Learned our lesson for sure
@@lycheeznuts the point is that with mechanicals it often is NOT a Dead Elk. SNR was skilled enough to have great placement and it was close enough on initial shot to at least get lethal penetration. What we see with mechanicals is often the longer shots see twice that amount of drag and half that amount of penetration... And again if the shot is any kind of angle the physics of rearward opening blades also have potential of moving the angle of entry and worsening the placement. And mechanical broadheads shouldn't be set loose on an Elk beyond 40yds either. This is a happy ending BUT with a very good example of why mechanical broad heads suck and are NOT recommended for Elk hunts..... If we are going to have a missed recovery on an Elk 90% of the time it's due to a mechanical broad head shooter... It's not worth it. As you also see in SNRs response they are definitely going back to fixed blade broad heads. That's the right and responsible answer for Elk hunters. They do a great job filming and this isnt a bust at all on them, they did a good job recovering it and learned the obvious lesson. That lesson is worth repeating for others to learn and not lose an Elk.... I hate seeing wounded Elk get away.
I've shot 7 bulls with a mechanical broadhead and they have worked flawlessly... not saying your wrong but I just wanted to state the other side of the fact>>>>
Thats the reality of hunting. I'm not trying to be a gear snob here hunt how you like great video content, but try out a single bevel fixed head. I had a mechanical sorta deflect off a rib with similar results. What looked like a 12 ring shot ended up being back of lungs/low liver. Switched to a Grizzlystik Maasai fixed head and have had incredible results since.
Well done as usual! One thing though, I just can’t get behind the use of expandable broadheads for exactly the reason you proved on this bull. Minimal penetration and deflection. Hard to argue against physics :). You guys are studs tho! Well done.
Congrats on a great bull! And good job tracking and getting him finished. Did the first arrow break in half on impact? It definitely looked like a perfect shot placement for a 15-20 second kill. What did you find? The video didn't really get detailed on it, and I'm really curious. Did the 3rd shot miss completely? And what broadhead did you use?

That first shot arrow performance is concerning. I guess it could have been quartered towards more than you thought, but otherwise that is some sort of deflection for sure.
That’s the very reason for not using mechanical broad heads. They don’t always work the way they should. He felt bad about the suffering and was able to get two more arrows in him. Nice bull though.
My family and I have completely stopped hunting in New Mexico and Colorado because of the stupid treasonous laws they continue to pass! We've been keeping all of our money in our home state of Texas and we can still hunt just about everything we can afford to hunt! If you are unsure and don’t hear a crash, waiting is the ethical thing to do. Going in fast would bump him leading to a longer track and if he isn’t bleeding well, possibly losing him and letting the meat spoil. Always easy to be a critic online. If only we could all be you.
