    This music would most definitely raise someone from a dead state into eternal glory, and if my body was lying there in state, I would probably rise up and congratulate the organist.

    Used to love that hymn about the saints of God, particularly the line "and some were eaten by a fierce wild beast, and there's not any reason, no not one, why I shouldn't be one too." Always fancied being a fierce wild beast.

    I've spent my whole life growing up listening to the sound of the organ of Gloucester Cathedral from a wide range of organists over the decades such as David Briggs, Andrew Nethsinga, Robert Houssart, Mark Lee, Ashley Grote, and more recently to the present day with Adrian Partington and Jonathan Hope, whom I've had the pleasure to know personally and professionally. I myself had such a unique thrill being able to play on it myself in recent times, even with having lessons with Adrian only just last Friday to name such an occurrence. I could tell from Richard's expression just how much it felt for him to be there in person over a week ago to be up close and personal with such an iconic instrument in our country. This really was an icing on the cake to have both Jonathan and Richard working together again as well as the BIS community to have the this organ added to Richard's collection. I can think of a few extra churches here in our county I think you'll love to play and add to your digital organ library if you're interested Richard!

      There are lots of places I’d love to go, and I’m trying to record at least one pipe per month. There are lots of beautiful churches around with good organs 😊

      @@beautyinsound There's St. Catharine's which is just up the road from me in Gloucester, as well as St. Barnabas on Stroud Road which has a fantastic acoustic. If you get the chance, definitely make a visit to Tewkesbury Abbey.

    For those interested, the organ builders Nicholsons have removed all the pipework from this instrument and the pipes have been melted down. The exception are the case pipes which date from the 17th century. So the Gloucester Cathedral organ shown here no longer exists. As such this performance is a useful historical record of the instrument before its destruction. The brand new organ is due to be completed in 2026.

    Excellent. Thank you very much indeed. And for once, at last, the chat regulars seemed to be paying attention to what you were doing, Such a relief from their usual way of infantilizing themselves with their toe-curlingly embarrassing talk of "throwing cake around in the naughty corner", etc. Week by week it makes me sad to see adults behaving like this. I hope they can snap out of it and focus on the music, the instruments, the playing, and the hymns. Thank you again.

    I remember "processing" to this at Canterbury Cathedral on one of my first visits there. We walked from the quire seating to the site of the martyrdom of St Thomas. I'd never "processed" before. When I hear this played on a cathedral organ it reminds me of that occasion.

    Richard: You are a fantastic organist! And you are the first world-class organist I have ever noted who is able to play in your socked feet sans organ shoes. Your feet must be highly developed to withstand the strain and pressure of the pedals without the buffer of the shoe.

    • @beautyinsound
      @beautyinsound  2 роки тому +2

      You're very kind! I'm not sure about 'world-class'.... more like 'world-infamous'! I'm happy to be able to play in both shoes and socks, and I do honestly believe that it improves one's ability to naturally feel their way around the pedalboard.

    Coming in late again - sorry! But, where to start with such a fine selection of hymns on such a stunning instrument?
    OK, Thornbury - it is one of those tunes which used to addle my brain in D & I always played it in C. (E#s just don't compute here.) Anyway, our chamber choir was singing at Canterbury Cathedral & our D.o.M. asked if I would play. Cue many hours of practice & it is now under the fingers for ever. Really strange experience though as the choir & congregation processed up to the extreme east end during the hymn & seemed to be further behind on each verse - getting to the final bars, stopping & hearing them two whole beats later was fun! I had to follow some advice I heard years ago & "ignore the congregation or you will never get home for lunch!" Thanks again Richard & Caroline (and Hugo, of course).

Hearing you play makes me yearn for the day of the Lords return and the great song and praise we shall all sing together before the Father under the Chief Cantor, Jesus Christ inspired by the Spirit himself. . . until that point, however, the question of editions will remain unresolved 😄. Which edition did you use for the Bach Prelude and Fugue in C? I am unsatisfied with mine...

I attend the Chichester cathedral concerts and I had the privilege of once playing the pipe organ there. (My very first time ever playing a pipe organ. Different from my Johannus organ). I noticed a delay in sound as you pressed the keys, so that's different. Looking forward to some more organ music from you. Thank You.

    Okay I am confused, over here they have been telling us lately that the tune to the Star Spangled Banner was actually an old English drinking tune called "Ode to Anacreon" or something like that. Is it actually a hymn tune before that and they just got it wrong? Or was it a case of the folk tune being adapted into a hymn and then into our song?
